Detailed Reviews
We had a very pleasant stay for two night at the Porto Sofie. An authentic and unique hotel in a small beautiful area / town in Switzerland. As the hotel is in an old house the rooms do not have air conditioning which can be very difficult it they did have a good fan in our room which helped a lot. We had the junior suite as we where a family of three including a teenage son and the room was tight but had it been for just a couple it would have been perfect.
We had dinner at the restaurant both evenings and the meals where fantastic as well was the service.
Definitely give the hotel by recommendation especially for couples as it seems like a great romantic getaway.

It is our favorite place to stay when in Switzerland's Northeast. A few km from the ancient Konstanz and on the Rhine river connecting the Lake of Constance's 'upper lake' and 'lower lake' you find this small agglomeration of Hotels, restaurants and, across a moat, a privately owned mysterious chateau. The Hotel is a classic, quiet and comfortable. Excellent traditional cuisine and wines from the region. Get a room overlooking the Rhine and watch the Swans or the skiff rowers glide through the waters early morning. A hundert meters across, in Germany, an extended riedy marsh adds to the sense of timeless tranquility.
Do not miss to visit the small castle Arenenberg on the hill above Ermatingen, the place of Hortense de Beauharnais and her son who was to become Napoleon III.

This hotel is special !
Its Swiss history with bags of atmosphere and I lked it !
The staff are helpful and easy to talk too even if your Swiss German is almost zero - like mine !
The setting is on the Rhine, a beautiful river that provides a magnificent back drop to the place and many interesting boat trips to a veriety of places.
This is a peaceful place so its not for those that love night clubs.
The local patisseries provide some of the best culinary delights in the word in my humble opinion and they are proud of what they make and it shows. Thats Switzerland and great to see.
I thought the cost was very reasonable and as its local to Germany so you have both countries at your door step.
To sum up just remember this place is a peace of history and I believe beautiful.
If you want that - you wont be dissapointed.
Check it out !

Rooms are pretty old, the bed a little bit too soft. Staff is friendly and the breakfast is super.
Considering the area, which is pretty expensive this hotel is not bad, not nothing special neither.
The thing I didn't like is that the pictures they use in the website are completely different from the reality.

The Drachenburg is a lovely timbered building in a stunning location within the beautiful fishing village of Gottlieben. Serene. Front desk was welcoming and friendly even to a mud spattered cyclist. Great spacious rooms facing the river. The decor is a bit dated but of a high quality and well maintained (this is Switzerland after all). Service at breakfast was a bit of a let down. The waitress seemed to regard the guests as a bit of a nuisance and preferred to conduct loud conversations with her colleague.

The hotel is near the River Rhein, which is absolutely perfect. We were early and our rooms were ready and they didn't wait the check-in time which was great for us. The neighborhood is very silent so you can have a deep sleep

Our stay was in the Waaghaus part of the hotel. The rooms appeared rather dated (yes they are supposed to be antique style, but could use some upgrades.) Cloth wallpaper was beautiful, but could use a cleaning.
Very quiet and a good place to spend a restful night.
The breakfast buffet at 17 Franks / person was overpriced. It was plentiful, but basic.
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful in every way.

We had a delicate dinner in the restaurant with fresh fish and a nice view at the riverside. We enjoyed the silence during night and the fresh air. It is a very nice place to stay for a few days also for walking or biking. Unfortunately we stayed there only one night.
