My family and I stayed at the Kolbergarten for about 9 nights making it our base for exploring Bavaria. Bad Toelz is the best location for exploring Bavaria as it is so central to all the sights and the Kolbergarten is the best hotel to make your base.

The reception was warm and welcoming and you know from the heavy front door and timbered hallway that you have found a very traditional Bavarian hotel. the hotel is beautifully decorated and smells of heaven with aromas of Frankincense.

Rooms are generous, well appointed and very clean. Toiletries are luxurious and replenished daily. The beds are large (rare for Europe) and the duvets are heavy and warm.

Breakfast is traditional Continental with exquisite cheeses, exotic cold meats and make sure you have the delicious homemade bircher muesli. The hotel no longer caters for lunch or evening meals but it is central to all the places to eat in town.

The staff (a family business) are wonderful, friendly and will go out of their way to help you with whatever you require. For the best stay and traditional experience in Bavaria, the Kolbergarten cannot come more highly recommended.

The owner is a very welcoming and great person. I like typically styled pensions and this is one of a king. Rooms are quite big with a balcony. Nice location in a quiet part of Bad Tolz but still just a few steps from the old city centre. Price / quality is great. Just the breakfast could be better.

I love old pensions and small hotels like this one. They remind me of the places I stayed in when travelling with my parents in Europe in the 1960's. This particular hotel has that same magic, perhaps because the floors haven't been refinished since at least those days. It is a well-worn old gem with a few quirks, but I'm happy to have had the experience of staying there.

To begin with, it took me a lot of effort to get a room booked here. They seem to be technology-challenged, even when using their own on-line booking system. I finally had to just call them to get the details confirmed, but the only person who speaks English is only available a few hours a day. I speak a little German, but in this part of Bavaria the dialect is so thick that even other Germans can't understand them, so an English-speaking person was necessary.

We tried to check in at 1:00 on a Sunday and no one was in and the hotel was locked up tight. The check-tin time was posted as starting at 2:00, so we ate lunch and came back around 2:30 where it still took many rings of the bell before an older man stumbled out to let us in, apparently just woken up from a nap. He did not speak English and did not try to speak slow enough for us to follow. He gave use several keys and indicated that we could choose our own room. It did not look like there were more than one or two other rooms being occupied. We chose the largest room on the corner facing the front of the hotel and the river since the other large rooms over-looked a parking lot. The furniture was worn, but old and charming. The floors were in need of refinishing and the bathroom was last remodeled around 1970 or so. Still, it was a solid room that felt "authentic".

The next morning we were the only ones in the breakfast room except for the older man and someone who seemed to be either his grandson or a workman. Neither spoke English, or spoke slowly enough to be understood. However, as we finished eating the manager, Frau. Stroetz, arrived and her infectious cheerfulness and charm softened us up. She merrily handed me many wires and contraptions for accessing the internet via a LAN connection to a lap-top, but none of them worked with my iPad or phone.

By the second night, at least half the lights were on when we came back indicating that more guests had arrived and making the hotel feel more cheerful. I took a hot bath with plenty of hot water as l prepared to do battle with the rock-hard mattress. I woke up early the next morning and hiked the path behind the hotel up to the pilgrimage church for an amazing view before breakfast. By then we both agreed that having Frau Stroetz and the other guests around made a world of difference in how we viewed this place.

I would recommend this hotel for adventurous travelers and also for young people who can live without WIFI connection.

We have stayed at this wonderful gem of hotel twice and have been treated so wonderfully. The rooms are huge and older with floor to ceiling windows and expansive views of Bad Toelz. We were totally charmed the first time, so we had to come back and we were not disappointed. Romantic Germany at it's finest, this historic little town will charm you and you will rest comfortably at the Kolbergarten.

It is a 3 star hotel, so don't expect more and you will be very happy. The room was large, bathroom great, location perfect. We needed to leave early so they organised breakfast early for us and we still got the full spread. My favourite part was sitting on our balcony, having a Bavarian beer, overlooking the small town out to the alps after a busy day sightseeing in the area. A short walk took us to a number of restaurants and the heart of town. We could have easily stayed an extra couple of days. The lovely hospitality made it hard to leave as well.
