We had a wonderful week staying at the Chalet at Rock Cottage. What a wonderful location, right down a hidden track leading to spacious and beautifully kept grounds. And then the chalet itself, round the side of one of the houses, with a private patio looking onto one of the horse fields. We loved fussing the ponies each morning and evening as they came nuzzling for carrot and apple treats. The chalet itself was comfortable and well-kitted out for our stay, fresh flowers and eggs (thank you) a nice welcome. The kitchenette was handy, allowing us to cook for ourselves on a few evenings. The shower was amazing and hot, and the bed very comfy. It was so peaceful and quiet there that we left feeling very relaxed and refreshed. Our host Jackie was very friendly and welcoming but not intrusive and left us to enjoy our stay. The grounds are beautiful and the myriad of animals, chickens, dogs, ponies, donkeys, make for a fab experience. Also pleased to note almost everything is recycled in one way or another, a great touch. Thanks for a lovely stay. Sarah and Derek

So pretty on the outside and cosy and comfortable inside - surrounded by a lovely garden and walking areas. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and we loved every minute, even in the pouring rain! Very well situated for exploring the Mizzen and Sheep's Head Peninsulars, and for great places to eat and drink. Perfect for a couple, and the glamping chalet looked gorgeous too. Maybe some new towels would be good, but otherwise this is a perfect holiday cottage.

Rock cottage is a dream of a place to stay. It's location is peaceful and the cottage itself is immaculate and comfortable - a home from home. The surrounding countryside is ideal for relaxing or walking. The nearest shop/pub is ten minutes away and there are some great views of the Atlantic but you need a car. The cottage is set in acres of fields and is great for a retreat - it would be easy to spend a week here without leaving the property!

We stayed at Rock Cottage in May, 2003. Overall, it was a good experience. However, having stayed at the Fortview a couple of miles down the road the day before, it seemed to be second class. One difficulty is the limited check-in time which is only 4-6 pm. We had originally planned to tour Sheep's head peninsula that afternoon, however had to abort plans to get to the Rock Cottage before 6. Barbara Klotzer was cordial however not overly welcoming. She is evidently renowned for her dinners, however you have to make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance, too soon for us to make a decision not having arrived in the area yet.The rooms were clean although somewhat plain and conservative. Breakfast was excellent, but again not nearly as comprehensive or tasty as Violet's at Fortview.Overall it is nice, but not nearly as good as Fortview which is right down the road.

Response from Barbaraklotzer, Owner at Rock Cottage Country House
Responded Nov 11, 2009
The reviewer would have been most welcome to drop off luggage and collect their keys in the morning ( even though we wouldn't have the room ready until later)and would then have been free to return at any time preferred. Between Fortview and here we operate this quite frequently. You only had to ask either Violet or myself. A B&B offering an evening meal is not a Restaurant, where you can expect to be catered for unannounced. We cook to order only and solely for our residents and have a high standard of using only fresh local produce. This makes an advance order necessary

Spent a week here during one of those mixed weather summer weeks we have in Ireland which did not matter at all as this house is a joy to stay in. Although it is a short distance from Schull I can say that it was not a problem at all, in fact I would not have it any other way. It is a place where you can forget about life sit back and relax with no worries. The house is lovely with all mod cons, in one of the most beautiful country settings, you could not wish for better. Jackie and Johnny who own the place are wonderful hosts and live close to hand. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy life, this is a must.

A beautiful house in an amazing setting. I had read reviews so knew what to expect about the owner. Whilst she has lived in Ireland for many years she still had a rather fierce streak to her and a rather odd cork/German accent. However, the room was small but nicely furnished but the bed and pillows were so uncomfortable I hardly slept a wink. Fortunately the breakfast was lovely with great local produce. I would advise you to organise dinner as the nearest place to eat out is a good 20 mins away and not that good. The grounds are beautiful with views to die for, loved all the animals; donkeys, cats, dogs, chicken and geese!

The scenery is unbelievable....catch the sunset from the hill behind the house. Maxie the Sheep dog is adorable, the cats, the dogs, the donkey, and the horse were as welcoming as the hostess. The hostess is German and if you have never been around Germans you might find her a little stand offish, but we found her pleasant and accomadating. Her love of animals is obvious and the house is beautiful, decorated with modern art and extremely clean. Our room was wonderful and had a beautiful view of the sheep in the pasture. The walk behind the house is something not to be missed, especially at sunset. If you are looking for a place with lots of activity skip the Rock Cottage, but if you want a quiet location for wandering and reading....this is your place. While there don't miss the drive to Mizen Head and the drive around Sheep Head Way....caution the roads are extremely narrow since it is SW Cork and not has heavily visited as other areas of Ireland. We loved it.

The place is better than expected. The cottage was spacious, clean and had all the necessities. Great green outdoor space to sit, read and have a cup of tea. Very quiet day and night. They grow vegetables and herbs, and there are plenty of wild blackberries to pick. The land is 17acres big!!! and in the back of the property they have opened a nice walking path to walk up the hill and catch a nice view of the areas including a view of the sea. Most of all the hosts Jackie and Jonathan are very friendly and welcoming.

We spent 5 days at Rock Cottage last Easter. The weather was terrible so the accommodations were really put to the test. We couldn’t have been more satisfied with the place and the hostess! The Cottage is beautiful, stocked with everything you might possibly need, and very comfortable. The estate and the surroundings where quite spectacular, and provided an excellent base for exploring a beautiful part of Ireland. We found our hostess, Jackie, to be very pleasant, helpful and generous. We will definitely come back, hopefully next time in better weather!

just spent a week here. we loved it. our host, Jacqueline Sarsfield, was wonderful. This is a self catering cottage, (bedding and towels are provided), and has a kitchen, so money can be saved if desired, by cooking some meals. The fireplace was nice. we used it every night.
this is a great location to explore Mizen head, sheeps head, and the Beara peninsulas, as well as Bantry and Garnish Island. and it is perfect if your in the area for the FastNet film festival.
would definitely return here if in west cork again.
