I spent a night at Sugar Ridge and wish I had booked a few extra nights because it was just so peaceful and wonderful. There wasn't any yoga planned while I was there but the yoga room looked amazing and I plan on returning to do an actual retreat. The cabin was super comfortable and it was surrounded by trees and flowers. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly and as someone who deals with anxiety never once felt anxious about making myself at home. I really enjoyed the vegan breakfast (and I'm not vegan) and the icing on the cake was the two pups who welcomed me when I arrived. I definitely plan on going back in the spring for a week long retreat. Thank you to sugar ridge for letting me experience a stress free and anxiety free two days.

I knew I would enjoy this weekend as I did a one day worship with Liz back in June. I can’t say enough about how much more I learned from Liz: about how to grow my fledgling practice of medication and to more mindfully approach yoga poses. The vegan cuisine (note I am not historically vegan!) was delightfully yummy. The cabins are cozy, the setting is peaceful and pretty (think wildflowers, birds and
butterflies) and everything was planned with social distancing and cleanliness in mind. Also met some sweet and engaging people. And of course Eddie and Oliver 🐾🐾 who truly rule the roost. I plan to return. 🙏😊

Thanks so much for your kind words. A couple typos made me giggle - I think you meant a workshop in June (not worship:) and meditation rather than medication:) I don't teach anything about medication and no worshiping happens here - LOL! I do love what I do and am happy to share all that I know. I'm glad it was helpful for you and I look forward to hearign about how your practice evolves. Eddie and Oliver are usually a fun part of everyone's stay - so glad you enjoyed the boys (dogs that is). Much love, Liz

My husband and I spent two nights at Sugar Ridge. What a great place to recharge! The room was lovely and comfortable. The facilities were well visually pleasing, clean, and we had everything we needed. All meals were provided. I eat a whole foods plant based diet with additional restrictions for allergies, and the staff was happy to accommodate my needs. The surroundings were lovely, with lots of different hiking paths to choose from. Other people attending were friendly, and we enjoyed conversation in the common room and during meals. We found quiet places indoors as well as outdoors. My husband loved the library. I would highly recommend Sugar Ridge. This is the second time we have gone there, and I'm sure we'll be back again.

I attended a 5 day Silent Retreat in January. It was very refreshing to get out of the city and enjoy a wooded country property in midwinter. The cabins are simple, comfortable, cozy. The bathrooms and private stall showers (nice hot water and great water pressure) are located a short walk away in the clean, modern Main Centre. Here we received delicious (and plentiful) vegan meals in the common dining room, meditated in a circular hall, and sat quietly in a lounge area with a wood fireplace. Several meditation sessions are offered throughout the day, and I did not feel judged for choosing to attend perhaps 50-75% of these. In that sense, while there is a schedule, I felt my personal agency was respected. I very much enjoyed trudging around the forested property and walking the county roads. I have already booked a summer session and look forward to a new experience amongst the leaves.

I feel there could be improvement around issues of accessibility for older guests and the physically challenged, particularly in the snowy months. With some creative thinking - perhaps a cabin set aside with some type of specialized ‘accessibility path’ to the Main Center - the space might be more inviting to guests who would otherwise be unable to navigate their way.

All in all, an absolutely wonderful retreat. Can’t wait to return.

If you’re looking for a place to get away from it all, and to recover from lockdown in the city, this is the place to be. The vegetarian food is delicious (3 meals and snacks included in our retreat), the cosy, clean cabins are comfortable, the forests are perfect for quiet walks and forest bathing, and the atmosphere of the whole property is totally relaxing and decompressing. As a nature lover, it was great to just sit, relax and listen to the birds. You can be as active or as relaxed as you’d like to be. We felt very fortunate to have had our own customized meditation and yoga program guided by Liz. We learned a great deal and are able to carry what we learned back into our busy lives with a much refreshed attitude. The yoga studio is beautiful and peaceful - airy with lots of natural light. Washrooms are clean and we’re about a minute walk to the building.

