Queen Elena of Savoia’s old residence. Point of reference of the Italian hospitality for 70 years and historic abode of the fine dining. A charming and magnificent Italian tourist attraction. The Grande Albergo Miramare was born in 1947, but it roots are much older as it had been the summer residence of the Italian Royal family. The hotel is composed of six classic-styled villas wisely restored, though keeping unchanged its original structure; it’s surrounded by the Mediterranean maquis with an incomparable view over the of Gaeta. The main villa – Villa Anna – used to be Queen Elena’s private flat; today, it’s the royal suite of the hotel, maintaining both the furniture and the big wrought-iron chandelier intact, belonged to the Savoia family. Family holidays, business meetings, romantic getaways: whatever your stay is, Miramare always is the perfect location. All areas are typified by the Venetian elegant style and provided with all comfort equipments. Each room is one-of-a-kind: they all are enriched with classy, vintage and original furniture, and combined with relaxing and delicate colours. Balconies and terraces offer a breathtaking view perched over the Gulf of Gaeta. It’s been 70 years since the Grande Albergo Miramare became part of the history of the Italian hospitality and the tourism made in Italy. The Miramare is a big restaurant and one of the oldest in Italy, thanks to its long story and tradition imprinted by successful deeds, due to Celletti family at its third generation today. The Sala degli Specchi (the mirrors room) has been recently restored: it’s the building’s flagship because of its fine marble flooring, stunning pure gold chandeliers, magnificent mirrors, as well as the furniture once belonged to the Queen of Savoia. The room boasts an exclusive view over the Gulf of Gaeta. The Grotta del Fauno (the faun’s cavern) was discovered while digging for the restoration of the Mirrors room. The cavern once was the private royals’ cellar; today, it’s a restaurant room built in the stone, furnished with an unmistakable rough style and enriched with details dated back to 1800 but still perfectly preserved. The main wine and food organisations have been awarding the Miramare Restaurant over years; furthermore, it’s also recommended by both Michelin and Gambero Rosso guides. The Miramare Hotel really is a relaxing oasis. It is surrounded by the Mediterranean greenery overlooking the stunning Gulf of Gaeta, it’s provided with a seafront swimming pool and a private beach, which the personnel always take good care of. There is crystal-clear sea and an equipped beach, where it is possible to order lunch from the restaurant thanks to the staff who’s always at the guest’s disposal to guarantee the best wellness. Those who wish to enjoy the beach only without staying at the hotel, it is possible to reach it just passing by the reception.

Old Times. This place had to be absolutely top in XX century and still retains a lot of charm. Some places, like this hotel, get old very well, in spite of some minor inconveniences (e.g., lack of lift for upper floors, breakfast was a bit scarce). Views are spectacular and staff is very friendly indeed.

Held my daughters wedding here. Truly amazing experience. The buffet BEFORE the 5 course meal was tremendous in itself. The wedding meal was even more amazing. 5 stars for absolutely amazing service and quality. The staff were brilliant. Do great to celebrate an Italian wedding in this way

Myself and my wife recently had cause to stay in this hotel as we were there as part of a wedding party. The hotel was arranged through the wedding planner. I have to say that it was the most dissappointing 4 Star hotel I have stayed in in Italy to date. The Hotel had a run down look about it. Our room (203) was particularly small and in general looked shabby. Breakfast was nothing special with no apparent effort made to vary or expand on what was on offer each day. The staff at breakfast were particularly surly. In general the rooms were clean.

The hotel itself was a considerable walk from the town of Formia (30mins).
It was situated on a very busy road which while it had footpaths it proved very difficult to cross from one side to the other.

If you are thinking of staying here then my advice to you is dont. There has to be better than this.

Stayed in this hotel a few weeks ago as friends were holding their wedding in the area of Formia (not this hotel). When we arrived at the hotel we were delighted. It was on lovely grounds, the reception staff were very friendly and our room was idyllic, with a balcony overlooking the sea and beautiful palm trees. That is where the compliments ended, I'm afraid.

