I’ve been staying at Rockliffe now for the past 15 years and this is the first 4 Star review I’ve given it.
The positives were the lovely welcome from Laura O’Neill on check in and the help from concierge with our luggage as we were staying 3 nights and don’t travel light. We were originally booked into Rowan 14 and glad to see all the New Hall rooms had been refreshed into ultra modern rooms. The mattresses, however, haven’t been. We both had THE most uncomfortable nights sleep in 214 we requested to change rooms. Laura was so understanding and helpful and got us switched very quickly to 219. What a difference the mattress was.
What could have been better was breakfast. There just doesn’t seem to be a 5 Star hotel that can fluff breakfast up 3 mornings running. It’s all waiter service now. The help yourself buffet has gone. We were disappointed with that. Now it was either the tea was cold as they were having problems with the hot water machine, or the cooked breakfasts were lukewarm as the plates were cold and we were kept waiting ages or they forgot items on the cooked breakfast. We did speak up. But after waiting so long we just wanted to eat our breakfast. The carpet in The Orangery is looking a bit threadbare in places too. Could have been better.,
All that for £930 for 3 nights B&B. Oh dear. We won’t be rushing back.

I and my sister went here for a overnight spa day treat for our birthdays, Overall it was a great time, the hotel is beautiful, the staff were so attentive and polite and the room was beautiful, Our food was lovely too. I do however have a few complaints that I think could be improved on, 1. In the spa the foot pedicure machines were not working, no sign, but that's understandable, it happens. Minor. 2. No biscuits, No chocolates, or little gifty knicknacks left in our room which I find odd, I have been to less rated places who have done this. They did leave us a lovely card though. 3. We booked the infinity pool for half an hour, the room next to it was full of young women who were celebrating a hen do, which made us feel awkward, I felt like they could have arranged the time slots so we did not disturb their celebration and vice versa. 4. My biggest complaint, the breakfast in the orangery room, we had to check out by 11, My sister ordered a starter, which came out really quickly, we then ordered 2 full english breakfasts, after 35 minutes of waiting we were wondering what was going on so we asked a waitress if she could inquire, which she said she would, she came back telling us the staff were making it, We said thats fine, 35 plus minutes passed and we had to check out in 40 minutes, we asked a second member of staff what was going on and that we had seen 4 people served who had came in quite a long time after us, including a full english, he apologised and again went to check, explaining the chef was making it (a second time?) waited 10 or so minutes and it came, it was nice but we felt like we had to rush by the time we got it, overall, we waited an hour and half for a forgotten breakfast and had to inquire twice, which for a place of this rating is not acceptable, The orangery room was not that busy either, We also never got asked by staff if we would like refreshments while we were waiting and had to ask while inquiring about the wait. Disappointing experience at breakfast. However, working on those things alone, it was a really enjoyable stay and I would definitely come back.

Upon arrival we received a lovely greeting from the concierge who offered us to park in the section next to reception. Our bags were taken and appeared in our room when we arrived later that afternoon. Really great start.
Our spa day was lovely, the spa is comparable to others we have visited. The rooftop spa really made our visit and stood out, we would definitely return and spend more time in this section as we found it extremely relaxing. Lunch was tasty.
We checked in at 3pm promptly, our room was not ready before this time, which was fine. The New Hall room we were staying in was a standard room at RH I believe, we found it comfortable being spacious, clean and decorated to our taste. I personally enjoyed the TV in the bath. We both slept well. We would book this room type again.
Drinks in the cocktail bar and dinner in the Orangery made for a memorable and special evening. The cocktails were perfect. We enjoyed the 7 course tasting menu, although would have preferred slightly larger portions. The Wagyu beef was a highlight for us, although more than one or two mouthfuls perhaps, especially given the meal was ÂŁ500+. The accompanying wine flight really made the meal, our sommelier was very knowledgeable and the wine very good.
Room service was efficient, we had a number of drinks delivered to the room at various times which all arrived quickly. We also took breakfast in our room, again we did find the portion sizes to be small. In addition to this, our breakfast was missing the toast we ordered, so we did leave slightly hungry which was a little disappointing after such a lavish stay.
ALL off the staff we encountered from start to finish were excellent.
RH has a official five star rating, which it fully deserves! We will certainly be back although would be more mindful when ordering food. Our review would have been five star, if not for the portion sizes at both Dinner and Breakfast from the Orangery.