Sugar Ridge is a really special place. Spent 2 nights as a quick last minute solo getaway - from the moment I submitted my booking, Liz and her staff were amazingly helpful and friendly. Got some much needed rest in my simple but very comfortable cottage and was blown away by the delicious vegetarian food. The extensive precautions to ensure appropriate distancing during the pandemic also definitely made me feel comfortable. The setting is truly beautiful and I was thankful to be able to explore the many hiking trails around the resort and take a bike ride down to Balm Beach. Highly restorative! I recommend Sugar Ridge to anyone looking for a similar experience.

Well, in my usual way I arrived to my workshop late and was greeted at the door by staff who were so kind, calming, got me a hot cup of tea, reassured me all was good and sent me into my workshop with a sense of belonging and peace. It was the best welcome I have ever received!
The food provided was world class, amazing, nourishing and plenty of it!
The centre itself was spotless. Covid protocols were being adhered to yet it didn't feel stressful or pronounced, the atmosphere was still very laid back and peaceful.
Staff were fantastic, the workshop was game changing and the whole day was a gift.
If you get a chance to hang out with Oliver, he is the cherry on top!!
I am going back again next month and can't wait!!!

Your note made me ☺ I'm so glad we were able to take the stress out of rushing to a retreat (that's so funny!). Oliver is definitely a sweet part of being here (he's one of the Sugar Ridge pooches who thinks every guest is here for him). Glad you enjoyed your time here - I look forward to hosting you when you need to relax again and ditch some stress. Liz

Went for the silent retreat. The location is incredible and very calming. The cabins have what you need however the beds are too firm for my liking. The room for meditation is wonderful and has all the items you need. It indicates yoga but there wasn't a single session in the 7 days I was there, which was really disappointing. The food was incredible! Shocking that it was mostly vegan. However they should have the cooks wear hair and beard nets since I found very long hair in 5 meals and one in my mouth which ruined my appetite. Also I found it odd that for breakfast and lunch, the cooks would remove the food immediately after people poured. I arrived 10 min late once and they were packing everything up. I was taught to pour little on your plate to avoid wasting but I had to get used to over pouring because of this. And you never saw the leftovers again so someone was taking it home. The one on one with Liz is definitely something everyone should do. She's brilliant. Theres a lovely fire pit and lots of hiking to do. The library has tons of books dedicated to your needs. The silence was serene but be prepared, some attendees don't care. One cook really didnt and I could hear him from the library. Overall a good experience but if they fix these issues, I would definitely return.

Hi Jane Doe, Thanks so much for your feedback. I so appreciate hearing your concerns as well as your praise. It's unfortunate you didn't communicate any concerns to myself or staff while you were here because I could have addressed them during your stay. Like the meal service being too short etc. Your concerns are valid and should have been addressed in the moment. I'm so glad you enjoyed the property and the fire pit, the peace and quiet of the forest. I'm glad your time with me was helpful too. I really care about every guest and am passionate about mindfulness training. Kitchen staff of course are supposed to have their hair tied all the time and I will speak to them about it. It's simply not ok to be finding hair in food. We never serve leftovers but I'm not sure why that was a concern? Meals are prepared fresh and nothing is thrown out so no need to worry about waste if that's the concern. A silent meditation retreat doesn't have yoga classes. Sorry if you were expecting that but no where on the silent retreat description did it say a yoga class would be offered. That was explained on the first day as well when we reviewed the retreat schedule. The open exercise period was time for you to exercise however you want and if yoga is something you want to do than that's the time. Every retreat is a little bit different and although we offer a lot of yoga retreats, a silent meditation retreat is much more focused on introspection. As you mentioned though, not everyone was quiet. It's not something I can control and since we're all adults, it's up to each individual to repect the silence for others. That said, when we're silent, the rest of the world isn't silent around us. Noticing how we respond to different sounds gives us insight into what we pay attention to, how we think, what we filter etc. We had a brand new staff member in the kitchen during that retreat so he had to learn about being in silence - apologies if it felt disruptful to hear his voice. Most people love the beds - mattresses are foam and usually comfy. Sorry you didn't enoy comfortable sleep. Some people complain they're too soft but the majority say they're great. Unfortunately we don't have a variety of options. I don't want you to feel like I'm dismissing any of your concerns, just trying to explain some of it and apologize for other parts of your experience. I created the centre to make a difference in the world and want every guest to leave feeling enriched by their time here. It sounds like that wasn't your experience and for that I am very sorry and disappointed. I will endeavour to do better. Love to you, Liz

