The Penhelig Arms Hotel & Restaurant garners praise for its friendly and attentive service, with staff members often going above and beyond for their guests, despite a few instances of rudeness reported. Cleanliness is a standout feature, with guests consistently impressed by the pristine rooms boasting great views and amenities. Opinions on the rooms are mixed, with some finding them comfortable and others suggesting they could use some updates. While the hotel's location and views are appreciated, the amenities sometimes fall short of expectations for the rating. The hotel's pricing, particularly for drinks, is considered steep by many, though some deem the overall experience as providing good value.

I’ve stayed here quite a few times now, never in high season though, and just love Penhelig Arms for its beautiful and peaceful location facing the Dyfi estuary. However, although my friend and I had a lovely two night Travelzoo stay here recently, I didn’t feel that the overall standard was quite as good as I had previously experienced.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have entered hotel rooms across the world, only to find that the room has been made up as a double rather than the requested twin and, annoyingly, that was the case here, despite the e-mails confirming my request for a twin. Alisha sprang into action, though, and within a short time the double bed was transformed into two singles. Our room, Gruffudd ap Cynan (#12) inside the main building, was a decent size and had lovely views of the water. However, there was a real draught from the two sash windows, admittedly not helped by the wind and rain battering the place. Although there were blinds, as well as curtains, the blinds were not working which was irritating as they would, at least, have kept some of the draught away. Also, the curtains were not a good fit and light crept in around the edges, waking me earlier than I would have liked. Again, the blinds would have helped with this issue too.

Housekeeping was not the best and failed to properly replenish the hospitality tray or toilet tissue, the latter being brought to our room after we contacted reception. We never had any soap for the washbasin either and, because neither of us had thought to bring soap with us, we had to use body wash each time we washed our hands.

Breakfast was decent, although there was a limited choice of yoghurt and my friend tried to order Eggs Benedict on one of the mornings, only to be told that the kitchen had ‘run out’. I assumed that the hollandaise sauce was the culprit and that the kitchen buys this rather than preparing their own. The breakfast waitress (sorry, I don’t know her name but she has short blonde hair and has been there for a few years to my knowledge) is so pleasant and helpful, always offering suggestions about where to go and what to see. She’s a real asset to the place.

We ate in the restaurant on the first night when we shared a gorgeous gooey baked camembert with an assortment of crudites for our starter, followed by calves liver for the pair of us. The meal was enjoyable, and there was an excellent selection of vegetables which were perfectly cooked (al dente) and so tasty. However, the tubes had not been removed from the calves liver, which I would have expected, and the liver itself was not the most tender. Overall, though, the meal was good and we agreed that we would be happy to eat in the restaurant again. Once more, mention must go to Alisha, who was excellent and so helpful. Another asset to Penhelig Arms.

I know that there have been some changes since my last visit twelve months ago, and just hope that the small niggles don’t become bigger issues as a result of these changes. Despite a few grumbles, and the dreadful weather, we had a lovely stay and will definitely return.

The hotel is in a superb location, we stayed for 2 nights on a Travelzoo voucher so we’re not surprised to be given a small room on the second floor up 2 flights of narrow, difficult stairs and up and down steps in the corridor. The room was very small, for one person to move around the other had to sit on the bed. The bed was comfortable but badly made up, crumpled under sheet obviously not touched on the second day, the duvet was not good quality. There were hairs in the shower. There was a bright light just outside and despite the blind and curtains which did not fit it was impossible to exclude this.
This hotel is dog friendly and much as I love dogs I do not like sleeping in a room where dogs may have slept the previous night.
The two female staff we had contact with were friendly and helpful but the barman needs to go on a charm course!
The breakfast was very good, freshly cooked. The dinner was good but the set menu was very limited and did not include popular basic items.
This hotel needs some TLC.

Booked via a large well known website and booked 2 suites for ourselves and our friends. Best decision I made in a long time.

