The Mill Hotel boasts a prime location loved by guests for its easy access to local attractions and scenic views. Despite this, some visitors have called out the hotel for not providing good value, citing overpriced services and unmet expectations. While the hotel's atmosphere is often praised for its charm and live music, reports of cleanliness and maintenance issues in rooms have been a concern. Additionally, while the staff is recognized for their friendliness, service can be slow, attributed at times to staff shortages.

Nice hotel in a nice location with nice staff and good food and would have been a higher rating if it wasn’t for their administrative and computer systems, which appear to be a bit of a mess so this review is intended to advise but not deter potential visitors.

We went as a group of three couples booked with Travelzoo vouchers. Although booked by one person they were all booked in our own names. Our friends had already checked in before we arrived but it took some time for us to check in because, as it turned out, they had mistakenly booked someone else (not one of our group) into our room. Finally sorted and our pre-booked room upgrade was honoured so not problem but people in front of us didn’t appear to be so lucky sorting out problems with their booking (it was ongoing as we went to our room) and if the hotel had been full (which it was the following night) we might not have been so lucky.

To avoid any confusion we were meticulous in charging drinks to our individual rooms and at dinner we did the same - separate tabs to take account of drinks and chargeable supplements on food.

Checking out turned out to be a bit of a trial. There was a queue and most people appeared to be having issues with what had been charged to their rooms. Our charges didn’t quite tally so it took some time to check it all out - in the end I reckoned there was a discrepancy of around 10% (not in our favour) with the issue appearing to be that all meal supplements for our group having mysteriously been added to our bill overnight. The thing is their bills were as anticipated so the system might have double counted. In the end I felt sorry for the poor receptionist and frankly our time was worth more so we just paid it because it had been an hour since we joined the queue.

I did complain to the Duty Manager, who acknowledged that there was an issue with their computer system.

That aside we had a pleasant overnighter with a lovely cream tea, a superb dinner and a very good breakfasts so do visit but just be mindful of the admin issues.

We spent 2 excellent nights here and ate in the restaurant and the bar. The hotel has a wonderful, quiet location just outside the town on the river with easy access to delightful walks across the water meadows.

Our room was in the old part of the hotel and was not the most spacious but very comfortable and well equipped with enough tea and coffee to last our whole stay. The bed was comfortable but I, personally, found the duvet too thick for summer. The en-suite bathroom had a nice walk-in shower with white fluffy towels, but the mirror over the basin is set back a long way and there is no light there, making shaving a hit or miss business!

Dinner in the restaurant was very good with a wide choice but they really need to invest in some larger napkins. The tiny black ones they currently have are completely useless! We also ate in the bar one night with a lovely view of the river. There is also a terrace, which is ideal for an al fresco drink.

The staff were unfailingly polite and helpful, especially Kaz with lots of local knowledge and information.

Good Afternoon Tom H Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review from you recent stay. I note your feedback regarding the lighting issue by the mirror in the bathroom and will take a look at this issue and see if there is a way on improving this in the room. The little black napkins that you mentioned were only in use due to a shortage of our normal linen napkins, unfortunately some of our suppliers have been running reduces services do to the current pandemic, but we are now starting to see improvements in these areas. I am pleased to read that our team were all welcoming and polite during your stay and that Kaz was able to share her knowledge of the local area with you during your stay. I look forward to welcoming you to The Mill hotel for a return visit in the near future. Kind Regards Leanne

We booked 4 nights via Great little Breaks (Thursday 27/8/20 to Monday 31/8/20). Our package included breakfast each morning, 2, two-course evening meals with a bottle of wine each evening and 2 cream teas - all for £378. We were not disappointed. The staff were friendly and helpful particularly Ant in the Restaurant. The food was excellent. Our room-No 9 on the second floor was a little on the small side but adequate. The shower cubicle was single size and probably in need of replacing. The hotel has lovely views over the marsh meadows and we enjoyed some nice walks across them. We are in our late 60's/early 70's and in hindsight should have booked a lower floor as there is no lift and my wife suffers with breathing difficulties. car parking no problem. We got about quite a bit, visiting Colchester, Mersea, Lavenham, Hadleigh, Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Southwold and Aldeburgh. Lavenham was lovely but parking the car was difficult as it was so busy.

