Combine the best of city living with the relaxed atmosphere of the countryside at this cosy, gem-of-an-inn in Durham. Surrounded by the peaceful woodland of Flass Vale, it’s hard to believe The Kingslodge Inn is just a ten-minute stroll from the heart of historic Durham with its UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and adjoining Castle. Voted the best venue in County Durham in the National Pub & Bar Awards in 2019 and named by The Times as one of the '20 best places to stay in the UK with a dog’, The Kingslodge Inn has all the benefits of a city-centre location but with a laid-back, relaxed vibe.

The Kingslodge Inn, part of The Inn Collection Group, garners appreciation for its excellent service, with the staff frequently lauded as friendly and efficient, providing comfortable rooms and good food, despite occasional slow service. Its prime location is a hit among guests for being within easy reach of the city center and nature, complemented by hassle-free parking. The hotel's cleanliness earns high marks, though opinions on the rooms vary, with some finding them dated. Dog-friendly amenities and free parking are popular, yet some guests feel the value is compromised by small portions and high prices.

It is in walking distant to Durham centre with parking and amazing staff, the food was amazing and the breakfast are superb. It was waiter service for drinks and dinner and breakfast, the staff could not be more helpful. The rooms are all colour concordant and they do dog friendly and disabled there is no lifts but there is bedrooms on the floor level. We went when they were doing the August food offer and I had the steak pie which was one of the best iv had and my wife the sea bass which she said was fab. The breakfast was the best iv had.

We booked The Kingslodge Inn as we like to be within walking distance of the centre of the city we are visiting and free parking. This hotel delivered on both counts. Although it is only a 10 minute walk into Durham, the hotel's surroundings are leafy and green so you feel like you are staying in the country. Our room was quite small but had everything you could need - it was beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. During our stay the room was not serviced (due to Covid restrictions) but the very pleasant cleaning staff were around the corridors and always asked if we needed any supplies in the room (milks etc.). Breakfast was excellent and we chose to eat in the hotel on two of our three nights as we were impressed with the food and service. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a Durham city break.

Food, beer, wine and service all good. They have obviously spent a lot of money providing quality screening between tables and set up a 1 way system and hand sanitation for customers. Well worth a visit.

First time visiting Durham and Kings Lodge Inn appeared to rank highly. Can only be left a tad disappointed after a couple of nights stay and feel I've overpaid for what I experienced

I booked a double room but was given a twin room which was very small and dark. Even with lights on (all using different coloured lamps) it was gloomy.
The bathroom was small, the shower almost laughably so. It felt like I was stood in a dark phone box, and I'm not a big person!

Staff weren't friendly. I didn't have any real issues, but they appeared to be uninterested and bored of being there. It also looked as if there was no manager on duty, instead just temp workers running the gig.

Breakfast was very disappointing. Both mornings we asked for eggs well done, both mornings resulted in the same runny eggs. Admittedly, they said they were short staffed but this shouldn't result in cold, small portions and poor service.

The only thing I can say was good was the location. Very quiet and 10-15 minutes walk into the city felt like we could escape after a day of exploring.

Loved Durham so will definitely be back, but will be staying elsewhere next time.

We stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights and couldn't have picked a better hotel. The manager and all staff were professional, friendly and helpful. There were Covid systems in place that made us feel safe. The decor of the hotel is lovely and the food was lovely and cooked just right. We were in room 13 which was spotless and clean on arrival. With a good shower and facilities. The room was a little dark but didn't put us off as we were hardly in the room as there was plenty to see around Durham. Car parking was free which was a bonus and the location was brilliant just 5 mins out of centre and a few minutes from train station. Will definitely be returning and would recommend the hotel.

We visited for Sunday Lunch on the recommendation of a fellow artist friend. The pub has just started a brew Sunday lunch combination offer, 2 course or 3 courses for set prices. We had the 2 course offer. We picked starters and main. The scotch egg was delicious and the soup de jour of a light chicken broth was also delicious. We both had the pork option, which was presented with additional green veg and cauliflower cheese. The cauliflower cheese alone could have been eaten as a main course as it was also delicious, one of the best we have tasted. The staff were all very good and our plates and glasses were removed unobtrusively. My pet hate is empty glasses left with empty bottles on the table. All in all I would highly recommend it. I’d forgotten what a quiet, lovely place it was amongst the trees and there’s also a small car park. A big Bbonus in Durham.

