My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay for Spring Break. Safety was my number one priority since it was just the two of us traveling; I never felt uneasy or unsafe.
Pros: not crowded, great pool area, lovely landscaping. The hotel staff was beyond amazing; Michele at the concierge desk went above and beyond to make our trip a breeze by booking all the transportation and activities!
Cons: It is an hour away from the airport; however the drive is beautiful. The coffee is not the best and $12 lattes to boot (I am a coffee snob so if you are, too- be prepared). The pool service could have been better. Some days I had to flag someone down to take my order versus being approached.

Tips: there are water bottle fill stations throughout the property so bring a water bottle. As expected, the food is expensive- review the menus before going so you are prepared for the prices. There is a small store within walking distance for snacks and such.

The rooms were nice; I would not align it with other Ritz Carlton properties so I’m giving it 4 stars. The decor was a bit worn and not hitting the mark of five star details.

Aloha C3591GFmeganm, Mahalo for your loyalty to our brand and for taking the time to evaluate your stay with us at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. We are pleased to read you and your daughter had a pleasant time at our pool and that you loved our inspiring surroundings and accommodations, as well as our elevated hospitality. It will be a pleasure to relay your kind remarks to our Ladies and Gentlemen, especially Michele. Having said that, we are sorry for not meeting some of your expectations. Maui is known for its unique geographical location, which can impact the availability and cost of certain goods and services. As a result, prices for food and beverages in the area can be higher compared to other destinations. However, we continually strive to offer a range of dining options that cater to various budgets. Your comments will be shared appropriately, and we appreciate your valuable input, as it can help us explore potential areas for improvement. We are also grateful to you for sharing your thoughts about the coffee we serve, as we are always looking for ways to enhance our guest services. We have also taken note of your additional feedback and will convey it to the appropriate individuals for any future revitalization plans. We hope to see you and your daughter again soon. We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton for our honeymoon, traveling with our 11-month-old baby, and it was absolutely amazing. The location is perfect—peaceful, green, and quiet. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, this is it. When we arrived, we were greeted with a refreshing drink and the traditional Hawaiian leis, which was a really nice touch.

We stayed in the Lasai Suite, and I can’t recommend it enough. The suite was huge, and we had a private patio with a firepit. Every night, we’d light the firepit, sip drinks, and enjoy the sounds of the ocean and the beautiful starry sky. It was such a peaceful, memorable experience.

The hotel also went out of their way to make sure our baby was comfortable. They set up a crib for us and even left a bag with toys and baby soap. We were especially impressed that they included plug protectors—little things like that really show they care about families, and it made our stay so much easier.

We had fun exploring the hotel the next day. There are three big pools, including a kids’ pool, plus two hot tubs that are open all day. We didn’t get a chance to try the hot tubs since we had the baby with us, but we saw other guests enjoying them in the evenings.

For lunch, we grabbed a bite at the burger spot on property. My wife had a double burger and a milkshake, both of which were delicious—definitely come hungry because the portions are huge!

The cocktails at the hotel were great, and if you have access to the Club Lounge, you can enjoy complimentary drinks, snacks, and options for lunch and dinner. The views from both the lounge and the restaurant are incredible, and the staff was super friendly. Breakfast had lots of choices, including made-to-order omelettes and eggs, and everything was fresh and delicious.

There’s a beautiful beach right on the property, and other beaches are just a short walk or shuttle ride away. The hotel also offers a shuttle to nearby restaurants, which is really convenient. We worked with the concierge team a couple of times—they helped us book some great dinner reservations and even set up a spa day for my wife. She had a one-hour massage and spent the rest of the day relaxing in the spa, which she loved.

Overall, we’re so happy with our choice and would absolutely stay here again if we ever come back to Maui. The service, the amenities, and the attention to detail made for a fantastic experience.

