Milltown House is the landmark property on beautiful Dingle Harbour. 10 charming bedrooms in Boutique-Hotel style, with a cosy bar and Seamus - our gentle-giant Irish Wolfhound. Once home to Hollywood Star, Robert Mitchum, during the 1969 filming of Oscar-winning movie 'Ryans Daughter'... Unrivalled and breathtaking seaviews. Owned by Ireland's leading tour-guide Stephen McPhilemy and Irish-American Patrick Wade, historic Milltown House was Dingle's first B&B and has won many awards for our unique Irish Hospitality.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.

I recently stayed at the Milltown House as part of a tour conducted by the owner, Stephen McPhilemy. We stayed 3 delightful nights in this charming and historic home. I was familiar with the movie Ryan’s Daughter and was enchanted by it being the home of Robert Mitchum while filming the movie. Lots of memorabilia adorned the walls in addition to other items of Irish history, The room I stayed in was spacious with amentities like water and a Nespresso machine. They had recently updated the bathrooms with modern walk-in showers and heated towel racks. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and I slept well. That could also have been helped by the cozy bar where guest gathered at nights with some chatting and singing and a wee whiskey! Breakfasts were served in the sunroom and had a large variety of items to choose from. The mini croissants that were part of the buffet rivaled any I had in Paris. There were several sitting rooms where you could relax as well. All the staf were very friendly and helpful and Seamus the Irish Wolfhound was happy to greet you. You can also have a falconry experience through their partnership with Kingdom Falconry on their property for a fee. Our group all enjoyed it. The guesthouse is a short walk to town and the Dingle Distillery is next door where you can tour and taste their gin and whiskey. For a relaxed , feel at home experience I recommned spending a few days here while exploring the Dingle Peninsula.

The Milltown House is a beautiful property located just minute by foot from the idyllic little town of Dingle. The property itself is very large and sits on a beautiful little bay. The rooms are large and well appointed- it’s an older property and is very authentic and charming. The property owner is a well know Ireland tour guide and so if you have a question, he will have the answer. He’s very friendly and loves talking with fellow travelers. The whole staff is very friendly and helpful. We only stayed for two nights but could easily have stayed for a very relaxing week. Dingle is located in a very beautiful part of Ireland, away from the big cities but loaded with Irish charm. Would highly recommend a visit to Dingle and the Milltown House!

Our stay in one of the cosy, charming chalets was a delight from start to finish. Exceptional value, wonderful staff, a prime location, and a delightful breakfast... I’m running out of superlatives, but every one of them is truly well-deserved. We booked on a whim after spotting it on a booking website during an impromptu road trip. Oddly, the room we wanted was showing as unavailable on their own website, and unfortunatly we couldn’t reach anyone by phone. We usually prefer booking directly to help save our hardworking hoteliers from the hefty 20% commission charged by the greedy booking giants.
The only tiny dampener on an otherwise perfect experience was the bar prices—€20 for a pint and a G&T, which feels more like Temple Bar pricing! That said, the drinks delicious, were served ice cold, by a great staff member and in a wonderfully cosy atmosphere, complete with a friendly Irish wolfhound — a touch of charm you certainly won’t find on Fleet Street.
Overall, this place is a gem. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it—go ahead and book; you won’t be disappointed.

This is a well run B & B on the outskirts of Dingle, about 15 mins walk/5 mins drive. Well sized rooms with upgraded bathrooms, a good stop for anyone touring the area. The location is great, and Seamus the Irish wolfhound is fantastic! Breakfast was good with well sourced local ingredients

We booked one night at Milltown House because our preferred location was booked for the last night of our stay in Dingle. The reviews for Milltown were extremely good, so we booked the night and considered ourselves lucky. Having stayed there, however, I have to agree with reviewers who say Milltown House is overrated and over-priced. The building itself is adequate but shabby and in need of updating. The rooms were perfectly fine, but I expected far better, considering the reviews. We were greeted by a very affable fellow who essentially handed us our key and pointed up the stairs to our room. No tour of the facility, no offer to help with our bags, no explanation about wifi. The door to our bathroom was so badly stuck closed we at first thought we didn't have a private toilet; but I was relieved to find one when I put my elbow to the door. The grounds are shabby at best, with rubbish and construction materials stacked up within plain sight of guests. There was even a torso-shaped punching bag lying on its side! People have remarked on the Irish Wolfhounds, which seem to be a signature feature of the inn. Being dog lovers, we were delighted by these gentle giants, but not so charmed by the HUGE piles of dog poop all over the grass by the driveway (at least five that we saw). Finally, I have noticed that the inn owner solicits reviews but then responds defensively to negative remarks, accusing guests of being too picky or rationalizing the inn's deficiencies as part of its rustic charm. Doing so is extremely bad form for someone in the hospitality industry. By comparison, we stayed at Benners in Dingle for our first four nights and absolutely loved it. The place cost less and had far better accommodations, service, and dining/drinking options. Benners isn't perfect either, but they do a wonderful job and don't, as far as I can tell, berate reviewers for disagreeing with them!

