We booked this hotel after reading the reviews and were delighted to find ourselves in such an amazingly different, small hotel - the hotel is quaint, our room had a very high ceiling and a covered terrace, very chintzy which all fits into the ambiance of this small boutique Italian hotel.

We booked on Booking.com and stayed for two nights including dinner which was served on a terrace that hangs over the side of the hotel - all very atmospherical. If you were celebrating in a special location, then the hotel would certainly fit the bill. The dinners were outstanding, beautifully presented, every course a picture in itself, the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast is taken on a side terrace that also has views looking down to Lake Varese.

We drove ourself to the hotel, we missed the rather small brown 'heritage' sign for 'Sacro Monte' (which is where the hotel is located), if you are planning to visit keep and eye out for the Sacro Monte sign and you will find it. There is also a bus service too.

The hotel has parking, the roads are tight, our hire car was small so we managed to navigate the winding road that takes you up to the hotel.

Whilst it may appear on first arrival that there isn't a lot to see, there is the amazing site of the Sacro Monte and there are also a few restaurants tucked away too.

Recommended for anyone that wants to get away from the crowds and enjoy excellent food!

We stayed here for a night before our morning flight out of Milan airport. We had requested for a single floor room as we had a baby with us and they had also provided a pack and play cot for the baby. The views are just breathtaking. Room and bathroom were clean but the best part was the hospitality from Silvio’s mother. She didn’t speak much English but was so kind and good to us, even making sure breakfast was ready for our early departure. The breakfast was just the perfect end to out Italy escapade and the Apple cake alone is the reason we will be back! The restaurant was closed the night we stayed so the board portion of our stay was applicable at the sister hotel just a stone’s throw from the hotel. The meal was fantastic, the views equally spectacular and service just fantastic.

Fantastic hotel with ten rooms with a view over the whole of Varese and the surrounding area. Let the hotel host Silvio cook for you as it is a great experience. He has full control over allergens and buys all the food himself at the city's market. Unique hotel with soul and staff that help you with everything. The rooms are clean and you get fantastic views from your sheltered balcony.

Beautiful hotel with a spectacular view. Very friendly owner/chef Silvio who looked after us very well and provided a brilliant 5 course tasting menu on our second day. Excellent hotel. The en suite bathroom is up a flight of stairs so not for limited mobility guests.

We have stayed At Hotel Colonne several times. Always in September or October. It is the most hospital and friendly hotel we have stayed at, and we always want to return. The village is calm, genuine and beautiful, with many possibilities of hiking in the surroundings. And the hotell with the wonderful chef and host Silvio Battistoni provides wonderful food, a breathtaking view and the kind of relaxing atmosphere one can usually just dream of.

End of May. After all the lockdowns and restrictions we needed a break. Italy is always very attractive and now that we 'discovered' this jewel of a small hotel (10 rooms) up on the Sacro Monte di Varese with its splendid view, we are anew enchanted by the regions beauty. A warm welcome, a comfortable room with a terrace, and of course the very delicious cuisine of Silvio Battistoni and a good wine selection made the 3 day stay truly wonderful.
We hiked up to the once-luxurious, now abandoned Liberty Style Hotel Grande del Campo Fiore one morning and used public transport (30 min) to visit Varese the next day.
All VERY much recommended

The location of this hotel is very special, being on the Sacro Monte UNESCO site. Our spacious room and lovely large balcony overlooked the town of Varese, its lake and beyond. The little medieval 'town' with it's narrow cobbled streets and the 14 chapels winding down the hill, is a real escape from it all. The breakfasts were lovely, the staff very friendly and the dinners were cooked by an extremely accomplished chef who was often around and had good English. We were on a half board deal with Secret Escapes which included a tasting menu on one night and we treated ourselves to the a la carte menu on another night. About an hour's drive to Lake Como and 40 minutes to Lake Maggiore.

The hotel is located in the village of Santa Maria del Monte in Varese. It is right next to the funculator which is handy if not driving. We drove and they provided free parking. The hotel itself was beautiful. The food in their restaurant was very good, it was a little pricey but comparable for the quality. Their pasta dishes were 14€ which is quite reasonable and if you stay they were offering a deal for 30€ of an appetizer and main that I did not read until after dinner, unfortunately no one mentioned it to us.