I have been to Sugar Ridge twice and intend to make it an annual trip. The juice cleanse retreat is an awesome reset for the body and a great opportunity to meet other amazing people. The food is deliciously plant based, the yoga studio is lovely and Liz, who own the retreat, and the other facilitators are a wealth of knowledge, and go out of their way to accommodate your needs and requests. Can’t wait to go back!

All the facilities were really clean and the cabins were warm during winter. The food was delicious, that is if you are a fan of vegetarian/vegan food. The yoga room was spacious and beautiful. If you are interested in yoga and spirituality you will enjoy their library which has many books related to these topics. I really enjoyed the trails around and the good thing was you just started walking in the trail as soon as you were out of your cabin.
critique: The washrooms were inside the main building and you had to go there every time you had to use the washroom and sometimes the other retreat was there. I didn't personally feel very comfortable or welcome when they were inside the main building. The cabins could have been a little larger to leave the shoes and anything wet in a small corridor and not inside the cabin. The food was very healthy and tasty but the quantity of it wasn't enough and I am a light person.

Hi Shiva, Thanks for taking the time to write a review. I'm glad you enjoyed the natural setting and the studio. I truly enjoyed chatting with you throughout your stay so I'm surprised and confused by your comments i.e. not feeling welcome and not serving adequate portions of food. These are the things most people rave about - how at home they feel and how great the meals are. In fact, the kitchen staff commented on how lovely you were and how you complimented them about the meals. As you know, when you booked your stay, I explained to you that there was a group using the space and due to the covid restrictions in place at the time, your ability to be in the main centre and using the space would be limited and not at all like our normal ambiance. You said you understood that and insisted on coming anyway. Perhaps you felt unwelcome before you arrived because I had to be so clear about what the restrictions meant? When you arrived I met you at the door as I would any other guest (I'm pretty friendly:) and showed you around. I spoke to you several times during your stay, and before you left you sat in my office and chatted casually for about 20 minutes and you were quite complimentary about everything. You even said you wanted to book the centre to bring a group here this summer. Why would you do that if you didn't feel welcome? As for meals; at the time of your stay we were only allowed to have 10 people in the dining room. There was a group of 8 who had rented the centre and you came with a group of 4, which would put us over the legal limit if you were all dining at the same time. We scheduled meal times for you, which you agreed upon, so that your group and the larger group could enjoy meals at different times without conflict, allowing us to clean in between. Because of covid, our kitchen staff have to serve meals rather than our normal buffet style of service. Every guest is welcome to ask for more food and there is always plenty of it. When you were served dinner you chose to take it to your cabin rather than eat in the dining room. Had you stayed, you could have asked for as much as you wanted but you left the building and didn't come back or say anything of concern to the staff. We don't restrict food portions at all and quite happily serve a second and sometimes a third helping. I look forward to hosting your group, hopefully with an ease in restrictions, and you will experience Sugar Ridge in a deeper way. I'm sure your next stay will offer everything you would think a perfect retreat to be:)

Hi! There is no kettle in the cabins but the centre is open 24/7 and you always have access to the tea table here. You can bring a thermal mug or a thermos if you're wanting to keep hot drinks in your cabin. Every cabin has electrical outlets so you can bring a kettle if you want. We always make coffee with breakfast but we're happy to make it later in the day if you want it. Cheers, Liz
