The guided tour is great and lasts about an hour. You can see some interesting bits but unfortunately access is limited as most of castle is student accommodation!! Outside of term you can book rooms as it operates as a hotel !! A number of rooms are in the keep so you would have fantastic views

Durham castle is one of the only castles I have visited that is also used as student accommodation. I think because of this it also has a great atmosphere. There are specific times for a tour and we were met by a guide who told us interesting facts about the old castle and its history. It was good to look...

Wow, what an experience! I visited Durham with my 11 year old son, who is currently studying medieval history at school. I called to book a tour of the castle as part of the visit. Staff were very friendly and so helpful they even sent me a map of Durham as we had never visited before, and all at the...

Thank you little sister for getting a stay here for my wife's birthday. There are two bedrooms available to stay in at Durham Castle; we stayed in the Prince Bishop room and it is utterly amazing. The castle is part of the University and you can stay here like any hotel. Parking is in front of the Cathedral which is...

We went on the official guided tour. Although there were only four of us the young lady guide did an excellent job and made us feel very welcome. As one place on the tour was shut, she added another place which would not normally be open to visitors. Good value for money, efficient, friendly and informative. I would also recommend...

It's a lovely hotel and definitely has a feel of a castle. However, it involves a LOT of steps (over 100 to my bedroom) so you definitely need to have a level of fitness to stay here! I remember one time I came down to the foyer, remembered I'd forgotten something in my room and decided to give up and...

Not allowed to roam around unsupervised as it's a residential university college, so the only way to see it unless you have a student in the family is to take the conducted tour. Our guide was a classics student, Harriet, who confessed to feeling a bit nervous as it was her very first. Well she needn't have worried as she...

This is a small castle once occupied by local bishops and is part of the University and Cathedral complex. The tour took about an hour and was interesting and informative. Tour tickets seem to sell out fast so be sure to buy them in advance. I initially was not going to take the tour but you apparently need a tour...

Comfortable and good value room in the keep - stairs keep you fit. Atmospheric breakfast in the Great Hall - plentiful variety on offer, including for vegetarians. Also visit the undercroft bar for atmosphere. Entitled to a free tour of the castle - don't miss it - the historic features are amazing. Helpful reception staff.

We stayed here for 1 night and it was absolutely gorgeous in beautiful surroundings. I caught myself just wandering around beaming from ear to ear. Our bedroom was a decent size and the bed was ok, only real negative was the shower was awful - a case of trying to dodge the dribbles. A very nice cooked breakfast with plenty...
