What an absolute disappointment. After spending some time in the Connemara Coast Hotel we headed to Athlone to spend a couple of nights in the Hodson Bay. What a contrast. Check in was poor. Four staff at the desk chatting. The first thing we were asked was to pay our bill upfront. No problem with that but then no explanation of the hotel - and where to find everything. No outline of the hotel protocols for Covid. We were given a photocopied (poorly) one page on the hotel protocols. We booked a Retreat Deluxe Room with a Lake View. A nice size room but it was scruffy. The carpet was stained and the skirting board behind the door was covered in dust and dirt. We found a biscuit wrapper under the bed and a empty plastic bottle being used to keep one of the windows ajar. There was no kettle/tea making facilities in the room (was this a Covid measure - we are still wondering as there was no reference to it in the one page hotel protocols ?). We ate in the bar and having ordered a chowder with gluten free bread as a starter, I was brought it with ordinary bread. I returned it and when it was returned, I did have gluten free bread which had only been half thawed from the freezer. The main course was chicken on a big dollop of mash and two stems of broccoli. Not exactly haute cuisine. One of my gripes is being asked by staff in a bar/restaurant is everything okay. This hotel set the record - we are asked three times in two minutes by staff in the bar. It was like staff all had only been half trained and poorly so. It didn't get any better at breakfast. There was no one at the podium greeting guests and two staff walked by as we queued (in a growing queue) and neither acknowledged us or got someone to look after us. The positives - nice location on the Shannon and the proximity to Athlone, where we got a lovely meal the following night.

Had a long awaited weekend away 13th August. 2 nights B&B and we chose to eat in the Bar and in the Restaurant. The whole stay from start to finish was FAB! We stayed in a newly refurbished family room up on the top floor. This room was stylish and roomy, with a double bed and two singles there was more than enough room for my two friends and me. The bathroom was gorgeous, again recently redone it had a massive shower and a bath. With a good size vanity unit and mirror. Plenty of room for three of us to do our make up. A walk in wardrobe provided plenty of space for all of us to hang our bits and pieces and no fighting for hangers. The atmosphere in the bar was relaxing and cosy, despite covid restrictions. The bar staff went above and beyond attentive and the food was delicious, hot and plenty of it. But most important it was top quality local produce. Saturday herald a trip to the spa and again despite covid restrictions, it was lovely. A cuppa tea overlooking the beautiful view of the water finished off a lovely afternoon. On the second night, we went to the restaurant and again I was blown away by the standards of food quality and services. The restaurant has a very chic Parisenne feel which I loved, I really felt it was a special night out. Hodson Bay has quickly become my go-to favourites hotel and I would heartily recommend it from a family holiday to a couples getaway to a girls weekend. It covers all events. The staff try hard to make your stay one to remember and I for one can't wait to return.

Really would not recommend this hotel, our room was quite nice it seems there are some refurbished rooms in the hotel but that was it. They have a covid seal on the door of the room but the disposable coffee cups left for us had been used. The bar was awful, they have a very, very limited wine menu and the food is as if someone bought it from the freezer in the supermarket. The service is also terrible, waited 45 minutes for a drink, tried to cancel and told we couldn't because the drinks were already ready we were then charged for a bottle of wine when we had only ordered 2 glasses. My biggest gripe was that we booked the hotel so that we could go to BaySports which by the way was great and because the hotel advertises a kids club. The Kids Club was dire to say the least, I have never come across anything as badly put together for children. We told our daughter she could ask them to call us if she wasn't enjoying it and mentioned this to the staff when we left her in, she asked them to call us to collect her and they refused to and were not at all kind to her. She was very upset afterwards. They have teenagers who have zero interest in being there supervising in the room. There were no activities, they had a 14 year old Disney movie on for them to watch. Children all had to be quiet and were not allowed talk to each other or play with toys. Teenagers supervising aren't at all suited to the work Breakfast was awful, booked a slot for 10.30 but waited for 30 minutes seems to be standard. No slots available for the swimming pool 40 hours before check in. Really poor family experience would not return even it were free. Checked in online to avail of Key Collection service which doesn't actually exist, you still need to queue for reception which took about half an hour in our instance.

Stayed here last weekend. It’s a horrible hotel, very factory like, push the guests through, que”s everywhere. They hammer the COVID message throughout when maybe they should focus their efforts on cleaning. To sum up the cleaning the hand sanitizer dispenser in one of the lifts was filthy!!! We booked 2 rooms 2 adults and 3 children and we got 4 beds, we called down to explain to reception and we are still waiting on the call back. The bedrooms are a joke, they need serious investment and very dirty. Breakfast in line with everything else in the hotel. Very very disappointed to say the least.

This is a lovely hotel. The room in the hotel was really large with a double bed and two singles (photo). Unfortunately it was like the room wasn't cleaned properly as there was a tissue under the bed along with bits of paper (photo). There was a glasses case left behind obviously from the previous guest. There was a mark on one of the towels in the toilet. Once I noted reception, the duty manager rang my phone. He was very apologetic and left some treats in the room to apologise for what had happened. This was a nice touch. The staff were very friendly. The breakfast was lovely with a great selection. The beds were very comfortable. It is obviously a very child friendly hotel which is great. The spa was fantastic and the therapist I has called Charlene was wonderful. The view from the room was beautiful too (photo).