We travelled to Maui, HI, the day after Christmas and stayed until New Year's Day. It was a fantastic family vacation -- one of the best our family had taken. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton, Kapalua. It was a very good stay. We opted for the Club Lounge, which was outstanding; breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks with cocktails and evening dessert. Breakfast in particular was truly great. The facilities: rooms; pools; fitness center; spa; beach were all at the high standard expected of a Ritz Carlton. The concierge staff (with a particular call out to Cynthia Ah Sam) was terrific. In fact, in many ways, Ms. Sam made out trip what it was by properly scheduling great activities, which included golf (which was outstanding playing both the Plantation and Bay Side courses at Kapalua Resort which, notably is separate from the Ritz), taking in the sunrise on top of Mt. Haleakala, a sunset whale watching cruise where we saw many whales including some full breeches which were exhilarating. Ms. Sam also arranged a chef's table for us at Banyon Tree Restaurant - the Ritz's premier dining location. Chef Donovan prepared led us through an outstanding 5-course dinner. He is an amazing young talent!! She also sent us "off campus" to two terrific restaurants not far from the hotel.

Only two things did not meet the service we've come to expect from a Ritz Carlton hotel. The first, the Alaloha Lounge -- the Ritz' only casual dining location open, caused a significant amount of stress in that it was not sufficiently or appropriately staffed for the crowd of people looking to have a casual meal. This was true on both occasions we ate there. The Ritz has a "grab a table when it opens" policy that is no way to run a captive restaurant - particularly with holiday crowds. For both occasions that we dined at Alaloha Lounge, getting a table turned into a version of the Hunger Games to get a table. Then, given the nature of the seating, you had guests staying at their place long after they had eaten. It created a highly stressful and distasteful situation for a casual meal. Think twice before you eat there . . . particularly if it's crowded.

The second thing you should know is that the golf experience while staying at the Ritz is not seamless. The Ritz and Kapalua Golf Resort are separate entities and they act like it. Each blaming the other for the clunky processes including shuttle service to and from the courses; getting tee-times; and, payment (can't charge fees to your room at the Ritz. I found the clunkiness between the two to be surprising; fine for a Marriott, not so much for a Ritz Carlton.

Other than that our stay was fantastic. I suspect that the circumstances associated with the holidays had much to do with the two issues above, so to some extent they can be forgiven. But guests are paying a holiday premium for the stay at a hotel chain that has generally been associated with very high standards of service and hospitality. The two issues noted above are two places where the Ritz is clearly not meeting those standards.

I revisited the Ritz Carlton after three years; I love the location and the views. I had booked a partial ocean view but because of electrical work on one side of the hotel, they moved me to another side that was full ocean view. The view was gorgeous and the balcony was a beautiful place to sit and be still. The service, for the most part, was great as usual. It is normally part of my daily ritual to spend time at the lounge in the lobby by one of the firepits and get appetizers. The room was well-appointed, the bathroom did have a bidet that did not function fully (it was fun finding that out). The grounds are well-kept.

The hotel has been remodeled, and many of the policies have changed. If there are people that are going to stay at the hotel, there are some costs that have changed that you need to be prepared for. There is a daily resort fee, the parking fee is $65, and there is no longer self-parking you have to use valet, this was annoying, especially on the day when there was no one at the desk after we came back after a long day. At my last stay, if you were a hotel guest, you could visit the spa without treatment for a fee, this is no longer an option. For a four-day stay, the incident hold was $800. The first time I stayed at the Ritz I did not rent a car, so I ate at all of the restaurants, and my favorite was the pool restaurant at lunchtime. This trip I was unable to make it during the day. I went there during the evening, and the food was not at all worth the cost. Since my first trip, I always rent a car so that I can visit more of the local eateries.

The location is what always brings me back, I love being able to walk down to the beach and watch the waves and rainbows. This is no longer my go-to Maui hotel/resort; I will go when I desire to be in a more secluded area.

We recently stayed at The Ritz-Carlton for four nights, and while the resort is 5-star, the room definitely did not live up to that standard. The resort offers several pools and hot tubs/jacuzzis, which are great for relaxing after a surf at the beach. The beach itself is about a 12-13 minute walk from the room, along a neat little path that is quite convenient. The property is in an amazing location, with scenic views of the ocean. There are around six restaurants on the property, which is very convenient, along with a grab-and-go café.
However, the room was disappointing. We were not impressed with the so-called upgrades. The "Ocean View" room doesn’t actually face the ocean directly, despite being marketed and charged as such. To get the view, you have to walk out onto the balcony and turn in a certain direction. The wooden floors are dated and unclean, creaking with every step. There were dark spots on the floor, which is far from the 5-star experience we expected for the price. Even worse, we found cockroaches in the room and wasp nests on the balcony. We had to complain for the staff to address these issues (pictures attached). On the positive side, the room did have a modern smart toilet and a Nespresso machine.
Be aware that beyond the hotel rate, there are additional charges, including valet parking at $65 per day and a $55/day resort fee that is billed to your card upon checkout.

