I chose to stay at the Selena in Maderas for three nights as I was looking for a nice hostel close to a beach near San Juan. That said, it was a bit disappointing to find out that the Selena is not at Maderas Beach but a 15 to 20 Minute walk away from it (first have is up hill the second down hill). Also it is a bit of a drive from San Juan which I did not mind - BUT if you want to do Sunday Funday, I recommend choosing a hostel in San Juan. The Selena in Maderas did not offer a shuttle bus late at night on Sundays in December 2019 so that everyone who went to party in San Juan either had to book another hostel in town or had to pay 15 USD for a taxi back to Selena. The Hostel itself is quite stylish and the rooms are spacious with their own ensuite ( I stayed in a female 4-bed dorm). The staff unfortunately was not the most helpful. During my stay they ran out of fruit and banana bread on Sunday during breakfast and were unable to provide any solution (any alternative would have been welcome). Also when I asked the reception why our room was not cleaned everyday, their response was "it probably was not dirty". I did receive better service in Nicaragua.

My boyfriend and I spent our first visit in Nicaragua at Selina Maderas near San Juan Del Sur for the first half of our adventure, 5 nights total. Amazing vibes, felt like home with all the eccentric artwork and cool layout. The staff was friendly and welcoming, including the daytime and evening servers and bartenders, like Keith, who gave us great tips and ideas for surfing at nearby beaches, as well as the best bars to check out for night life in the city, plus he made the best piña coladas of all time! The clean communal kitchen to cook for ourselves was nice and spacious, and the restaurant on site served great food, too. The room was clean, comfortable and met all of our expectations, though be mindful- the walls are thin so you can hear your neighbours clearly (and they can hear you, too!) The shuttle to SJDS was reliable, always on time taking us to and from the main city (about 20 mins drive) and very affordable. Two beautiful beaches were less than 10 mins of a walk away and the surf was perfectly consistent for both rookies like us and pros, alike. Overall, we were so happy with our time spent at Selina Maderas and would absolutely return to try out more of what they have to offer, including horse riding tours and surf lessons. Highly recommend and would for sure try other Selina locations around the world!

The room, shower and bathrooms were clean. This was the only positive aspect of our stay (hence the 2 stars). All of the staff was extremely rude and unkind. Every time we would ask a question they would roll their eyes or give an unclear or unhelpful response. At night our AC was not on so I went to a few of the staff who were busy playing cards in the restaurant and asked them to turn it on. They all looked at each other and rolled their eyes. How rude!! We were all under the impression that all they cared about was making money. Not only that but the location is a huge burden. It is not close to anything except Playa Maderas. There are a few shuttles during the day to San Juan Del Sur but you need to pay and the times are not ideal.

Had a great stay in Selina Maderas, the location is great with less than a 10 minute walk to the beach. The rooms are nice and clean with comfortable beds. Our aircon wasn’t working or the hot water but I know this is a feature that the Selina offers. The restaurant is nice and serves good food. They have a kitchen downstairs also, it just isn’t equipped with much cooking utensils. A big shout out goes to one of there wonderful staff members called Simon! He went above and beyond to make sure that we had the best surfing holiday possible. We can’t thank Simon enough for everything he did for us, what a great asset he is to the Selina team. One downside of Selina is the loud music that they play, a simple problem that can be an easy fix.

This is the perfect spot to disconnect. Away from the busy San Juan life and so close to the most beautiful sunset. Loved the colors, vibe and the staff. My room was beautiful and comfy, food was delicious and beer was cold. Make sure you go all the way up to the perfect spot they have to meditate, talk or just relax in a hammock.