Only 1 road leading into this small coastal village and 1 out, but the location is beautiful and right on the road opposite the sea. The hotel is 20yds from the sea. Car parking is an issue with the area and the car park to the hotel only has about 3 spaces, so you need to walk some distance from the £11 per day car park, however the suites come with a ramp nearby up to specific car parking spaces directly outside the rooms. It’s was perfect. This should be clearly highlighted by the hotel.

Great spacious and quiet rooms. Large bed (2 singles locked together) as well as a sofa bed. Lots of hanging space, fabulous bathroom and shower. Coffee and facilities great and the view is fantastic, so close to the sea.

There is a train track directly at the rear, but the trains don’t run very early and are not often so we found no issue with it at all.

Breakfast wasn’t included for us, but at £8.25 for hot drinks, fruit juice, toast, cereal, continental, full breakfast we found it incredible value and lovely quality too.

Loved the location, the rooms and the time here. We will be back.

Wouldn’t let me attach all the pictures but we were emailed the morning of our stay to tell us we wouldn’t be able to check in until 16:00 due to “deep clean” when we arrived there was mould in the shower, clearly a bit of spray and a sponge would have got it off as it was literally falling into the bath as we were showering. I also found a dark long hair in the bed when I opened it up. Pillows and mattresses were stained yellow or with blood. Dust all over skirting boards, Venetian blinds, towel rail and ceiling. Dressing table chair was covered in white/grey hairs and had stains all over. The place clearly hadn’t been hoovered properly as down by my bedside table were tablets which clearly belonged to the previous person who stayed in the room. I went out and got a dettol spray can and wipes and sprayed/wiped everything. We felt that we didn’t want to stay another night as it was so unclean but was told we wouldn’t get a refund for it!!! All we got in the end was free breakfast. The only reason I’ve given them more than 0 stars is because the staff were nice and I don’t believe it’s their fault and the location is just amazing!

Overall gutted about our accommodation feel like we’ve been robbed. Definitely would not stay again in the hotel looking at booking further in advance and getting a little apartment or cottage as some are actually cheaper than what we paid to go here for 2 nights and are more modern and have great cleaning ratings.

We stopped here with our two pooches in Feb 2023.

The hotel is nice and welcoming and the staff were all friendly and helpful.
Parking though is virtually non existent, unless you fall lucky and manage to get on to the tiny space opposite. Other than that it's £6.60 on the pay and display two minutes round the corner.
The room was clean in itself, but the carpets were stained and so was the sofa in the room. Bed was comfy and the room was lovely and warm, with excellent sea views.
Overall I feel that the hotel rooms and in general the hallways to the rooms needs money spending on it. Getting to the rooms is via a narrow, steep staircase with very low headroom.
We had breakfast here, which I rated as in the top three of the worst I have ever had. Two of the four of us went for the bigger version of the Full English. Only three slices of toast between us?
The beans on mine looked like that they had been scraped off the bottom of the pan, and i don't know which shop they get the black pudding from, but I have never seen a slice of black pudding that thin, in my life. There were no bowls for the cereals. no side plates for the croissant/toast. The server asked us what sauces we wanted and got answers off three people, but she didn't arrive with any.

We may revisit Aberdovey, because it is a lovely little spot, but I doubt that we'll be stopping at the Penhelig again.

Service was excellent from booking the table to the welcome on the evening and meal itself.

Good was delicious with sensible portion sizes meaning not a scrap was left on the plates.

Perfectly sensible prices too.

Well done Penhelig Arms…we’ll be back!

We stayed for two nights in one of the four premium apartments situated behind the main hotel, an outside staircase takes you down three flights to the main entrance on street level. There is a good size convenient private car park outside the apartments that is accessed up a steep slope just past the hotel entrance.
Unfortunately on the day we arrived there was building work with scaffolding next door and the road access was between a traffic light control system which made turning into the access harder. There was also a builders van on the access which we had to be moved, I’m just glad it wasn’t raining. The hotel manager said that they have spoken to the builders about this. However the room was fabulous, nicely decorated and furnished, a huge bed which was very comfortable and a large bathroom, down-lit with a bath and big powerful shower. It has good facilities with tv, kettle , hairdryer and white dressing gowns. It also has a large comfortable sofa sitting area. We only ate breakfast which was a good size, you can either have cooked or continental but service is good and the food tasty. Breakfast is £8.75

The only negatives;

No extendable shaving mirror with a good light, many places we stay are
the same not every man uses an electric razor I have always wet shaved

The furnishings were a little worn and tired

The door lock was loose and difficult to use

Nothing major and it wouldn’t stop us visiting again, Aberdovey a ten minute walk is a lovely village with great views over the estuary and perfect for water sports.