The rest of the staff were just short of pure ignorant. We were not made to feel welcome in their hotel, putting it mildly. Breakfast was served from 7 - 10 and it was like a scavange hunt to get food. It was your basic continental style breakfast but the staff were extremely slow to replenish eaten food and when you looked for their attention it took ages to get what you asked for.

The hotel is predominantly a Wedding Hotel were locals hold their wedding. The hotel does 2 per day. While were there, we saw weddings from Fri - Tues which meant that we were not able to get lunch or dinner. The staff were all occupied dealing with the wedding parties. If you ventured to the restaurant area you would be suitably ignored and obviously feel like you're intruding on someone's party. Basically, the weddings were held in the facilities that should be available to residents of the hotel, the weddings took priority.

The hotel is located about a fifteen minute walk from any form of amenity or eaterie. Locals are not accustomed to dealing with tourists and most restaurants did not have menus in the English language. This is forgivable, as it is most definitely not a tourist area. Unfortunately an organiser chooses this hotel without any consideration for the guests.

On someevenings the staff would attempt to close the bar at 10pm, other evenings they stayed open til midnight, max. As we were a group of approx 50 people, both young and old, 10pm is an unbelievably early time to expect people to retire to their rooms. Also, on one particular evening while we had a pre-dinner drink on the terrace, waiting for a coach to collect us to bring us to a restaurant, we were approached by a waiter and told that we would have to vacate the terrace area as it was reserved for a function. Luckily we were leaving in the next ten minutes, but this highlighted to us that we would have had to move somewhere else to accommodate a party who were not even residents.

The hotel has a beautiful private beach but there are 72 big steps down to it. Not a pleasant prospect for elderly people as there was no lift down. There were canoes and pedalos in a storage area but the man who looked after them charged guests who were not Italian for some reason. Another reason to feel unwelcome.

If you are staying in this hotel, try to minimise your stay as much as possible, as when the days go on you will realise that there is nothing to do there, no facilities, no decent restaurants nearby and most of all ,you are being ripped off.

I have to admit that I did not air any of these issues at the time as I did not want to put anyone to any trouble or embarrass anyone as this was a very special time for my friends. However, I do not think I am alone with my complaints.

This is the first time I have ever written a review as I have never felt the need. But this hotel was such a rip off , I felt that people should know what to expect before they are fleeced and stuck in a hotel in a town that has nothing to offer. It is not a place for tourists.

I stayed at the Grande Albergo Miramare for a week in June, it was my wedding. It is a beautiful hotel, I thought the staff where great, very friendly although not a lot of them could speak english but it wasnt a problem. Yes I agree with one of the reviews that the steps to the beach are far to many for old people, even the pool is a good few steps down. There are beautiful gardens and seating areas around the hotel for older people. The town is basic, there are some lovely restuarants and a couple of fun bars, try the budda bar only 10 minutes walk into the old town, it will stay open as long as you want, the hotel bar closes early and is expensive as are most hotel bars.
Over all it is a beautiful old italian hotel, if it is an Irish wedding your going to then you will have a great time anyway with the added plus of beautiful weather and a fab view.

On a long journey from Napoli to Tuscany, we decided to take a driving break. We were just begining to get a little concerned about finding a 'decent' hotel when we passed the rather nice looking gardens of this hotel.

The team at reception gave us a nice little breakfast included deal at a around 110 euros (its low season a month sooner here, due to the vast majority of business from the italian crowd).

As we checked in after dusk, the view when we pulled back the curtains the next morning was a great suprise - nice gardens, clear water etc - you get the picture.

The hotel is clearly used by the business conference crowd at this time of year - so you have to put up with the mobile pronto's - however once they are safely tucked away in their meeting room - you have both breakfast and the beach to yourself.

The rooms are nice, all with decent outside balcony. Breakfast was fine once you determine that you have to ask for many of the items like hot food.

You probably need motor transport to get around and it is a little out of the way. We found this simple hotel a nice break from the international focus of most hotels. It does what it says on the tin - for a decent price - especially in September.
