This is a must visit (book in advance) for an amazing lunch. Wonderful home grown and cooked food, a wonderfully peaceful and scenic setting and Lance let's me land the helicopter on the lawn - perfect all round!

Lance and Mary go out of the way to make you feel like your stay is special. The food is delicious and always fresh produce, often local. We stayed an extra night as part of a biking tour and were so pleased we did. Rooms are large and functional with a spa pool in each wing. The bar and dinner/breakfast...

This was the second year in a row our group stayed at OitS. Last year for just one night. But we were so impressed with the location, the roads and the food that we came back for a 4 day stay this year. We used OitS as a base for our cycle training (road race). The area is ribboned with...

Plenty of pressure in the shower and the little spa pool was a real treat after a hard day riding the Waikato Cycle Trails....

My wife and I have had three stays at Out in the Styx, usually with other members of her family. The fact that we have made return visits says it all. The rooms are very comfortable, fantastic views, hosts Lance and Mary make you feel very welcome. Lance has lots of good stories up his sleeve to tell over dinner...

An outstanding location, at the foot of Sanctuary Mountain, and absolutely first-rate hospitality from Lance and Mary. Be sure to have dinner here—delicious. And besides visiting Maungatautari, ask about night-time kayaking to see the glow worms at a nearby tree-covered river. A top-notch stay, and I will be returning soon.

This is a first rate place to stay. The location is fantastic as it is just in the shadow of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, a mere 10 minute walk away. The rooms are spacious and well designed. The food is out of this world! Fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients are transformed into heavenly nosh by Mary. There is no menu-...

This is a wonderful place to stay while exploring Maungatautari and the region. Dinner bed and breakfast. Great food and very comfortable accommodation. The hosts, Lance and Mary are so friendly and welcoming. Mary is a fabulous cook as is their son Nolan. A perfect place for a group or family gathering. We loved it and will return!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our family have been living here and operating as a restaurant and guesthouse for over 20 years. We don't have a menu but our guests are always satisfied with the delicious meals we prepare and the gorgeous setting. We are very fortunate to look directly up at the the forested mountains within the Maungatautari Ecological Island, a 3500 hectare pest free scenic reserve. We operate a drop-off service for hikers walking the traverse and our van can take up to 8 cycles for drop off and pickups on the Waikato River Trail. We are between Rotorua and Waitomo and our rates include a four course dinner and a two course breakfast. ... more   less
