The Bannatyne Hotel Durham offers a mixed bag of experiences, with some guests commending the clean and comfortable rooms and the hotel's convenient location near Durham centre. However, opinions diverge on the hotel's value and room quality, with some unexpected costs dampening the perceived value. While the staff is often recognized for their friendliness, service can be hit-and-miss. The atmosphere is criticized for its lack of charm and dated appearance, despite certain modern elements. Amenities like the gym and pool are highlights, although the spa services have room for improvement.

The hotel is only a 15 minute bus ride from the centre of Durham and is easily the best value accommodation for a comfortable overnight stay. Rooms are clean and have tea and coffee making facilities. The staff are very welcoming and dealt with us efficiently especially at check-in when all I wanted was to to get to my room to sleep after a long day of working then travelling by train from Manchester and arriving after 11:15pm. If we were going to stay a week visiting the region, we would definately stay here for the comfort, parking, location and nearby bus services to the city centre and the price for two sharing is better than other accommodation options within Durham and its surrounding area.

Good value for money but carpets in my room (17) were stained and needed a good clean. Shower door may have been missing or poor design as water splashed out onto floor while showering.
Reception staff - helpful and friendly. Cafe/restaurant - Good arrangement to have an evening meal. No eat in but call, order and then collect. They'll serve your meal on a plate (with proper cutlery) so you don't have to eat from a takeaway box. For breakfast, you can eat in.

Dear NCC337607, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts after your visit to Bannatyne Hotel Durham. I will certainly look at the issues raised by you. Customers do from time to time manage to spill liquid onto the carpets in the rooms. We do use a carpet cleaner to try to remove these but for the stubborn stains we need time to replace the whole carpet. We are looking into the shower cubicle issue in room 17. I do hope that you try us again in the future. Kind Regards Matthew Emery Resort Manager - Durham Resort.

Fantastic from start to finish
Room spotless Bathroom lovely one snag as you get out of the shower cubicle don’t grab the towel rail heater it was hot. Maybe a warning notice should be put in place . Breakfast wonderful staff so lovely the chap on reception he was so friendly and helpful as was the domestics on duty. Word of advice if you book this hotel go direct with them because if you book with booking.com it’s an extra £20 pound to use the pool. But definatley stay again thanks all xxx

Dear Throssellsnest07, Thank you so much for your wonderful review with regards to your recent stay at Bannatyne Resort Durham. I will certainly look at the possibility of a sign on the towel rail as the they do get hot. There is a switch to turn them on and off next to the light switch, just incase for your next visit. I will certainly pass on your staff comments to the rest of the team as I am sure that they will appreciate your feedback. The team and I look forward to your next visit Regards Matthew Emery Resort Manager - Durham

Arrived at the hotel in the afternoon, checked in, COVID precautions in place at reception desk.
Allocated a room on the 3rd floor, made my way up and into the room and was immediately disappointed. The room was dated and and had an all over grubby appearance, marks all over the walls and skirting's. There was a part of the ceiling coming away and the bottom of the wardrobe was broken.
this was all a bit disappointing but then I started noticing the actual grime that was over most of the room that was obviously due to lack of a thorough clean.
There was what looked to be tea or other beverage splashed all over the bedside table, there was a remnant of what I suspect was food on the beside table. The glass topped desk also had food residue and a stick patch on the top. There was a dead fly stuck to the curtain, another hanging from the ceiling and cobwebs where the headboard meets the bed.
All of this could've have been remedied with a thorough clean of the room.
This level of cleanliness and hygiene is unacceptable in normal circumstances but we are in the midst of a pandemic, with the North East being a hot spot. Its just not good enough.
I also have to comment on the cups being wrapped in cling film, doesnt look nice and not sure it achieves anything!

On the positive side, the lady at reception was very helpful, moved me to another room that was cleaner and was very apologetic. I was also approached the following morning by a gentleman who apologised for the room.

I would not stay here again though.

Dear 328anmarried, Thank you for sharing your findings after your recent visit in October. I am so sorry that the room offered to you in the first place fell well short of our usual standards. I am happy that we were able to rectify this and offer a room that was to our usual high standards. I will certainly be discussing this with the housekeeping team and will also ask the maintenance team ro repaint the room and repair the ceiling tape in the shower room. We do have recently refurbished rooms on our ground floor that are of a premium standard. I am sorry that you will not be choosing to stay with us again. Kind Regards Matthew Emery Resort Manager - Durham Resort.

The staff were absolutely lovely. But that was all that was good about the experience.