Response from Milltown House Dingle, Owner at Milltown House
Responded May 25, 2023
Dear “James H”. Genuinely sorry to read Milltown House was not for you, the reviews from other guests on the same date were all excellent (I think its fair to point that out) and we were unaware you had so many dislikes. As you said yourself, you only booked a night with us reluctantly because your first choice in Dingle was booked out, so I don’t think we ever really stood a chance of you also loving our beloved Milltown House. ** I must confess I had a little chuckle to myself when you mentioned the “torso-shaped punching bag” that is stored in our Wolfhound enclosure. Apart from you noticing it behind a 5 foot wall, it could not possibly have impacted your stay in any way, but I’ll explain nevertheless - I purchased the “torso-shaped punchbag” during lockdown, hoping to become the next Tyson Fury, but alas I never even went 12 rounds with it, and for nigh on 2 summers my darling wife has been berating me to get rid of it: your negative review has inspired me to make the decision to say goodbye to it, my wife thanks you for that. ** You’re correct that I don’t enjoy people who grump or complain a lot, for better or for worse thats just me. I’m 47 now so I doubt I’d be able to change. As a professional tour-guide I’ve stayed at almost every 5 star hotel in Ireland. I’ve found faults in them all, but unless it’s a very serious thing I don’t complain (unless I also acknowledge the positives), life is too short. Your review highlighted zero positives for future guests reading it. No mention of our glorious waterfront location, our ‘Robert Mitchum’ bar, our award-winning school of Falconry. When travelling, I prefer to look for the positives than the negatives. I think in fairness when someone has devoted 10 years of life to warmly welcoming guests on Dingle Harbour, perhaps they can be forgiven a little for verbally defending their business. Our business is our baby, our passion. At the same time, if the overwhelming majority of guests absolutely love Milltown House but you do not, it is not beyond the scope of rational behaviour for me to politely remind you of that truth. On the night you stayed with us, all the other guests gave Milltown House a 5 star review. We are proud to have 628 ‘Excellent’ reviews, and regrettably we have 7 ‘terrible’ reviews. One day I hope we will reach a stage where we will never receive a bad review. But that day may never come, so we just focus on doing our best to keep the vast majority of guests happy. By interesting coincidence, yesterday we again won a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the BestAward, it is for hotels that are “ranked in the top 1% of properties worldwide”. I respectfully disagree that we are over-priced. You chose to pay it. Almost 20% of the price you paid went to Expedia, a $billion corporation. Another 9% went on VAT tax, and another good chunk on other taxes and rising costs. Also, If you had stayed with us in February, the average room price was €75, in summer it is double, at weekends sometimes triple (you stayed on a Friday night), in darkest November when all the foreign tourists have gone but my costs are even higher, you can stay with us for two-thirds less than you paid in May, our prices change according to demand - that’s perfectly normal business practise. Milltown House will always have improvements to make, it can always be better, I assure you we already know that. We are presently finishing up €90,000 of structural improvements, renovations and garden-landscaping (you complained about that too), we invest every hard-earned cent back into the business, and we are so so lucky to be blessed with very loyal guests, both Irish and international, who absolutely love Milltown House, give us glowing Tripadvisor reviews and cant wait to return time after time. Unfortunately for my hard-working team and I, you are not one of them. Thats a pity. Anyway, we wish you well and thank you for staying with us. Safe travels Stephen McPhilemy Host and Owner Ps you’re absolutely right about the “5 dog poops” you claim to have spotted at the bottom of the driveway. I’ll chat to the team about this and we’ll re-double our efforts to remove all dog-poops daily around our 1 acre of lawns. Our gentle-giant Irish Wolfhounds, Seamus and Ogie, are the size of small ponies, so you’ll appreciate scooping their poop is not exactly an easy task, or a favourite one. I do it myself most days, but I literally cant keep up with them.

