This is a wonderful place to stay while exploring Maungatautari and the region. Dinner bed and breakfast. Great food and very comfortable accommodation. The hosts, Lance and Mary are so friendly and welcoming. Mary is a fabulous cook as is their son Nolan. A perfect place for a group or family gathering. We loved it and will return!

What a friendly place with great views of the NZ rolling green hills. It's very peaceful and warm. The rooms are simple but very clean and functional. The food was delicious and they accommodated my vegetarian needs. If I can change one thing I will have Internet in the rooms.

The lodge is beatiful but the food is absolutely stunning. We went for a track over the mountain which was a good worth. But the thing which made this place was the meal. I would honestly just stop here for a night to have another meal here. Top pick, need to stop here!

Our group of nine stayed at Out in the Styx in mid November. Lance and Mary were very accommodating and four of our group parked our camper vans overnight. The rest stayed in the comfortable ensuite rooms and we also had use of the lounge room and spa pool. Lance drove our group to the northern end of the Maungatautari...

Out in the Styx Guest House is as the name suggests "out in the sticks" - ~21/2 hours from Auckland, and about 45 minutes from Hamilton. It is a family business with great hospitality and abundance of home cooked yummy food. I travelled with 5 friends and our prime purpose for our stay was to trek the Waikato River Trails....

We visited this gorgeous location for a friend's birthday party and had a wonderful time. The location is beautiful with pretty gardens and stunning views. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The dinner and breakfast foods were delicious with lots of healthy fruit and vegetables. The staff are so helpful and friendly.

What a superb lodge. I wasn't sure what to expect but from meeting Lance and he remembered my name the entire weekend (impressive when there were about 30 of us), to the first meal I was sold. This was going to be a very comfortable stay. I was staying in a dorm room with share bathroom. The bathrooms were so...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our family have been living here and operating as a restaurant and guesthouse for over 20 years. We don't have a menu but our guests are always satisfied with the delicious meals we prepare and the gorgeous setting. We are very fortunate to look directly up at the the forested mountains within the Maungatautari Ecological Island, a 3500 hectare pest free scenic reserve. We operate a drop-off service for hikers walking the traverse and our van can take up to 8 cycles for drop off and pickups on the Waikato River Trail. We are between Rotorua and Waitomo and our rates include a four course dinner and a two course breakfast. ... more   less
