Detailed Reviews
We stayed here at very short notice on our way up France. A great find: beautiful building full of lovely things, and a very warm welcome from James and his family. They helped us navigate Saintes’ fierce pedestrianised zone and park the car in an underground parking. We will definitely be back to explore this grand town. And for the record, they have over 700 cookery books so we’ll make sure we eat here too next time!

This a an Oasis in the beautiful City Saintes. Monique, James and Armande are wonderful hosts. They created this beautiful hotel with so much love which you will experience during your stay. The rooms are authentic, clean and cosy. The breakfast they serve comes with homemade confiture, they use local and seasonal products. We are grateful for our 7 days here and to have met these lovely people. We will come back for sure. Fabian and Jenne

We stayed here for one night but wished it was longer.
The location is just perfect for exploring the area as you are in the heart of the town and yet it feels secluded and quiet. I wished we had stayed in better weather as the garden looked like a little oasis which I imagine is just perfect in the summer after exploring the town or having a morning coffee.
What I loved most about this accommodation was how the building itself has been lovingly taken care of, with its beautiful features intact and the house filled with quality antique furniture.
The room was beautifully presented, clean and very comfortable. We all had a great sleep as it was very quiet and comfortable bedding.
The hosts were so helpful and warm it really made for a lovely relaxing environment. You can tell they have a passion for hosting and want people to experience the best their home town has to offer which was really nice.
I would highly recommend a stay here especially if you want the personal touch of staying with local people rather than an impersonal hotel experience.
Thank you for our stay.

Charming stop on our holiday route. Warm welcome in a beautiful 16th century house.
Spacious room, nice bathroom.
An atypical, pleasant and comfortable bed and breakfast welcome. We all slept well, the children enjoyed the puzzles and the history book available.
Homemade jams at breakfast, nice garden 🪴.
Good value for money for our family of 4 people.
Proximity downtown and market.
We will gladly return.

Having looked at the reviews and photo's on the various websites I have to say that we were very disappointed when we arrived at this property, which was the worst stay in our 2 week road trip. The lovely old house is in desperate need of a clean and some tlc. It is not French shabby chic, just untidy and full of clutter. The bed was comfortable and room clean but being on the 2nd floor with poor lighting on the stairs it would be a challenge for those less able to get to.Breakfast was very basic and we paid less in other places that where much better.

Dear Lesley As we responded to your comments on the Booking.com web site see copy below . We are really sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us, we are perplexed on the cause of your comments, we gratefully received your 4 dogs when 2 were announced, We responded to your messages informing you the rooms were on the second floor, we received you with a free welcome bottle of wine, we did not complain when you brought your 4 dogs to the dining room and did not propose to take them to our garden when one of the other guest obviously showed fear of animals I would like to add that there is plenty of light in our staircase and hallway and that our private collection of antiques is very dear to us . I suggest that you show good will and consideration when you are received as graciously as you were by 3 people James Armande and myself who take pride and pleasure in receiving nice people and sharing our love of the region its art and beauty, your comments makes us very sad, copy of Booking.com response: "We are mystified ourselves by your comments, I do not know what we did or didn't do to warrant them. All I can say is we are very sorry you did not appreciate your stay with us in spite of the fact that we try very hard to make every body comfortable. Maybe you did not realise that we are a bed and breakfast and that we receive you in our home where we like to exhibit and share our antique collection, this is a private home from the sixteenth century classified and as many others in Saintes it would not be desirable nor possible to install a lift. We would like to add that your description of our breakfast is inaccurate, we serve freshly squeezed organic orange juice, 3 types of bread minimum fresh and toasted, croissants, 3 types of preserved home made, cantal cheese yogurt and cereals are proposed and on request we serve eggs even though a free continental breakfast is announced on booking i really think we go the extra mile . I would suggest that next time you visit our region you choose an hotel that would graciously accept 4 large size dogs free of charge and welcome you with a free bottle of local white wine." Remove

Although the photos show a gorgeous room...(and it was very well decorated and renovated) the photos dont show that there was clutter strewn up the stairs, no parking and no way of locking the door to your room and also in the room that we had, there was no bathroom/toilet wall or door..just a glass screen with gaps all around it so if you like sitting on the toilet with virtually no privacy this is the place for you. No tv or coffee making facilities in the room and breakfast/polite chit chat had to be shared with another couple on the only table.
Disappointing and overpriced...

We stayed in La Port Rouge for one night in early April 2015. The property is very conveniently located that one could walk to restaurants, bars, shops, main street etc in Saintes, yet it is tucked away in a beautiful and quiet street. The hostess is very friendly (love their dog!) and the interior is quirky (I understand she is an artist!) and homely, a lot of charming characters. Bedroom was nicely designed and bed is very comfortable.
Breakfast was lovely, love their baguette and home made jam. Well done La Porte Rouge, we will definitely consider you first when we are back in Saintes!

This was a great find. It's a B&B with 4 rooms on the 3rd level of a charming, well position stately home. The owners spoke perfect English, (husband from USA) and looked after us with great care considering we had 3 very young children.
The room was huge and featured a fabulous bathroom with claw foot bath.
Breakfast was lovely with excellent espresso coffee topped up regularly.
Don't expect a super clean minimalist entrance foyer though. This is a family home with artists amongst the fold. Expect paintings and empty frames and assorted clutter plus the family dog to greet you in the hallways. All part of the charm as far as we were concerned! A great stay.

It is not easy to find a nice place in Saintes, but the first contact with the owner of la Porte rouge made me think that I finally found the right place!
The owners are indeed very friendly and the location is perfect. Secured parking is available and very handy. But the dirt, the mess all over the house, the spider webs and the lack of heating in the room and in the bathroom are not acceptable. Specially for the price you are paying for just a B&B!

Overnighted in Saintes in November 2012 - La Porte Rouge is charming. Staying in a beautiful 16th century charente house in the pedestrian part of the old town of Saintes was a real pleasure. The car was safely parked by the Cathedral some three minutes way where there is plenty of parking. The hosts were very welcoming and pleasant, and very helpful with directions and suggestions for a restaurant. Slept like a log in a very comfortable bed in a proper room - just as visitors to Poitou-Charente had done over the centuries before the arrival of chain hotels. It was a great find and really enhanced my visit to this ancient Roman town.