Playing the Plantation Course and the Bay Course at Kapalua was a highlight of our GolfAhoy golf cruise around the Hawaiian Islands aboard the Pride of America.

From the first time I visited the island, the beauty of Maui and its world-class golf courses have always taken my breath away.

After the cruise ended in Honolulu, we returned to Maui for a few days. Getting to Maui was a breeze. We booked an inexpensive flight on Hawaiian Air from Honolulu, and the 39-minute hop felt like no time.

Once we landed, the drive to The Ritz-Carlton at Kapalua set the tone for an unforgettable stay. Nestled near the Bay Course and a short ride from The Plantation Course, the Ritz is in a spectacular location that feels both luxurious and close to nature.

Before tackling the Plantation Course for the second time, my wife took advantage of some Kapalua Golf Academy lessons. The PGA Professionals there are phenomenal. Their fine-tuning lessons made a noticeable difference in my wife’s game, and I noticed how popular the Academy was, especially with first-timers or partners new to golf. If you have the time, their three-day golf school program is worth considering.

After a day on the greens, nothing hit the spot quite like the Wagyu Burger and Fries at the Ritz’s Alaloa Lounge overlooking Honokahua Bay, and I can confidently say it was the most flavorful burger I’ve ever had in my life. However, I can’t say the same for the Salt & Vinegar Crispy Calamari – one bite was enough to know it wasn’t for us. Thankfully, our server was gracious and promptly removed it from our bill. My wife, always on top of her Bonvoy rewards points, mentioned that Ritz-Carlton staff are empowered to resolve guest issues up to $1,000 on the spot. That kind of service really sets them apart.

Advice. Hang out for the sun-setting ceremony during the native Hawaiian prayer service.

One evening, we decided to splurge at The Banyan Tree restaurant. Yes, it’s pricey – this is Hawaii, but the $78 Seafood Curry was worth every penny.

If you’re planning a GolfAhoy Hawaii golf cruise, here’s my advice: ask your GolfAhoy travel advisor to add on their post-cruise package at The Ritz-Carlton Maui. It includes transportation, accommodation, and golfer amenities.

Advice. Another must? Upgrade to the Ritz Club Lounge access. Throughout the day, you can indulge in gourmet food and beverages, and the exclusivity of the experience is well worth the fee.

Maui, Kapalua, and The Ritz-Carlton were everything I dreamed of and more – the perfect end to an unforgettable Hawaii golf cruise vacation.

I’ve read a lot of the reviews on this site that caused me to be dubious about coming here, but we had an excellent experience. Here are a few things to set the record straight:
-Our room was beautiful and not dated in any way.
-The cleaning was impeccable. There was not a stray hair or dust anywhere.
-Maid service is performed daily, without requesting it.
-Turn down is available upon request.
-The bath towels are super plush and absorbent.
-The pool lounges are covered with a terry cloth sheet. The pool towels are in fine shape.

We chose to use the Club Level. The food was more varied and generous than some other Club Levels I’ve visited on the mainland. The hosts there really make the experience. Leilani watched over us with great care, anticipating our every need. Leena heard every request my husband made, followed up in a timely manner and then checked in the next day to make sure he had received everything he requested. It’s such a gift to have that kind of service these days, and these ladies exhibit the true Ritz motto- Ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen. Well done.

Our trip this winter at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua was incredible. It started off with the Ritz Carlton team helping us with an upgrade for our stay, which allowed us to stay in a 1 bedroom residence with a partial ocean view. The room was fantastic and the extra space made it perfect for our small family.

Margie at the front desk was an absolute joy to work with. She was very helpful in some of the accommodations that she made for us, but it truly felt like she was there looking out for us which means the world! The concierge as also very helpful in getting a tee time booked on the Plantation Course which is a must if you are into golf!

The island and resort were beautiful. Pools were very clean and accommodating when our 7 year old was doing his best to find friends and run around the area.