Stayed overnight on valentines weekend , lovely room next to reception but strange in the bathroom , the easy access was ok but 2 half used toilet rolls and no soap for hand wash was not what I was expecting from a 5 star establishment !! I had to use the shower gel to wash my hands after using the toilet so not impressed . 90 minutes in the spa gardens was good although fires were not on so didn’t have the feel of the pictures advertised , the food in clubhouse was exceptional really tasty we sat in quiet bar afterwards but a rowdy group came in so we left . Breakfast was good although it took a really long time was like 15 minutes for a cuppa tea then they brought the toast with it which was then cold by the time our main breakfast came , the whiskey porridge was my partners favourite and mine was delicious but not wowed by the main breakfast I’ve had much better elsewere , relaxing stay but not sure if I would return .

I have Just recently stayed at Rockcliffe Hall with a friend, From the moment we arrived we were well and truly looked after. The staff were extremely professional, polite and couldn’t do enough for you. The hotel was immaculate, the room was spacious and luxurious with two double beds, crisp linen, fluffy pillows and even a television in the bathroom. The grounds were beautifully kept and a delight to walk around. The food in the Orangery was to a very high standard, Having dined at many a fine dining establishment this was certainly high up there as one of my most memorable, using most of their ingredients from their own walled garden it followed their fork to plate ethos through each course they served. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairing, the Spanish wine sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and the wines that she recommended accompanied the courses beautifully. The lounges were opulent and very grand but cosy, the bar well stocked with the finest spirits and local gins were aplenty. The cocktails were very Carefully made using the finest and freshest ingredients by experienced bar staff who made sure each cocktail had attention to detail.
The club house served less formal but very good food, this is a short walk from the main house or the hotel can offer a ride in their one of many buggies or in the cooler months a ride in their van. The club house is set in the beautiful grounds of the hotel, very convenient for the golfers who wish to take a break from playing.
The spa was extremely clean and offered an extensive list of spa treatments, the body bliss was amazing and a real treat to help you get relaxed into the spa experience, the thermal journey was a little heaven where you could just sit back and forget about the daily rat race we all find ourselves in. The spa garden with infinity pool where you can even purchase a glass of your favourite chilled beverage is a must, Albeit an extra cost to the main spa. It truly is beautiful Lunch in the spa was again to a very high Standard offering a healthy option where preferred.
Plenty of options for breakfast I can highly recommend the eggs Benedict and the freshly squeezed orange juice a real treat.
An unforgettable weekend break, I would highly recommend this beautiful hotel where nothing is too much trouble and the Food is exquisite. I would Most definitely love to return.