Beautiful location on Dingle Bay. We received a warm welcome from Aoife who showed us to our room. The hotel has character and our spacious room had every convenience while retaining its unique old character. The large bathroom had a good over the bath shower with plenty of hot water. The beautiful little bar downstairs was well stocked and inviting and enabled one to chat with fellow guests, if so desired. Aoife ran the bar also and had loads of local knowledge. The lounge had comfortable couches, a roaring stove fire and easy to relax in after a day’s touring. The location is ideal as it’s just a shot walk into Dingle for dinner and then you can it walk off on the return journey. No fighting with traffic or searching for parking. The chú faoil added another dimension and were gentle giants - a great hit with young and old alike. There was a good choice for breakfast and served by the delightful Niamh who was calm and serene even when the conservatory breakfast room was very busy. She still managed to chat and offer tour tips for the area. All the other staff encountered were warm and friendly too. We felt it was good value too. Don’t miss the Blasket Island Centre - Well worth the €4 senior rate. Give it enough time and savour the experience. Our thanks to all at Milltown House for very enjoyable few days and we’ll be back before too long, hopefully.

The location is good, the bed comfortable and good linen . Whilst I appreciate that the owner has invested in the property based on his responses to other reviews the house needs serious investment if he wishes to continue to charge the prices he does. the interiors are seriously dated - the bathrooms have not been upgraded for many years - even older houses need updating. I have been coming to Dingle annually for over 15 years and this is the worst value place I have stayed in . Almost 300 euros a night is too much for what is on offer. I would have stayed elsewhere but I booked late and this was all that was available. I thought it would be much better based on the review.

Response from Milltown House Dingle, Owner at Milltown House

Thank you for staying with us and for your kind words regarding our great location on Dingle Harbour, our comfortable beds and the good linen. I agree our bathrooms need a good upgrade and we have already made plans for this (although I'm confident that for this season our bathrooms are presently still very functional and sparkling clean) . We have a complete bathroom upgrade and rebuild booked for November, the end of our season. Half of Ireland is upgrading bathrooms right now it seems and finding a company who will come all the way out to Dingle to replace bathrooms was no easy task. The projected cost of replacing all our bathrooms is €200,000. A sum of money that size is not easily earned by a small ten bedroom guesthouse, I can assure you, its around half of our annual revenue, but we are more than happy to reinvest in our historic and much-loved property to make sure the guest experience is the best it can be. To pay for these important upgrades, cover rising costs, make a small profit and continue to pay our hard-working staff a fair salary, our prices and room-rates will remain as they are in peak season and decrease in the off-season. For example, your room in February or November will cost you €75. And those months are also great times to visit magical Dingle, as is clear from the abundance of glowing and 5 star reviews Milltown House receives. Best wishes to you and safe travels Stephen Milltown House

Convenient to the sites and pubs of Dingle The Milltown House is situated in a quiet spot overlooking the water. We enjoyed watching the sunrise over town as we ate a hearty Irish breakfast. The staff is friendly and helpful. I recommend the gin and tonic in the bar.

Just stumbled on this lovely hotel/B&B while looking the day before for lodging in Dingle. So happy we did. Our room, the Robert Mitchum room, had a beautiful sea view with a multi-windowed seating area. The owner and staff were extremely welcoming, kind and helpful. It was apparent their goal is make their guests comfortable and offer them a quality experience. They brought breakfast to our room so we could gently wake up in our seating area while taking in the view and watching their massive gentle giant wolfhounds enjoy the lawn. The same lawn on which we would later watch the handlers fly the falcons. Beautiful accommodations, beautiful people. We would definitely return to stay here and would have loved to have been able to stay more than our two nights. They say Robert Mitchum lived there for a year. I can see why.

This was our second visit to this hotel we stayed here for a Saturday evening, about a 10 minute walk from Dingle so ideal location, we stayed in room 7 which was nice and spacious with great views of Dingle and the sea. I had only one issue and that is breakfast, served between 9 and 9.30, thats a bit of a short window. Also the service at Breakfast was poor, offered no toast and the portions are basic and small, apart from that a great p[lace to stay.

Greetings from Milltown House
I’m afraid we are NOT able to welcome dogs anymore.
Our Irish Wolfhound pack has grown to 3 and it is too difficult and distracting to make sure all our canine friends get along together.
We hope to have specialist dog-friendly seaview suites built in 2020