The breakfast was good and fresh, served in a beautiful breakfast room. I felt it was overpriced at 14€ each, which is what we were charged for the kid's breakfasts. I had booked a triple room but there was some confusion (I used a 3rd party site) when we showed up as they were expecting 2 adults rather than 2 adults and 2 children. The gentleman checking us in seemed rather upset and I was worried if we would have a place to stay, even though I offered to pay a supplement. The matrona (Elderly female owner) seemed to have no problem as my children are small and even offered a crib for my son. She was very kind, friendly and accommodating for our stay. The room was large, more than enough space for us and it had a balcony with a great view. A very pretty, quaint room.

We walked up to the church in the morning through the tiny cobblestoned roads, it is an amazing setting and it was a great accompaniment to our stay.

It's challenging booking for four when traveling Europe and I was disappointed with our check-in but I am sure there are policies about how many people can stay in room. The problem is when your children are young you need to have some flexibility as they are not old enough to be in their own room. In the end we were pleased with our stay and we would recommend it to friends, it was well worth the journey to the top of the hill. Very pleasant stay, would have been 5 stars but for the check-in, I almost rated it three but that would be unfair as the female owner was lovely and the place was excellent.

What can I say....I’m in love with Italy. My partner bought a long weekend holiday package to celebrate my birthday. When we arrived at this hotel, it was raining, so we could not see all beauty of the hotel’s surroundings. After unpacking our bags, we headed to a bar where we met a lovely guy Philip who served us the drinks and had a long chat with us. As a part of our holiday package we were entitled for one special dinner of 6 dishes prepared by Silvio Battistoni. So we had it at the first evening of our arrival. Our dinner was beautiful. My partner described a carpaccio dish as a piece of culinary art. With regards to the drinks, the restaurant didn’t meet our expectations. We thought we were going to have a wine flight with our special meal but it didn’t happen and we had to choose a bottle of wine by ourselves. Never mind.
I have to mention that a coffee made by the lovely lady Vanna in the mornings was one of the best we had during that long weekend in Italy.
Being in such a great place, it’s easy to discover the Sacro Monte di Varese, visit a few art galleries in Varese, explore the lakes Maggiorre and Orta. Enjoy!

Positive: This hotel has a great view and each room a very nice terrasse. We really felt bad for this family that runs this small hotel, because at the end of the day, we could see that they made their best to make us confortable. But in such an amateur way and too many bad ingredients unfortunately.

Negative: The toilet of the room was wrapped with a "desinfected for you" paper ribbon, but not cleaned (dry urine everywhere) yeurk! (Later the hotel owner, who is also the cook at the restaurant, apologized for the dirty bathroom, but that's it, no drink offered, nothing.

Other than this small accident the hotel room itself was ok, but the hotel description does not say that the bathroom is on a different floor and accessible through some very steep stairs. And it was so cold everywhere in this hotel (except in the restaurant), although the heating was set at the maximum. We felt cold in the hotel, in the room itself. Also, the food got us sick. Stay away from the food they serve!! The butter at the breakfast smelled like blue cheese and the evening before we ate at the restaurant downstairs, we went for a "discovery" menu, well, let's say that it was not to our taste at all. The only good dish was the one we tortelinis. They believe to serve you "nouvelle cuisine", but raw St-Jaques shell sliced with some vegetable powder (that smelled like food for fish) or the 0.5 dl lukewarm asian soup... we were not impressed and eating at the restaurant made our final bill 3x bigger as the night itself. (although we asked, we could not see the restaurant bill before the check out!! No signature, nothing! We were asked to check the restaurant bill at the check out only!)
Also, do not use their electrical sockets! Our camera charger burnt in the room after 10 minutes plugged.
So all in all, we felt really not well upon leaving this hotel (when you are cold and you cannot rely on food or drink to feel warmer)

Dear client, We are surprised at your bad review especially for the fact that you posted on both our sections of our hotel and restaurant. The title as well as the nature of your review demonstrates that you didn't appreciate the style or the affection that my family make available for our guests, as we like to treat our guests as our friends. I believe that the many positive reviews we receive from all around the world make up as a response to your comments against us.

Yes. A bus will take you to the train station of Varese and from there you can catch a bus going there. (To village of Santa Maria Del Monte). Be aware that it will take you some time to go up and down the mountain. For best advice just contact Hotel Colonne.
