Last week my wife, three children, and I spent a few nights in L'Aquila so that we could explore Assergi where my wife's family is from. What better place to spend these nights than Magione Papale! It was elegant, highly accommodating, and charming! Our relatives told us it was once a mill. The building was beautiful, the restaurant was excellent and the service was superb! It was a perfect way to visit this region that was sadly ravaged by the earthquake a few years back. I'll go there again someday!

We booked this hotel for its location just outside L'Aquila for convenience of parking out of the city centre and because it was a Relais chain hotel. The hotel was fine with its facilities and location etc but the details didn't really come up to our expectations.

The room was fine but we soon discovered that some of the lighting and power points didn't work and after a visit from the onsite receptionist we discovered that one of the electrical trip switches was down - this should have been checked before our arrival. It took quite a while to connect to the hotel's wifi but we eventually succeeded to then also discover the main light in the bathroom was probably only about 15 watts and very dim, so much so that we had to use our mobile phone torches to see what we were doing in there! Not a good start.

The food in the dining room was as good as we had expected it to be from the website but the ambience was distinctly lacking as so few people were checked in and we never ate dinner in the same location - once in the small dining room, once in the banqueting hall as there was a private party in the dining room and once in the breakfast room on our own as there was a wedding in the banqueting hall and in the dining room. We felt very secondary to other events being staged in the hotel and rather pushed around to suit other bookings. Breakfast was fairly acceptable and fulfilled our needs.

Overall we were disappointed with our stay at the hotel, although the room was serviced daily the level of service could have been better and more welcoming and we did really feel somewhat neglected in favour of other group bookings and a wedding party. A lesson to be learned here is to perhaps enquire upon booking whether there is a wedding going on during your stay and perhaps then choose another hotel?

Our arrival didn't start off well as they were stopping up for us as our flight didn't land until 10pm in Ancona. We should have been there at 12pm however the A14 was closed 10 minutes away from the hotel, we had a 1.30 hours detour across the mountain. The hotel was lovely and waited up for us. We were every appreciated.
They served you breakfast in the morning if you told them what you wanted due to COVID. There was enough choice. We did ask for a sandwich one lunch time and wow, it could feed a family of four, great for our walk in the mountains the next day.
The rooms were large but basic with a stocked bar fridge and kettle with tea and coffee, however we did have to ask for this and milk.
We did go to the hotel pool which was more like a pond. We wasn't amused to find a black labrador dog swimming in there though! So I wasn't due to dog hairs everywhere. The gardens were very tranquil especially if you wanted to chill for an hour or two next to the pool.

Firstly the area has little to offer. L'Aquila is a bit like a ghost town and little has been done since the earthquake. We chose this hotel for 2 nights in between Rome and Ravello to relax for a while. It was a struggle to find it but eventually we did. It is like an oasis in the middle of a run down area. The hotel looked nice to start with. Our room was okay, although it overlooked the car park. We decided to eat there that evening but the main Michelin starred restaurant was closed to us as there was a wedding going on. The bar was also closed for the same reason. We were able to have a meal but we were put in an uninspiring side room to eat. Next day our breakfast was also served in this side room which seemed strange. We went outside to find them setting up for another wedding! This meant that we would not be able to use the sun deck, outside pool or all the facilities yet again. I spoke to the manager and said that we were not happy about this, he mumbled an excuse, shrugged his shoulders and walked away. We were dismissed! At this point we decided to cancel the second night and we moved on. I have no hesitation in saying avoid this hotel if you are after service and attention to your needs.

Good evening , We apologize for the delay with we respond. We are sorry for the misunderstanding created during your stay at our relais, because be able to satisfy to the expectations of our customers is our target. During the summer the restaurant is often busy with weddings and events that reduce the availability of both restaurants, we try as best as possible to avoid proposing a dining alternative and we regret that this service was not welcome to you. The pool and terrace are common spaces for hotel and restaurant guests so it is difficult to create two different areas in the external environment. Thank you anyway for your precious review helpful considering the criticism that give us a further boost for reflection and improvement.

This is excellent hotel with perfect service and michelin star restaurant. We stayed 2 nights there and enjoyed the facilities. The rooms are comfortable and fancy. Service people are very friendly and nice. We had also both dinners in the restaurants as the city is quite devastated after earthquake. Recommended stay in this area is 1 night - you will not see much as most of the buildings are still under construction in LAquila

Very modern facilities in a nicely renovated building this hotel had a touch of class about it.
Staff were very helpful, the breakfasts good and the waiting staff for dinners were excellent.
We had a car so had no problems but without a car the location is too far out of town. Otherwise happy to recommend it to others.

Our son married his Italian wife here in June,2013.
About 20 UK guests and family also stayed here for 2 nights.
The unanimous verdict for the hotel was that it was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful.
The wedding was fabulous. The wedding couple had arranged a unique day including an outdoor ceremony which, apparently, is rare in Italy and therefore was disapproved of by other hotels that they visited. The hotel staff listened to the requests and delivered perfectly. Everyone agreed that the food and drink was superb. The staff were highly efficient, balancing informality and formality, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
The jazz band was ideal for the cross section of guests.
One specific advantage of Magione Papale is its setting. The expansive lawn has a children's playground and a shallow pool. This enabled the many children at the wedding to occupy themselves all day within easy view of the adults.
The hotel is in a valley with backdrops of Colle Maggio Church, mountains, trees and, oddly enough, a very active birdlife!
Some guests wanted to visit the city and were given precise instructions how to walk there through a botanic garden.
Our son and daughter in law chose a superb venue in her home city less than 2 hours by bus from Rome's airports.
A day to remember.
Thank you Magione Paple.

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and the staff. Everything was immaculately clean and well maintained. The staff spoke English very well, the rooms were wonderful, and the food was amazing. This will certainly be our go-to hotel when returning to l'aquila. The free wi-fi was a huge bonus as we were here for business as well as to visit family. The desk staff helped out with printing and other business necessities. Our children loved to swim in the pool which was very nice and clean. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was outstanding and worth a visit even if you do not intend to stay here. They also offer horseback riding and are very close to everything worth doing in the city. I would not hesitate to stay here in the future or to recommend this hotel to other members of our family when traveling from the states to l'aquila.