We have always loved coming to Maui, and the Ritz Carlton makes that experiences a complete joy! Thank you, thank you, thank you RC team!

Everything you would expect from a Ritz! Beautiful property situated in Kapalua, a quiet enclave with beautiful beaches. The service was outstanding throughout the property from the minute we arrived until we left.

The food was delicious in each outlet we ate in, although pricey, even for Maui. Service in the restaurants was top notch also and we enjoyed the Hawaiian music one night in the lounge.

The rooms were spacious and incredibly comfortable with rich wood and decor that reminded me of how Hawaiian royalty would live back in the day. Super comfy beds, spacious bathroom with separate shower, soaking tub, and private toilet area. Loved the his & her closet space.

The property was beautiful with nice pools, including an adult pool, a couple of family pools, and even a kids' pool for little ones. DT Fleming Beach is down the path where the property meets the ocean.

We were only here one night and wished we had more time to enjoy this property, but we will for sure be back!

Stayed here for 5 nights in November. I’m not sure if it was the time of the year, but the weather was not good, but often upon leaving the resort we often found sunny and beautiful conditions. I booked this on points and had a very nice time but would have been disappointed if I’d paid for these stay.

The rooms were fine, not spectacular. Upon checking in we were told only rooms with 2 queens were available. After a long day of travel this seemed fine and we weren’t given another alternative, but I wish we had asked if we could switch to a king room later in the week. There wasn’t any additional seating in the room and we didn’t need an additional bed.

Have stayed at the RC in Aruba and Tenerife in the past and would return to either of them in a heartbeat. We ended up extending our stay in Hawaii one additional night and stayed at the Sheraton by Black Rock and were shocked to love it and would stay here next time we come to Hawaii. This may also be an “expectations” thing- we had sky high expectations and hopes for this property and were slightly disappointed, low expectations for Sheraton and they were greatly exceeded.

The rooms were surprisingly dark, and not good lighting and lamps around. Even the bathroom lighting felt dim.

Bed was very comfortable! The food was good throughout, we ate dinner at Banyan Tree, lunch at the burger shack, and had drinks and appetizers at the lobby bar (get the spicy tuna bites!) meals were very expensive, and we’d anticipated this, but kind of shocking when a lunch of fish tacos, 1 beer and a shared appetizer is about $100.

It was a little bit of a hike to the beach but serene once there and the staff was attentive and kind. We saw a turtle on the beach our first morning. There is a golf cart shuttle to take you to the beach if you want it. We had rented snorkel gear for the week but didn’t attempt it at this beach, the water was too strong.

The week we were there the sun set behind the building by about 3 pm and the pools were shaded and felt freezing. The hot tub was very crowded all the time, and there were 2 hot tubs usually but one was closed for repairs. The pools and hot tubs are open 24/7 but we never really saw people using them, and pool water was way too cold by the evening.

Rooms have nespresso machines which is a nice way to start and end the day. Patio was comfortable and views were nice from the partial ocean view.

If you’re seeking gorgeous weather, probably best to consider another property. We won’t be back here but it’s a reflection of the location and not the hotel staff and services.

Cons: no turndown service, $65 valet- no other parking options, sun goes behind building at 3 pm, shading the pool. Weather could be rainy at resort but sunny just a few miles south
Pros: gorgeous property, kind staff, great but expensive food at the on site restaurants. Free chairs and umbrellas at the beach.

Best shaved ice is Ululani’s in Paia which is back by the airport. Our favorite restaurant is Flat Bread Pizza (all organic) right next door to the shaved ice!

Is there snorkeling off the beach in front of the Ritz Carlton or in Kapalua bay?
Answer from Jeannie D
Camarillo, California538 contributions147 helpful votes
The beach at the Ritz Carlton is pretty but with a steep descent and rough waves and most people do not snorkel there. You can take a free shuttle at the front outside with the bellmen and it will take you to Kapalua Bay Beach where you can rent snorkel equipment or bring your own and that is a much better beach for snorkeling. The bellman also have beach towels. The shuttle driver will ask when you want to be picked up or you can call them as they have a phone for transportation back to the hotel - about 10-15 minute ride each way. Beware that there are Lava rocks at both beaches and protective footwear would be recommended as the rocks can cut your feet. The beach there is beautiful.
