Standing prominently on the eastern shores of the Barra Strait on the Bras d'Or Lakes, this grand three storey structure (Second Empire) was built as an elegant 15 bedroom hotel in 1887. With large gathering rooms, two full-length verandas, spacious bedrooms, and a grand winding staircase. It features the privacy and space of a hotel with the added touch of a friendly rural B&B. Our location on a large beachfront property ensures that guests can enjoy swimming in the clean, crystal waters of Bras d'Or, the largest and most beautiful salt-water lake in the world. Stroll down a quiet country road that hugs the shoreline where two natural marshes provide shelter to an abundance of birds and other wildlife. Watch the eagles soar overhead, and enjoy still summer evenings on the front veranda with breathtaking sunsets over the hills of Iona. The Barra Strait Marina and Wheelhouse Café are only a few steps away, which adds to the charm of Grand Narrows. The Grand Narrows Hotel B&B is conveniently located in Central Cape Breton, making it the ideal base for travelling to many of the island's destinations, such as the Highland Village Museum, The Cabot Trail, Fortress of Louisbourg, numerous golf courses, and more. The Grand Narrows Hotel B&B was built to coincide with the new Inter-colonial Railway and accommodated passengers from both rail and ferry. The hotel's historic guest registers boast the names of many prosperous and distinguished people, including: Alexander Graham Bell, Sir Charles Tupper, U.S. Presidents Cleveland, Roosevelt and Taft, and many other leaders of industry. Our accommodations include four renovated rooms with private baths, three with queen bed and one with a double. The hotel still offers the same enchanting setting that it once did more than 100 years ago. Breakfast is included. Available for weddings, rehearsal parties, family reunions, and special events. Hotel guests included Alexander Graham Bell, King George VI, Sir Charles Tupper, Lord Stanley,Teddy Roosevelt, William H. Taft and Grover Cleveland and many others. Only 4hrs. from Halifax.

My wife and I rented this place for our wedding in Aug ‘19, and when we arrived we found that the caretakers has set-up a large camper trailer and parked two vehicles on the lawn. When I asked if they could move their vehicles for our wedding day (as my wife had spent months planning our wedding on the lawn where they were now camping), one of them (Elaine) became very angry and threatened to cancel our reservation. After I walked away and returned to my family who was already inside, Elaine entered the property without consent and began yelling insults at me in front of young children. We then contacted the property manager, and the caretakers were told to move their vehicles from the lawn, but the incident was very stressful for my family and I didn’t feel safe in the property. I think they should update the pictures on their website to show a camper trailer and vehicles parked on the lawn so that customers know what they’re buying.

Our Family (12 in total ranging from the age of 2 to ...almost senior) chose the Grand Narrows Hotel for our trip and we all loved it. The Hotel had its heydays way back in the mid 1900's and has been a private home for several years now. It has been been restored beautifully and the old, wide, sturdy and solid wood staircase is beautiful. The bedrooms are spacious and have their own ensuite. The veranda is an awesome place to just relax, have a drink (or two..or three) look out in the lake (Bras D'Or Lake is a salt water lake) or take a nap. The kitchen and dining room as well as the large parlour room are spacious, well decorated and very clean. Terry and Elaine, the owners, were fantastic hosts. They live next to the hotel and were always ready to help and provide the full history of this Grand Narrows landmark. Grandchildren (5) loved the various hiding places....so, "hide and seek" was almost a daily game. If our travels take us back to Cape Breton...we will definitely stay at the Grand Narrows Hotel (aka...The MacNeils' house) All Cape Breton attractions were anywhere from 7 minutes (Heritage Village) to an hour (Cabot Trail, Fort Louisburg, town of Baddeck, Sydney, Igonish beach, etc..etc..) Mr Bell, yes Mr Graham Bell himself stayed there many a times on his travels to Cape Breton.

This hotel is a hidden gem with a remarkable history and many eminent past guests. The idyllic setting is beautiful and serene, but centrally located, with many of Cape Breton's major attractions accessible within a maximum hour and a quarter drive. Rooms are clean and comfortable, with high ceilings and wood floors. Our bathroom was enormous, with a claw foot tub that included a shower. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, and included fresh eggs from the hotel's contented chickens. Terry and Elaine obviously have worked extremely diligently to preserve this incredible link to the past. We enjoyed their friendly hospitality and their fascinating stories about the hotel and its rebirth.

We arrived when the staff were in town so found the nice note they left for us that said to make ourselves at home. We went for dinner and when we returned (around 8 pm) still there was no one at the desk or in the back. We left our own note that said we would be awake so if they found it they could come to our room and that we had to leave early the next morning - no one came. The room was nice and what we needed to stay the night but it would have been nice to meet the staff. The hotel is also beautifully located on the lake but it was too bad it was raining.

A beautiful historic building in beautiful spot. Charming folk architecture in the original, restored with great care. Elaine and Terry are wonderful, knowledgeable, cordial hosts. Possibly the best front porch in all of Cape Breton to watch the sunset.
