My friend and I went to a singing workshop in the Old Town of Almonte, near Ottawa, ON. Sure we could have driven home after the workshop, after the lovely dinner out, and after the evening concert. But there was a craft market the next day so we should stay and anyway, who wants to drive home late at night when two separate beds awaited us at Menzies House. We had done this before, years ago, same set up: staying overnight after a late night concert. We could have driven to Carleton Place to stay in a standard hotel, two double beds in a conventional room. However, staying in a B and B, in an old town, with quaintness surrounding us was our best choice. The room we stayed in is on the top floor and feels like the kind of bedroom two sisters would have shared in years gone by. A wee en suite bathroom had replaced what was probably a closet in previous times. . We slept in our two single beds, chatting into the night, the first one to drop off had permission to do so without apology. The second one had the gift of breathing in the silence of a room full of memories. Who had lived there before? Would I go back and stay again? Absolutely! Once the lockdown is over and our health is only at average risk. Once we say to ourselves, "I'm free, like really free, Where can we go that's special?" Menzies House in Almonte. That's where. Definitely a modest and peaceful girlfriend getaway. Bon nuit and stay well. (from the time of COVID)

A century home in a quaint, stone town. The Menzies House B&B provides all the comforts of the modern world into an antique setting. The swimming pool is full size and well maintained. The breakfast was truly amazing. The king size bed was very comfortable and the ensuite bathroom was very welcome.
Parking could be an issue depending on the number of guests, but the overflow parking is a nice walk over the bridge.

My husband and I had the very good fortune to be given a night at this great B&B for our birthdays. The house was built in 1850 and has been in use for different purposes ever since. It has been lovingly restored by the present owner and it is so beautifully done, so relaxing, that we wished we had more time to spend there. We had a room with a king bed and lovely view over the river. The breakfast was served in the formal dining room and my mouth is still watering remembering the scones fresh out of the oven! I also had homemade granola, fresh fruit, yogurt, orange juice and unlimited coffee. My husband had fresh blueberry pancakes sprinkled with icing sugar and topped with fresh berries. There is a pool, plenty of space on the lawn to sit in a Muskoka chair and enjoy the river. Inside one can relax in the living-room or enjoy the library with shelves of books or if one so wishes, the television. Downtown Almonte is in easy walking distance and such cute shops! We are already thinking of when we could visit again.

I have stayed with Pat and Frank Vetter in their very charming B & B five or six times, on my own and with my husband and daughters. Each stay has been nothing less than wonderful. The Rose Room is our favorite with a king size bed and spacious en suite. The breakfasts are among the best we have ever had with Pat's special pancakes, scones and other treats. We love the porch overlooking the beautiful gardens and Almonte River. But most of all, we appreciate Pat and Frank's genuine hospitality. Pat and Frank open their home and their hearts to all their guests. You will not be disappointed.

What a lovely spot, with a garden leading down to the water's edge, plenty of chairs and loungers for relaxing, and pretty views of the Old Town Hall across the way.

I booked a room here at the last minute and stayed in the Rose Room. Spacious room, comfy bed, great Wifi, and a plate of homemade cookies left on the bedside table.

Hosts were charming and attentive, and breakfast was great: fresh coffee, yogurt and fruit, eggs benedict, and warm, fresh scones.

We stayed here one night and loved it. The price is lower than any place at that level. Nice house with comfortable rooms and a pool, good breakfast and lovely hosts, all in a beautiful small town. Rooms have fan and AC. Bathroom is spacious and clean. Wifi works fine.

We were in Almonte photographing a wedding and stayed at Menzies B & B. What a beautiful house, perfect hosts, the room was amazing and breakfast was to die for. Will definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone wanting a place to get away from it all.

I'm not usually a fan of bed and breakfast inns, but I have to say we loved our stay at Menzie House. The home is beautifully decorated and comfortable. Sometimes I find B&B's to be a bit too "twee" - this one isn't. It's a really comfortable home. Our hosts were extremely interested in their guests and have wonderful stories to share. My only regret is we didn't get to have breakfast, we had a breakfast appointment at a local restaurant and missed out on the meal which looked lovely. Very high marks for the pool and patio which looks like something out of "House and Gardens Magazine". The riverside perennial gardens in summer are also a real attraction. We'll find an excuse to go back.

My wife and I stayed three nights, with friends, while exploring the nation's capital area. Pat and Frank were gracious hosts; fun, informative and helpful.
Breakfast was excellent in the mornings. Fresh, local fruit, pancakes, eggs and amazing scones.
We stayed in the King Room, which was well appointed and included it's own fully furnished bathroom.

The Century Home was in excellent condition with all of historic appointments of the era it was built in.
An attached Cabana and pool made for an ideal swim, and the location was terrific base to explore other areas of the Ottawa region.

We'd absolutely stay at the Menzies House again!
Pat's attention to detail and bright spirit, made this stay a very memorable one.

This is my first review where I'm tempted to delete instead of post, because this obscure place is a treasure worth keeping secret.

Before we'd even left, we knew we'd come back.

An immaculate mansion, older than Canada, perfectly appointed in delightful period decor, with warm homeowner hosts. When we first wearily walked into our generous suite, the warm spring breeze was dancing with the sheer curtains through a window that gave a superb view of old Almonte across the river.

Even the breakfast had a period vibe, with fresh Irish scones, Depression glass, and Eggs Benedict.

Location, location, location: Just across the bridge is the Barley Mow pub, perched over the raging river (spring melt), and several centenarian streets full of re-invented shops, restaurants and bakeries. (Almonte is only about 50km west of Ottawa).
A five minute drive away is a world champion chocolate factory, Hummingbird.

Urban refugees have obviously helped reinvent this town, in a good way, since the last of its woollen mills closed before 2000. But the old world charm remains, and no where more magically than Menzies House B&B.

Visit before the owners retire and it becomes more of a business and less of a grand old home.

So I will post this treasure map, but resolved to make our reservation early -- ahead of yours!
