My wife and I rented the Starboard cottage for our honeymoon. It was an amazing place to fall asleep and wake up to. The view across the straight was breathtaking. The hot tub was an great way to relax in the evening. The 'kitchen' was more that enough for us, including the BBQ.

A friend and I stayed in the Starboard cottage last week. This spot is truly beautiful, overlooking the ocean and the mountains . There are gorgeous huge trees surrounding the buildings and the flowers and gardens are beautiful. The cottage was so thoughtfully decorated and stocked, and clean. Truly well looked after and very clean. Everything you could possibly need to cook is supplied and the barbeque outside was clean and large. The deck is covered and has comfy chairs and a hammock. There is a patio with nice table and chairs, there is an outdoor hot tub under a canopy and large comfy chaise lounge chairs. We saw eagles, a deer , bunnies , tons of birds and best of all two gorgeous peacocks. I would highly recommend this accommodation.

We stayed 3 nights in the Port Cottage over Memorial Day weekend. The cottage is nicely appointed with all the comforts and the view is awesome. I knew from the web site pix that it would be great, but pictures don't do it justice.
Things I liked:
> Our own bubbling hot tub, available 24x7.
> The elevated floor in the back half of the cottage where the bed sits, giving us a view of the Strait when we first opened our eyes in the morning.
> The DVDs and audio CDs (although we never watched or listened to any)
> A vase full of walking sticks. We used one—and broke it (sorry Ron & June!)
> The cathedral-like grove of tall red cedars on the property.
> The ceiling fan.
> The horseshoe pit.
> The secluded feeling at this location.
What I didn't like so much:
> Leaving.

We stayed in the Captain's Quarters and it was great. It's just like staying in a family home, tons of books and games. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need, including milk, butter, cereal and pancake mix! The view is spectacular and if you make your way down to the beach (it is a bit of hike but there are salmon berries along the trail!) it's very private and you can walk for a ways. The gardens are beautiful and lovingly cared for. It is a very relaxing place, the owners are lovely, this was our second time visiting and was just a good as the first time. The Shirley Delicious cafe up the road is incredible as well, great lunch and lots of yummy baked goods, and great coffee. You can't go only once!

We spent the weekend at Orveas Bay and appreciated all the unexpected special little touches - from milk and cold water in the fridge to plush bath towels for the hot tub.
The view was amazing during the day, and even better at nights as we watched the cruise ships go by with their beautiful lights. We lucked out and there was a sailing race during our stay that brought boats with coloured spinnakers sailing past.
Such a wonderful retreat!

Oh Orveas... we love coming back. If you look at the website and wonder "Could this place possibly be as nice as it looks on the website?" I wish to confirm that it is just as lovely, possibly even better, in person. We love this location - a quick hour from Victoria and only 15 minutes past Sooke places Orveas within easy reach of all that the Juan de Fuca marine trail and beaches have to offer. After a day exploring the forest or beaches to return to Orveas is fantastic. Even better is having a relaxing day right at Orveas Bay and taking the stairs down to the shore below. In recent years we have had great experiences with vacation rentals of the kind found here on TA or other sites that specialize in vacation homes - I always found myself comparing each great place to Orveas Bay. It remains the benchmark for our family.
Our family first visited in 2001 and it is probably among the first places I found on the Internet and still one of the very best. In those early years of finding great vacation homes online OB was the first place that had an informative, beautiful website that did justice to the actual home and surrounding area. Like many travelers we have high expectations regarding cleanliness, location, and the ability to simply relax and unwind. Orveas Bay delivers in all these key areas. Orveas surpassed our expectations in terms of the care and attention provided by Ron and June. I think our most recent visit was at least our 7th family vacation to Orveas Bay. Our son was 4 years old when we first went to Orveas and as a 19 year old he was totally on board for a return visit this summer - our first visit in the summer for almost 10 years. We love the Captain's Quarters but way back in 2001 stayed on the First Mate's side and it was great too.
I could list the features that we love or simply tell you that the website is accurate and to trust it and know that if you have questions that they will be answered promptly before you book. It is worth a mention that OB is on well water - so no dishwasher or on-site laundry (check into laundromat and laundry service in Sooke if needed) our preference is to either hand wash if absolutely needed or just overpack! There is an unbelievable view out to the Strait so washing dishes becomes an opportunity to spend time enjoying an amazing view while planning the next adventure. There are great dining options in the area if you prefer going out. We love to BarBQ onsite and have fewer meals out. We typically enjoy a special outing to the dining room at Point-No-Point just a few short minutes away. This year we tried the pub in Port Renfrew - the one with the huge deck over the water (Port Renfrew is small- no additional details required!) This was a good stop after many hours at Botanical Beach looking at tide pools and collecting beach glass. Back at Orveas water is supplied and kitchen staples including enough butter, juice and milk/ cream to get your trip started as well as pancake mix, coffee, tea, spices and cereal for your stay. The hot tub is maintained daily and shared with only the guests in the other side of the house as the newer units (port and starboard) each have a hot tub. Enjoy the privacy, lush gardens in the summer and wild life including bald eagles, hummingbirds and whale watching. I tend to review our best experiences and places here on TA and of all our favorites Orveas Bay is simply the one that we return to and feel as though we are 'home'. Our family is grateful for each opportunity to reconnect and relax at Orveas Bay.