This hotel is in a beautiful setting however other than that we weren’t exactly wowed.
We stayed 1 Sunday night in a Superior room which apparently should have “luxurious contemporary décor” although we failed to notice. The room was quite large but no larger than rooms in most ‘chain’ hotels; the small and standard rooms in the hotel must be very small. The room did have a lovely view over the river and fields. The espresso machine In the room was a nice touch and made good coffee. The main light in the room had an annoying habit of going off intermittently and, apart from 2 bedside lamps, there were no other lights on the dresser or near the mirrors. The en-suite was very small and basic but had good toiletries.
The restaurant was fully booked so we ate in the bar which is very nice although the blinds could have done with cleaning as there were a number of spiders and cobwebs on them. The quality of food was good although one of the starters was not available. I was surprised that there was a very limited choice of flavoured gins and that the bar staff did not know how to make an espresso Martini.
Breakfast was limited to cereals, toast, watery yoghurts, and a maximum of 7 items on the cooked menu. Apparently this was because of COVID but I didn’t realise there were shortages of sausages, bacon etc. Fruit salad was also available but you had to request it, it was not offered by the waiting staff. Definitely not worth the £12 charged.
The hotel was very COVID friendly with plenty of hand sanitisers, distance guidance in place, and the tables in both the restaurant and bar suitable distances apart.

Good Afternoon PSG0304 Thank you for taking the time in leaving us your feedback regarding your recent visit to The Mill Hotel, please accept my apologies that on this occasion the Hotel did not come up to the standards that you have quite rightly come to expect. Since re-opening in July and following the ever changing Covid-19 guidelines as a business, we had to make some changes to our previous operating procedures such as removal of the hot breakfast buffet and instead of offering our guests the options we previously did for a cooked breakfast, due to the removal of the hot buffet we needed to implement the rule of 7 as you have mentioned in your feedback, as a way of us being able to manage the breakfast service. I am pleased to hear that you found the hotel to be COVID friendly during your stay, again something that we are all adjusting to, however we try to ensure all our guests and team remain safe within the current circumstances. I hope one day to be able to welcome you back to The Mill Hotel for an experience you do enjoy and under very different circumstances. Kind Regards Leanne

No refinery or pretty bone china, breakfast ware white basic cups saucers, cafe stainless steel tea pot, different side plates, rusty looking tea tray. Easy listening music - the band Madness - doesn't really set the tone or the young girl just putting the bottle of prosecco in front of us even having to take off the cap ourselves - ARE WE at HOME or at a hotel.

Sandwiches were ham and mustard, salmon with no cream cheese, cucumber and cream cheese, small piece of sausage roll which tastest nice.

Scones we had one raisin in 2 sweet scones, we thought the other 2 scones were just plain not cheese as couldn't taste it. Packs of butter, packs of raspberry jam left over from breakfast service no swirls, rolls or pots or refinery.

Cakes you can buy at supermarkets or large food warehouse cut in squares and looked the same with frosting Carrot, Coffee and very sickly sweet chocolate fudge no variation i.e. fruit tarlet or macaroons.

The reception lady was welcoming and attentive, the older lady in afternoon lounge refilled tea, drinks did her best with the poor food quality and surroundings she had was pleasant and welcoming enough but nothing special.

The only thing special is the outside eating and drinking areas which have the view , its location to natural grazing land which is free and has nothing to do with the hotel.

We did not know what to expect when booked the Mill as had never been there before. But, we need not have worried. The Mill is in a great location, close for country walks but also close to the town.

Our room was clean, and very comfortable, it looked directly out onto the river and over fields, which was lovely and relaxing, other than the dog loved it a bit too much and cried if could not look out of the window. The room has all the amenities we needed and it was very pleasant.

The breakfast at The Mill was extremely tasty and we especially liked the veggie sausages (forgot to ask which ones they are), it was cooked well and tasted lovely. We cannot leave our dog alone and the team kindly let us eat in the bar area.

