This hotel overlooking Sarlat was a perfect base to explore the Dordogne. Lovely stone building having a good sized swimming pool with walnut orchard next door, modern and clean rooms with AC and kettle. WiFi was a bit slow. Breakfast varied each day with fresh fruit, cheese, charcuterie and something home-cooked like muffin or pancake. The 12 min walk up the hill didn’t bother us. Overall a very quiet, relaxed and comfortable stay.

Just returned from a 6 night stay at this lovely hotel.
It's very peaceful and less than a 10 minute walk into Sarlat - which is gorgeous ( about 15 minutes back up hill).
Pool area very nice and refreshing , especially at a time of over 40 degree heatwave!
Room was clean and ample with very good air conditioning - thankfully. A stocked fridge and welcome pack were nice touches.
We had breakfast most mornings which was very nice.
Our host Christine was a star and was always available for a chat and to offer advice on where to visit or restaurants to eat.
Would certainly recommend this hotel.

Just stayed 3 nights at Bon Encontre - couldn’t be better.
Lovely clean room with super en-suite shower room. Lovely pool area too.
The breakfast is exceptional.
Christine, the proprietor speaks good English and happily made an early breakfast (6.30am)for my husband and his friend who were going to an Archery competition on two of the mornings.
There is a mini bar in the room and a lockable safe.
We had appertains at the hotel before walking into Sarlat for dinner. The walk is downhill on the way out, but quite steep uphill to get back, although ok for us.
Sarlat is definitely worth visiting. The Saturday am market is huge.
The restaurants are very reasonable, and the food is mostly very good.

Although the rooms are clean, bright, and spacious, such a relief after the couple of dark and small rooms we had experienced earlier in our trip, the real gem here is the owner, Christine.

We arrived at 1pm and our room was ready! Christine, the owner, was very very helpful with great suggestions as to our proposed itinerary. She even found and made dinner reservations for us at an excellent restaurant downtown on a busy holiday night.

People have talked about the walk up the hill and it might be an issue if you have mobility problems, but we found it refreshing after dinner and a nice quiet way to return from the busy market on Saturday morning.

Positives

- Light, bright, attractive interior
- Atmospheric exterior
- Ample, easy parking
- Very clean
- Newer pool area
- Pleasant patio seating with peek views and pleasant surroundings
- Friendly, helpful reception
- Good location just away from town in a quiet neighborhood, but easy drive to center
- Great coffee!
- I botched my reservation (picked the wrong night and arrived without a room!) and reception sprang into action to help me square it away
- Some help with sightseeing arrangements/answers

Negatives

- Smokers completely ruin the otherwise pleasant experience on the veranda; smoking should be banned on the property
- Some second-story rooms have odd sloping ceilings (like being in grandma's finished - but very nice - attic)
- Walking to the town center would be quite an effort; parking in town is for-pay and relatively pricey
- Not a lot of English spoken here, but fairly easy to get by
- Sightseeing assistance was only average
- Watch for signage to hotel; can be a bit tricky to find due to the one-way streets and tight corners

Bon Encontre is a wonderful Hotel. A reasonable 10-15 min walk downhill to Sarlat a bit steep coming back !! Great onsite parking. A fabulous pool area with plenty of sun loungers. A very tasty and plentiful breakfast. Spotlessly clean. Decent size rooms. But what makes Bon Encontre that extra bit special, is their amazing staff. There is nothing at all that is too much trouble for them and everything is done with such a lovely, happy smile. We had fresh flowers in our room and a little chocolate on the pillow. They really did add to the fabulous 5 days we spent there. Many Thanks from Kathi & Brian xx

This friendly and very restful hotel is atop a hill, a 2 min drive up from town. Its nice to be out of town actually and easy to drive down there and park and then walk. The service is wonderfully helpful and gave great restaurant recommendations.
The rooms were big and inviting and comfortable with nice shuttered windows and nice older wood furniture. The price is also right and they have parking. I recommend highly.

We don’t normally 3 a place, as we don’t normally read 3 reviews… nor do average places motivate us to write. But sometimes places aren’t great or horrible; and in some cities there are no excellent choices. In this case you have to pick between mixed bags, and we think Sarlat is one of those places.

If you are thinking of Sarlat, it is definitely worth seeing. Very exotic, fantastic scenery, a storybook village. Go for the city.

The problem with giving Hôtel Bon-Encontre a 3 is that in many respects it is excellent. The grounds are beautiful, the gardening is flawless, the building is very nicely situated on a hill, there’s plenty of parking, the maids are helpful, the bed was confortable. But there are too many things wrong, and it adds up to mixed experience.

First was the noise. The door bolts sound like gunshots, you can hear them turning from the parking lot. Beyond this, it seems there’s something about this building that amplifies footsteps, conversations, children playing, etc. Hard to know what the hotel can do about it (they have signs encouraging courteousness in the hallways), but it makes it hard to sleep.

Second was the rudeness. I’ll admit I normally ignore such negatives on TripAdvisor, as in the main people are nice if you are nice to them. And I don’t mean to suggest that the staff here are really mean. But, for example, when we were checking in (late evening) we walked up and talked for a moment and then the phone rang. The receptionist talked for 10 minutes while we just stood there. It took less than 1 minute to check us in, so how does this make any sense? Again, not a 1, but not a 5. Then again, on completing the check in we asked for a city map and she said that she only had three left, so we “could not have one.” Think about this; exactly who was she saving these three for, more important customers? She caught herself at the end and gave us one as we were walking away, but you get the idea. Not evil, just unconsciously rude.

It wasn’t particularly warm when we were there (70’s) but the rooms were hot. No air conditioning in our room, no screens on the windows, and no way for the air to flow anyway since there was only one window on one side. It was a bit like sleeping in a sauna; we woke up with wet sheets.

There were internet problems just when I had an important email to send, with no one to help. But in the morning the modem was reset and it worked fine from day two on.

There were painfully few electrical wall sockets in the room. To charge our stuff we had to pull out the nightstands and place the phones, etc. on the floor.

Finally was the distance to town. It is a bit too far at a mile and down (then up on the way back) a steep hill; a serious trek rather than a casual walk. Again, not horrible, but not good.

Sarlat is great. The nearby Marqueyssac gardens rate as one of the best sites in France. So come stay at Bon Encontre with low expectations and perhaps you’ll be delighted with some of the good things; like the gorgeous flower pots and view from the breezy verandah. Sometimes a 3 ain’t so bad.

Family of 4 with 2 teenage daughters we stayed here for 7 nights. A great homebase for exploring the Dordogne. Had room 4 with 4 twin beds. Very comfortable. Great sized bathroom with separate room for toilet. Wifi is good. Fridge which was so nice to keep drinks. A/C was a lifesaver this time of year. Christine is an angel and has tons of great advice all things Dordogne. And the pool, the pool! So wonderful AND there's a cooler with ice-cream and popsicles (for a fee) at your disposal.

We had breakfast each morning and it was delicious, especially Christine's homemade cakes. Breakfast included some salami, ham, cheeses, fruit, yogurts, breads, various pastries, juices, milk, coffee and tea.

Easy downhill walk to town, less than 10 minutes. Definitely uphill on the way back. I'm pretty fit and still did made it back in 10 minutes though. It is pretty steep, but totally doable.

Very good place with a pool, ( unheated ) on the outskirts of the city with free parking and WiFi. Nice rooms with large bathroom and very good shower. breakfast selection was quite good and they would cook you an omelette. Close walk or drive into Sarlat, and good recommendations for sights and villages given by the staff. The only negative was the mosquitos in the room , but it was the time of the year!,
