My husband and I were driving from Salinas up to Montañita and were charmed by this lovely little pueblo.
Just a few minutes south of Montañita we saw Carlos y Monica's hosteria from the main road and when they showed us our room we melted. Just what we were looking for. Not too touristy, quiet, charming, and out our window it felt like you could touch the water. It was truly a little piece of heaven and we loved every second of our stay. Carlos, his wife Monica, and hermanos, Juan y Rosendo, made us feel like their special guests, and very much at home. It is a short 10 minute or less drive to Montañita and we were happy to be staying off of the beaten path. Highly recommended for a great value with a lot of charm, right on the beach!

This familiar hostel is located in an amazing place, waking up and having the sea in front of you is the best thing you can have. The rooms are comfortable and the food is great! Also, there are many water activities you can practice with the material offered in the place and close to Libertador Bolivar the're nice places to visit!

The restaurant and full-service bar of La Casa del Sombrero are only steps away from the surf and sand and there’s nothing better than sipping a refreshing cocktail while watching one of the spectacular sunsets that happen regularly here. You won’t be disappointed with Casa del Sombrero’s $4.25 cuba libre or a pina colada, $5.75, while using the free wifi to check your email, or simply watch the surfers or beach football from a hammock on the balcony in front of your room as the sun goes down.

Casa del Sombrero is a reasonably priced hosteria in the relatively unknown beach town of Libertador Bolivar on the southern coast of Ecuador. It’s only an hour away from the port city of Santa Elena to the south, or twenty minutes away from Montanita to the north. A room for a family of 4 is only $18 pp: a private double is $40 and all of the rates include breakfast, use of hammocks, body surfboards, and beach umbrellas. It’s well worth the money and la Casa del Sombrero has the absolute best bolon of any I’ve eaten in Ecuador or Galapagos. Truly, your Ecuadorian vacation wouldn’t be complete without this traditional breakfast staple offered in most restaurants and the common denominator of most street vendor fare. The bolon here at La Casa del Sombrero is particularly fantastic, not too dry as some places serve them, but deliciously moist banana with a dollop of queso in the middle, and just crispy enough on the outside to savor every bit along with a steaming cup of dark Ecuadorian coffee to wash it all down.

At La Casa del Sombrero the hospitality is rooted in comida y buen provecho. Ecuadorian cuisine is at the heart of life at Casa del Sombrero and the main ingredient here is love, as vital and as healthful as all the native ingredients and herbs and spices and oils used to flavor traditional Ecuadorian cooking. The food and all ingredients are one-hundred percent fresh, and anything fritas is done so in fresh, clean olive oil, seasoned to taste and cooked to perfection. The salads are made from crisp fresh lechuga, pimientos, cebollas y pepinos and lightly seasoned with lime juice, herbs and spices to taste. The secret of their success is love, and this is evident in the presentation of both the food and the service and hospitality at la Casa del Sombrero. Monica is an organized, clean chef whose cocina is an impressive mix of attentiveness to detail, creative menu choices, and high-standards of cleanliness and food safety in preparing, cooking, and serving the dishes. The food selections are both traditional and exotic and range in prices from $6.50 Ceviche de pescado or Pescado al ajillo to Piqueos de mariscos for $12.00. Ensalada de camaron and Ensalada de pulpo are $8.25 and $8.50.

While the food is impressive the hospitality is also worthy of mention. Owners Carlos and Monica are warm and friendly hosts and easily accessible to all of their guests and friends. La Casa del Sombrero is an attractive place to stay, easy to find, and close enough to Guayaquil so that it’s possible to catch a bus (very cheap) to spend a few days here on the beach on the way to Galapagos, or returning from Batra to the mainland. While it’s entirely possible to see a bus of tourists pull up to the cantina for lunch, La Casa del Sombrero is really off the beaten-path of the mainstream tourist track. This is the perfect place to recharge your batteries, meet a friend for dinner or a drink, and relax in an undiscovered secret paradise you’ll be thrilled to discover.

within at least the Last 5 years we have spent lots of time here at la casa del sombrero.

It always has been some kind of refugee from the City, away from the masses of tourist in montañita and salinas.

Lots of changes have happened this year....unfortunately.

Altough there are some positive changes in Infrastructure (best shower conditions of warm water and pressure in Ecuador so far) and theres a good sign and that investments that have been made, theres also a bad site coming up.

Paradise is gone....Sandbags piling up (of course they are necessary, but they are not being care of, leaking of being covered with Sand), loud music played all day (questioning them to turn the volume down have been ignored),personnel hanging Out Rather then caring (had two ask three times for toilet paper).

Heart is gone, drunk latinos have come.