We booked a table because outside there was a five starr AA sign and as frequent visitors to the area we had never been to the hotel before.. This was anything but a five star experience. The restaurant served a just about adequaate pub meal. The prawn coctail had half a dozen prawns in a tiny dish with a slice of brown bread. The lamb steak was just ok - a little tough but accompanied by frozen chips, peas and onion rings and a small piece of tomato. The bill for 2 courses and 2 drinks came to £52. The lamb was only thing which appealed so we asked if there was a specials board. We were told no but there would be a new menu in September. How this is supposed to be relevant to the customer experience that evening puzzled me!We were sat at a table near the door which was open and draughty so I asked to be moved to the ne xt table. I was told the table had alreay been requested but when the diners appeared for this table they were offered a window table. Other tables were free all the time we were there so we could have been placed there. The waiter closed the door but off course it was open and shut frequently. There are super places to dine in Aberdyfi and Towyn and we won't come back here. I really don't leave negative comments for no reason and do understand the staffing difficulties. However, the price, service and quality of the meal will mean people will eventually go elsewhere because this is not an adequate dining experience for the price.

This location has had a longstanding positive reputation in the area and that was precisely why I decided to visit with my family for dinner.

This is now sadly part of a hotel group and that has reflected in the menu.

We ordered starters including a Nacho Platter - which I have to say was terrible - no servers checked on our food anyway this carried onto our main courses with my steak - I asked for medium and it came medium rare.

To top it off, it was my sons birthday of which I sent via their app for a cake.

Nothing was done.

They have a huge opportunity with this location which they are sadly dropping the ball

I for one will never go back.

Dear Jeff, We are very sorry that you feel so let down by your recent visit. We appreciate your comments regarding our current food offer, and we have fed all of the negative feedback to the brewery who i am sure in time will review our current dishes and create some fantastic new specials. This was obviously not possible in the current climate and i hope that this gives you a little more understanding. I again am sorry that we could not do anything for your sons birthday, but in the current rules we are running on bare essentials in the business You would have been allowed to bring a cake which in hindsight we should have fed back to you pre visit. I hope that nest time if you decide to try us again in the future we leave you with a sense of happiness with your visit, kindest regards .

We have been waiting a long time to visit The Penhelig, however we were very disappointed that our stay here didn’t come up to our expectations. We had stayed the previous night in a fantastic hotel in Anglesey so were relieved that the restraints of Covid hadn’t spoilt our travels. Our suite at the Penhelig had stunning views over the estuary but no soap to wash our hands and paper cups to drink out of. The bathroom floor had grout missing in parts leaving jagged edges on the tiles, that a child may have caught their feet on, the blind was broken so wouldn’t close and the bath plug had fallen off and was left on the side. All things that a little care and attention could have easily put right. We had an evening meal that is just very basic pub grub, oven ready chips etc. The next day going to our breakfast allotted time, we experienced a very long wait to even be acknowledged, stood in reception listening to the telephone ringing constantly. We were then were placed in the bar area, which appeared to have not been cleaned from the night before, to wait even longer to have our coffee order taken. There were no yoghurts or cereal before the full breakfasts and we had to flag down someone to ask for orange juice, all this whilst still listening to a constant phone ring. All in all not a good experience at all, it seems that this lovely hotel has been taken over by a chain and the love, care and attention it needs is sorely missing.

I am sorry no one got back to you after your calls, we try to get back to everyone usually late afternoon.
