Robin & Louella Hanbury-Tenison have handed over Cabilla Manor to their son Merlin and his wife Lizzie and have built themselves a lovely new house close by. Right in the heart of Poldark country on the edge of Bodmin Moor, this is a working farm surrounded by acres of ancient woodland and open moorland. There are horses, Highland cattle and sheep. The farm is currently being re-wilded to make the environment even more enchanting. Walks through the woods, across Bodmin Moor and along many footpaths are all close by. Half an hour's drive from both north and south coasts, spectacular Cornish beaches, fishing villages and many famous gardens, including the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the astonishing Eden Project are easily reached. The Old Deer House is an exciting contemporary building with glorious views over the countryside. There are two attractive double bedrooms for bed and breakfast guests. One has a Four Poster double bed and the other double can be made into a twin. Both bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with both shower and bath. The new home of explorer Robin and his wife Louella, who has been all over the world with him, The Old Deer House, is full of books he has written and interesting artefacts brought back from their travels. Their home is beautifully decorated and furnished and guests are looked after wonderfully. You will receive a warm welcome; tea on arrival, drinks, and we are happy to book you a table somewhere local for supper.

Although we have stayed in many B&Bs' and hotels this will remain so high on our list of happy memories. A wonderdful home with absolutely stunning views from the beautiful lounge and veranda. Tea and cakes added to the warm welcome from Louella - the evening glass of wine was a nice touch. Nothing was too much trouble . Such a comfortable bed and super shower plus great breakfast. Louella made driving etc so easy by giving us her own written instructions and suggested places to visit and eat. All of this plus being able to spend time with the dogs and horses. It was a privilege to experience this home from home ambiance in such an interesting and superb setting

Robin and Louella were the perfect attentive hosts, in a very welcoming and friendly house. This is a quiet, relaxed location in the moors and would suit a wide variety of guests. My own stay involved travelling to family elsewhere in Cornwall but I was made to feel part of their family during the time I was at the house. I wished I had more time to spend closer to the Deer House, to enjoy chatting about travel and to follow up on their recommendations for local restaurants. The house itself is very luxurious and comfortable but it was the hosts themselves who made the stay special.

I'm not used to talking in superlatives, but this has to among the best B&B's anywhere in the country. From a welcome tea and cake on the balcony (with a wonderful view) to an incredibly comfortable bed and exquisite breakfast in the conservatory, I was simply blown away. It is a most wonderfully peaceful place with Louella and Robin perfect hosts. Just hoping that I can get an excuse for another trip to Cornwall before too long!

Louella and Robin are exceptional hosts welcoming you into their beautiful home and chatting about their extraordinary travels. The scenery, horses, dogs, and chickens make you feel very relaxed and secluded but it is a great location for exploring all areas of Cornwall. When we returned in the evening we were offered drinks and would sit under the verandah with beautiful views.

Our two day stay was like a visit to old friends. Louella and Robyn made us feel very welcome and were fonts of information and guidance on the surrounding area. We recommend the old deer house for a stay that will be gull of happy memories