The rooms are tired, the bathroom smelt very stale and musty. The first night the room on the top floor was unbearably hot so we had to have the window open but that meant very loud road noise throughout the night - so ask for a room away from the roadway.

On the second night there were two large hen parties in the hotel. The hotel continues to sell alcohol all night from the bar but only allows you to drink it in your rooms .....so obviously that resulted in a noisy hen party going on in the room next door to ours with screaming. singing and continual door slamming until past 1.30 in the morning.
Breakfast is in the health club next door - extremely limited menu, not much more than a Costa coffee in terms of food, and the hotel is too far away from any other local breakfast options so we checked out and headed into town with bags instead.

The access to the health club is not free either - it's hidden in T&C's and costs £10 per person.

Our local family expressed surprise that we'd chosen to stay here ........and now I'd agree with them. There are other better options locally.

Dear MartSV Thank you for sharing your review with regards to your recent two nights stay at Bannatyne Hotel Durham. Unfortunately we do from time to time have noisy guests who stay with us over the weekend. The night porter will always request guests to be quiet. The bar is open for those guests who wish to enjoy a responsible beverage in the bar / reception area. During the summer months the rooms in the hotel can get warm and we do provide fans at reception for the guests to use. KInd Regards Matthew Emery Resort Manager - Durham

Perfect hotel for a short stay to drop off at Durham uni. Clean, comfortable, friendly, lots of parking, we arrived late and check in was open and welcoming. Slight mix up with the rooms - given a double but I booked a twin - sorted immediately and given lots of apologies.
We bought breakfast at the spa next door, this was nice, however a little expensive. Lots of places closer by to go which we noticed when we drove away.
Hotel was extremely Covid secure, it took 9 mins on a clear country road to reach the college in Durham . We will definitely be returning each time we make the long journey to drop off or pick up.

I liked this hotel as it was a bit different to the travel lodges work normally puts me up in, with better showers, a better designed room, and nice and modern features. Where it lacks is the usual local food option, which in this case is in the neighbouring bannatyne gum/spa. The food was fairly average and not especially filling after a long hard day of physical work. I’d expect more, although it was better than e.g. a Toby Carvery standard.
I would stay again as it was clean and functional and close to the motorway junction, but if I am paying the bill I would look elsewhere.

Dear Mikeonabike2, Thank you for taking the time to share your review with others after your recent visit to Bannatyne Hotel Durham. I am happy that you found the hotel to be clean and tidy with better showers and a better design than other hotels. The added benefit of having the Health Club on-site is certainly better value for money than other neighbouring hotels. I am sorry that you found the Health Club cafe bar lacking in a hearty meal after a long days work. I will discuss this with the team and look at offering a better special menu. I hope to see you again soon. Kind Regards Matthew Emery Resort Manager - Durham

Needed a good location to access Durham for a short stay & was more than happy when Bannatyne popped up on our search.

My wife was over the moon with the swimming pool experience & commented on the cleanliness of everything in and around the Spa area.

The room was huge with a large comfy bed, Clean with ample tea & coffee.

The location suited our needs, Approx 40 minute walk into central Durham, Or Catch the Number 20 bus from the stop a 2 minute walk from reception.

My only gripe would be that the bar & restaurant area resembled a canteen so not very welcoming, This would not put us off from booking again as the positives outweigh the negatives.

Make sure when you book that you can access the pool and gym facilities in the Bannatyne health club next door - a large indoor pool and the sauna and big gym made this a very good value stay. It is open until 22.00 on weekdays and serves food - you have breakfast at the health club (extra charge but much better than a standard hotel buffet). The hotel provides towels at the front desk. Bring your swimming costumes!

The rooms are fine - ideally, ask for one facing the front of the hotel as the ones on the back have some road noise, especially if you have to open the window (no air con). The double beds are big, we did have some issues flushing the toilet. There is plenty of parking on the property and Durham city centre is either a long walk or a short drive away. The front desk has a map and there is a petrol station nearby and an excellent launderette a few hundred metres away.

Durham is a lovely city with a beautiful cathedral.

We stayed here back in April and unfortunately we were really not happy with our stay.

We booked a spa stay and on arrival at the hotel we entered the room to find that it absolutely stunk. The room was very foisty smelling and we had to open all the windows, we could not find the source of the smell until we entered the bathroom and discovered it was the toilet.

I immediately went downstairs and informed reception who came up to the room, he put some bleach down the toilet and then sprayed an air freshener around the room.

This didn't really rectify the issue as the room needed to be aired so we went to the spa and unfortunately had to make do with leaving the windows open all night.

Unfortunately this was a christmas present and it really did ruin our planned romantic stay away and took away from the amazing massage that we had in the spa.