Thank you for your kind words... you are our "oldest" family and we are truly amazed at how Andrew has grown along with our time here..we have all experienced good and trying times over these years but problems seem to disappear sitting on a deck chair watching the boat pass by and sun setting over the sea. So many changes have happened in Sooke over these years.. love the new laundermat and dry cleaners . the bakeries, the car washes, and lots of new eating places.. move over Mom's cafe' sushi is the rage!. And of course Phillip and Shirley Delicious. just great coffee and food.. we are so lucky to have this spot so close by.. We are just back from a month long trip experiencing another part of the world and for an update on our travels thru the Panama canal and south America please read our year end "About us" page I will write some of the highlights of that trip. .. So until you return , take good care.. June & Ron

My husband and I absolutely loved this place. It's right at our back door and we had no idea. We stayed in the Port cabin and it was fantastic. Lovely little romantic get away. Awesome view of Jaun de Fuca straight. Your own Private hot tub and a shower you could probably fit 4 people in. it had a gas fireplace for those cooler nights and your own gas barbecue. The bed was super comfortable as well as the furniture. The only thing I would add is there isn't a Kitchen per se. There's a sink and a microwave and a toaster oven and a bar fridge and also a single hot plate. But no stove or real oven. It was good for us but maybe not for someone else. There are bigger cabins with a full kitchen and more living space, but what we had suited us perfectly. Did I mention that the outside decor and plants give you the illusion that you were someplace tropical, absolutely beautiful. It's close enough to Victoria for visiting and seeing the sights. It's close to Sooke and about 4 really nice beaches. By the way if you go to Sooke try Mom's restaurant, yummy home made cooking.

We stayed in the Port Cottage for three nights. Ron and June have done a great job furnishing the cottage and supplying almost everything you need to make for a comfortable stay. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well maintained. The room has its own baseboard heaters and a gas fire for extra heat and ambiance. There is a walk-in shower with lots of hot water. Two bedside lamps, off the wall, so you can actually read in bed. TV with good supply of DVDs. Don't think you get cable. The fridge had milk, cream, sauces, syrup. Also supplied was ample coffee, tea and seasonings. You have to use the supplied drinking water as they collect water off the cliff and pump it back up to a holding tank for use in the showers, toliet, kitchen. Lots of reading material supplied. We loved having our own hot tub just outside the door and at 105 degrees F it was the ideal temperature with a magnificant view of the sea and passing ships. There is adequate natural screening between Port and Starboard cottages and they are far enough apart as not to be a problem. We met friends who were staying at the Captain's and First Mate Cabins (small world) and were invited to look around their cottages. Magnificant. big, roomy and very comfortable for a family or group of friends. For us - too much space for just a romantic weekend - we prefered Port Cottage. Things to do: walk down the cliff to their beach - 10 minutes and recommended you use one of their supplied walking sticks. There is a 3.4 Km CRD forest walk about 15 minutes walk away with a short side trip to visit the now unused lighthouse (through walkers gate (not locked) and down the vehicle road). All-in-all a relaxing place to stay. Probably better in the summer when you can make more use of the garden and games supplied - horse shoes, volleyball, badmington. Recommended - yes.

After travelling for a month in Canada, we arrived here and were gobsmacked by the beauty of the accommodation and its surroundings. We were casually warned about the black bear nearby and wandered down to the beach through the forest trying to ignore the rustling of the berry bushes around us. Bear droppings spotted but fortunately no bear sightings. This place was a piece of heaven and although we're in Australia, we would dearly love to return one day to this place.

Our recent stay in the Captain's Suite was much more than we expected. Our luck in the past has been to stay in rentals where things don't work properly. Here, everything functioned and was of good quality, in good condition and clean. We would happily stay again and I would give it five stars if the water had been of drinking quality (although plenty of bottled water was provided), a dishwasher was included and if there had been a second bathroom. The three of us found one bathroom a bit inconvenient, although it was a nice bathroom! Thank you for the excellent directions for locating this peaceful place, very helpful as it was getting toward evening when we arrived.