Rockliffe Hall is a great place overall to visit. The grounds are extensive and the facilities are varied. However there are areas for improvement.
Being a spa member I was disappointed to learn that my partner was refused a drink at the hotel bar as there was a wedding on, while waiting for my spa treatment to finish. My partner was beginning to be served by an employee until he was interrupted by presumably a supervisor, who informed their colleague “you can’t serve him, there is a wedding on”. It was communicated in a rather abrupt manner. This was repeated twice, to which my partner thought to try NU Sana for a drink instead (something which should have been offered from a customer service and business acumen point of view). If I had been a guest staying at the hotel I would have been disappointed to learn I would not be able to be served in the main hotel bar due to a wedding.
The service in NU Sana could be improved; too many people stood around without being attentive and offering great customer service. On a recent occasion we queried whether we could have a table but were informed that there was no space so we sat and had some drinks on the sofa instead. We asked the waiter for a snacks menu to which he was confused but I am aware they do offer nibbles having had them before. Throughout the hour we were there, there was adequate tables so it appeared we could have eaten in the restaurant. We have also witnessed this happen to other people while having a drink on another occasion.
Also recently, drinks were added to our room bill which we had not had. So advise checking your bill, from the hotel bar before checking out.
We had spa treatments booked for mid morning following an overnight stay and a receptionist had informed us the night before “to leave it with her” about seeing if we could delay the room an extra hour so that we could enjoy our spa treatments in a relaxed manner and change in the room afterwards. However the next day there was another spa receptionist who offered frosty customer service and explained this wasn’t an option unless we were willing to pay an extra £20 per hour - this added too much of a commercial approach and it appears income from every small angle is prioritised over customer service and customer loyalty. Also, were not informed of having to apply spa member discount to drinks prior to signing them to the room. Was told on this occasion discount would be able to be applied, while paying on check out. This shouldn’t make a different.
Experienced the festive afternoon tea and it was ok. The meat quality in the festive roll was a bit gristly.
The clubhouse staff are attentive and the spa team are welcoming.
In summary, a lovely place to visit however think the teams and different areas of the hotel appear disjointed.

A Christmas to remember! We did the 3 night break over Christmas 2024 and the service, food and atmosphere was impeccable. We are firm fans of the hotel and spa and visit regularly but felt the food went up a notch in recent months and the service too. We both had treatments and said it was the most relaxed we had been in a longtime. I felt the staff couldn’t do enough to help us make magical moments for our little boy and for that we really appreciate the efforts (especially the doorman who took us on a buggy tour to find the bunnies thank you!)
The only slight hiccup to the stay was the Boxing Day ball, advertised as a 3 course dinner was actually a buffet which is tricker with a little one in tow, so should be advertised as such, but all in all an excellent stay and felt like value for money.
Will be back again soon!

We stayed here for one night at the end of august, from arrival to departing everything was perfect, the staff are absolutely amazing and nothing is a bother for them. The room was beautiful and very clean, the food is incredible and I was very grateful for the chef to make me a dish which wasn’t on the evening menu, it was delicious, I had the best chocolate torte I’ve ever tasted, amazing. Overall everything was amazing and I cannot wait to come back again as soon as possible.

We went for Mother’s Day afternoon tea which coincidentally was also my wife’s birthday. We arrived 5 minutes before our 2:30 reservation but were ushered to a side room to wait for 20 minutes until our table was ready in the Orangery.
When we were shown to our table I said to the waiter that it was also my wife’s birthday as well as Mother’s Day at which point another waitress appeared and said well you must celebrate with some Champagne. To be honest I wasn’t sure if this was part of the package (£55 per head) or not but as it was a special occasion we agreed. The waitress poured sufficient to fill half of the champagne flute glasses and we enjoyed our half a glass each.
It was only when I paid the bill at the end that I was told I was being charged ÂŁ60 for the 3 half glasses of Champagne which I feel is absolutely extortionate. When you buy a car the Latin phrase is Caveat Emptor meaning Buyer Beware! My advice to anybody visiting Rockcliffe Hall for a special occasion is check the small print before agreeing to half a glass of champagne it is an absolute rip off and the champagne was quite average. If you want London prices in County Durham for average champagne this is the place to go!

Attended here with a large group of friends for a celebration of life afternoon tea/wake following a funeral. Plenty of parking spaces and very well attended gardens and lawns. The hotel is immaculate and the setting in the Orangery for the event was lovely especially as the sun was shining on a winter afternoon. The staff were friendly and attentive and helpful without being intrusive. Beer at the bar was £6 a pint ( although they need to have regular shaped pint glasses ). The afternoon tea element was stunning with tasty sandwiches sparkling wine and a wide selection of lovely small cakes and an absolutely outstanding sliced sausage roll. I managed to look at a menu - £70 for the alacarte menu so it’s the sort of place you’d probably only go to for a special occasion but if you did I’m sure you wouldn’t be disappointed.
