Alas, perfection was not there and for good reason this big downside concerning the SPA Sauna Hammam relaxation area.
The RELAIS CHATEAUX site relays advertising for this establishment, which informs us that this space is reserved for hotel guests. However, we noted that it was open to the general public through the purchase of a day PASS. We suffered inconveniences, particularly on a rainy day when outdoor activities for the children were cancelled. The sauna has become a children's attraction.
Furthermore, the cold shower (necessary after a sauna) was out of order, which had the effect of transforming the hammam area (which has a jet of cold water) into a shower room.
Maybe you will still find the cup that fell on the side of the sauna heater and never picked up during our entire stay!
The promised relaxation and relaxation were therefore not delivered and this is truly regrettable for a Relais et Chateaux!

The +++++:
- the breakfast buffet, splendid, varied with high quality products. The gluten-free bread is really excellent, which is rare (often the gluten-free bread is industrial and really of poor quality)
- dinner: top service and the dishes are very good and the kitchen staff adapts to dietary restrictions brilliantly
- the Spa and the swimming pool - very good massage, excellent welcome
- the rooms are tastefully decorated in a mountain style - evening service also (which is becoming rare)
In short, faultless for this charming and delicious hotel. We will come back next summer.

- location in heart of la Clusaz, steps away from the main square, restaurants and 2 ski lifts.
- ski location on hand + locker.
- very friendly & helpful staff.
The less good/bad:
- overly expensive for drinks and dinner. EUR12+ for a glass of wine at the bar, and dinner for 2 at EUR200, for 2 starters, raclette & wine is too expensive relative to the town and location, even for a 5* establishment. We were expecting to pay more, but we could have had the same meal & quality in a local restaurant for half the price which left a bitter taste. (we dined at the bistro not the michelin restaurant which had no availability).
- breakfast was disappointing, a good selection of cheeses and breads, but we would have expected at least a small a la carte selection available for order, but it was all buffet, even the hot food.
- 1700 check-in time (!). This is the latest check-in time I have come across in all my travels. Luckily our room was not occupied so we were able to have it as from 1400, otherwise we find 1700 excessively late, especially if you have arrived earlier, done some skiing, with kids and family, and need to hang around for hours waiting for the room to finally be ready. Furthermore, checkout is 12:00, so the hotel considers 5 hours to turn around which is unheard of.
- towel racks in the room did not warm up (we had 2 bathrooms and in neither, and we could not find any switch), which is not acceptable for a hotel in a ski area and with a spa.
- we called reception for water one morning in order to take daily medication, and nobody bothered to arrive.
- spa was disappointing - the pool area is dark, there is limited lounger chairs, and the water in the pool is not 30 heated as advertised, in fact we found it quite cold. In addition, there were 7-8 small kids jumping around, diving, splashing, and make it unusable for other guests, with parents not reacting and no rules around the pool or supervision from staff, so this facility for us was completely unusable.
All in all, this hotel tries too hard to be a 5* establishment, but ultimately comes short, especially in the location it is. It charges 5* prices, which we were more than happy to experience, but it then falls short in fully justifying them, leaving a disappointing feeling of being short-changed.
Positives
The hotel accommodated numerous changes of dates for our booking because of Covid. The on site parking (payable) is handy. The on site ski shop is handy and the guys in there super helpful and friendly. Our daily bedroom cleaning was superb and a young waiter at breakfast always brought us hot drinks. (The first few days there was no service at breakfast at all).
Disappointing
No welcome, no introduction to the hotel, facilities, how things worked etc.
After out first nights dinner in the restaurant where we were served cold and nearly raw potato’s, and a run in with the Manager over it, we just decided it was easier to eat out every other night for half the price, and friendly service.
The second night we tried for early evening drinks before we headed out. After waiting 30 mins for service, my husband approached the bar where the barman proceeded to shout at him and threw our glasses into the sink.
Inclusive breakfast only includes scrambled eggs, any other type of eggs are chargeable. Our room rate really did not reflect a need for ‘chargeable’ breakfast items, doing so was just silly.
Our room was tired, part of the floor was nailed down where it had risen. Wardrobe space was challenging and no toilet in our en-suite bathroom was annoying. Both showers soaked the floor when used, and the shower over the bath just meant it was difficult to use. The condition of the room and the furniture in it did not reflect the room rate, nor a 5 star hotel.
Generally service was non existent or slow. No clear management or ownership around either monitoring staff or ensuring guests are being looked after.
Save your pennies and book somewhere smaller that is family run, produces great food and has welcoming staff, even if you have to walk a few minutes. We enjoyed eating at Hotel Christiania (Lunch special menu is great value too), L’Outa, and Chez Moi.
Upon checking out and settling up for a weeks accommodation for a family of four there wasn’t even a thank you : ( that about sums our stay up!

Superb location in the heart of the village (hence the name of course!) and very near the main lifts
Welcome from the team was excellent.
Rooms were generally very good, with a couple of smaller exceptions I would say for the price.
Breakfasts were nice but I should say that the hot breakfasts were cold on all 4 days despite telling the manager he needed to turn up the hotplates. Apart from that the rest of the breakfast was lovely and beautifully presented. You do have to fend for yourself though which was a little surprising for a Relais & Chateau hotel..
The Spa was nice although perhaps not quite up to the standard one might expect of this type of hotel and for the money. Clean and everything worked though.
The bar was rather soulless we found, and in somewhat of an open hallway which didn't make for the best experience. We only used it once for this reason.
We ate in the restaurant (downstairs) on one night, and boy are we glad. It was a disaster, such that we only had one course and left. They insisted we had a set menu which only gave us 2 options per course and it wasn't cheap. We asked to be given the A La Carte menus as per all other guests and after a biggish battle they agreed. The food was not great, and very expensive. The wine came late and some after the meal had ended so we returned it (they said sorry but they had forgotten..). The A La Carte menus came out for desert but were quickly collected again and the set menus delivered. Again we had a battle to request the fuller menus which eventually after a great deal of hassle they agreed, but on balance we had seen enough and left.
I met with the manager the next day to share our experience which he was mortified about. He did say that parties of 14 would normally only be offered a set menu but they had never told us this prior to booking. I offered him the chance to in some way compensate us but sadly for them they did not.
We would never eat here again as the food and service around the village was REALLY great compared to this experience. What a huge shame as they could have handled this so much better, or even apologised and given us something to show they really cared.
I am not convinced this hotel should have the R & C badge on the door given our very disappointing experience. We have stayed at many R & C hotels and this sadly doesn't come close. The facilities were good, and the staff excellent, but..