We’ve just spent two great nights at this lovely hotel. It has been a belated 60th birthday treat for me postponed from May because of the dreaded COVID!
To say that the staff were nothing but professional would be an understatement! Very expertly run especially in these crazy times with the emphasis on customer safety. A very nice welcome on arrival with all the information one would need to get you around the hotel and the lovely city of Durham. Tastefully decorated rooms with everything you need including an iron and ironing board, smart TV,hairdryer and bags of tea, coffee etc. Brilliant shower that nearly blows your head off too!
Food wise the menu was really varied and meals are served all day. Great breakfast to set you on your way and service with a smile. I cannot find anything negative to say about this lovely place and found the people of Durham very welcoming. Definitely will be coming back. Andy and all the staff never seemed to stop working all day. Ten out of ten.

This hotel looked great on the internet - we chose it for the cosy looking rooms, the free parking, breakfast included and the proximity to the town centre.

The good points - just 10 minutes walk to the town centre, which means you are central enough but in a quiet location.

First impressions were great. The inn looks welcoming and our greeting was warm and friendly.

But from there it goes downhill.

Our room was cold. The radiator appeared to be on full but was badly positioned opposite the bathroom and next to the door. The bathroom was totally unheated and absolutely freezing. The bedroom was very cold. We had to request an additional duvet as the one provided was very lightweight.

The room itself was decorated with a heavy anaglypta type wallpaper on the walls and ceiling which was painted beige (I remember anaglypta being popular in the 80's). If you don't know what anaglypta is, it's basically a white wallpaper with a raised pattern. The fact the walls and ceiling had this heavy pattern painted beige seemed to draw the room in and make it feel claustrophobic.

It's an old fashioned place which means you are given actual keys on a keyring to get in the front door and your room. That meant you could hear keys jangling and making a noise as people came back at night or left their rooms in the morning. Modern keycards would be a worthwhile investment.

Breakfast was a disappointment. I had looked forward to an individually cooked breakfast (rather than the buffet style) but the bacon was rock hard and the mushrooms cold. The dining area wasn't busy at the time. The chef and waitress both had long hair that wasn't secured in a bun or net and I did find a long red hair attached to the side of my plate. There was little point complaining as the morning staff just weren't that professional. It's obvious there is no front of house manager on duty in the morning.

It's a shame as this really has the potential to be an amazing hotel. It's a brilliant location and a lovely building. But it needs a bit of TLC, both in terms of the building and the service. And the heating !!

We really enjoyed our stay in this hidden gem hotel. We spent three nights here, to visit Durham centre and to make a day trip to Edinburgh by train. The location was perfect for both. We were very relieved to be able to park our car safely for the duration of our stay.

Our room was warm, clean and well furninshed with a shiny clean shower room. We chose not to have housekeeping service in to our room, but instead asked for supplies to be left outside, which was done.

We found the hotel dining to be excellent. Our breakfasts were perfectly cooked to order and dinner in the hotel was similarly a treat. I am amazed to read that a previous guest complained about the staff, as we found them all, without exception, to be diligent, friendly, professional and effiicient.

Our only reason for not giving the five stars was that we felt that our accomodation was rather small for the price we paid. We appreciate though that we are also paying for the convenience of the location and the parking.

We certainly would stay there again and recommend it. I suggest that you book ahead as it seemed busy for the duration of our mid-week stay and we are told that it is very popular with parents visiting students in the nearby Halls of residence.

I have given this hotel a 4 rating because it is a good value hotel with plenty of parking situated conveniently close to Durham city centre (10 min walk). However, whilst the website says all rooms have King size beds I would dispute this as neither room we occupied had this. Also the first ‘deluxe’ room we were put in was extremely small. We had to move rooms after the first night due to another guest next door who had their TV on loud until after 1am and then snored very loudly for the rest of the night! A very big thank you to Amelia, who, when I mentioned these problems to her next morning, took great pains to get us moved to another (bigger) room straightaway and ensured that this all went smoothly for us. Staff were all very helpful, breakfast was good and the one evening meal we had there was typical pub grub but perfectly adequate and good value.

Can I arrange a trip to the Holy Island from this facility?
Answer from Scotty

I'm assuming you wouldn't be driving? This hotel is very close to Durham train station so I think you'd need to catch a train north. Berwick on Tweed would probably be the closest station to Holy Island (maybe about an hour on train from Durham?) Then it would need to be a local bus or taxi. But you'd need to align times to make sure you arrive when the causeway to the island is open.