The team at The Mill are exceptional, they are friendly and helpful, they made us feel really welcome and the customer service was excellent.

All in all it was a lovely stay and we will definitely return.

Beautiful setting overlooking meadows and streams. Pleasant area to walk through with views from the bedrooms.
Staff and most guests wore masks in corridors and in reception. The bar was comfortable and food was served there, tables were wiped after use in the bar and in the restaurant . Hand sanitisers available in many areas. Hand gel available near breakfast station for everyone to use
Restaurant evening meal was of good quality but may need to ask for bar menu for additional choice, we would recommend the fish sharing platter, as a starter. Was extremely busy during the government eat out scheme, so service was slower on those three days. Ask for a ground floor room if you cannot walk far.

We stayed for two nights in September for a local wedding. I am utterly shocked at the number of positive reviews for The Mill as our experience was quite the opposite. When we first arrived we were given Room 49, it was dark, dirty, cobwebs all over the inside of the window, a huge black spider in the bathroom. The bathroom was awful, a shower curtain barely hanging on and facilities just not up to scratch, I have stayed in Premier Inns for £29 a night which were significantly better. I asked reception if there were any other rooms as I was not happy with the standards and cleanliness of room 49, fortunately another room was available, room 17. Though this room was bigger, brighter and had a slightly better bathroom with a shower; the standards of cleanliness are again abysmal; carpet moths, cobwebs, spiders, stains all over the bathroom, scuffs all over the walls, stains where someone had dropped something and it had not been wiped or cleaned up. I cannot fathom, given covid, how these standards are acceptable, it was disgusting. My partner and I went to the local Sainsburys and bought dettol wipes, flash bathroom cleaner and a mattress protector as I dare to think of what I couldn’t see. In cleaning the bathroom we identified that the sink wasn’t draining properly because the plug was blocked with hair and gunge which we used cotton buds to remove. See picture.
I did try to find alternative accommodation in the local area but everywhere was booked up.
I didn’t even get asked on checkout if I enjoyed my stay! Probably just as well.
All in all this was an awful experience and I would not recommend this hotel, ever.

Dear 276jessb, I am very disappointed to read about your stay at the Mill Hotel. I can only apologise that we let our high standards slip during your stay. I will be raising all your comments to the relevant department heads and re-double our efforts to ensure that we improve going forward. I can assure you that all of your feedback has been acted upon. Our head housekeeper & maintenance have been into both rooms to fix the issues that you have raised. I know that this is a reactive action to the problems you encountered but hope it shows how seriously we take all feedback from guests. Best Wishes, David

My husband and I enjoyed a delightful three course meal in the restaurant, an overnight stay, a delicous breakfast and a fabulous afternoon tea. The location of the hotel is beautiful, overlooking the river and mill pond, the morning frost only enhanced the view from our room. I was very impressed with the quality of the food it was absolutely gorgeous and very reasonably priced. The staff were very attentive and professional. Our room was lovely, breakfast was well cooked and plentiful and as for the afternoon tea it was most enjoyable. I would recommend this hotel to everyone and can't wait to return. Well done management and staff and thank you for making our time with you so lovely.

Stayed from Sunday to Wednesday on a b and b basis and overall enjoyed the stay.
Covid precautions were good with sanitiser everywhere, masks to be worn unless eating or drinking in the hotel and staff asking for details for track and trace. However, at breakfast there was a buffet for the cold food so everybody was handling the fruit juice and toaster.
Cooked breakfast was good and we ate in restaurant on two nights. The food was very good, although the poor service on the one night took the edge off the experience. However the staff did the right thing and recognised this and gave us the meal on the house.
We paid extra to upgrade the room which was a good size clean and comfortable. Only negatives were the lack of lighting in the bathroom and no towel rails. Note that there is no lift so it was a bit of a trek up to the 3rd floor!
We had no problems with the car parking as there was always a space.
The hotel has a fantastic position overlooking the meadows with access to plenty of walking, and the roof terrace was great to have a drink whilst watching the sunset.
