I love the old-world charm of Matjiesfontein, so it was an obvious choice for my wedding weekend. We kicked off the weekend with a casual braai and drinks in the Laird's Arms pub. After a day of exploring the town and relaxing by the pool, guests were transported to the ceremony in the town's London bus from the 1950s. The...

Came back here after twenty years and thankfully nothing has changed! What a wonderful experience. We sang along with the pianist in the bar, had a delicious supper and slept well in the motel section of the hotel, where the rooms are more than adaquate and you still get to use the hotels facilities. What a fun place for s...

Don't miss the bus tour and the pub, when the tour guide starts to sing like Louis Armstrong and plays the piano ! It's a true revival of a past century and one of the funniest experiences of my life!

A fantastic piece of Victoriana in the middle of the Karoo - almost impossible to imagine until you have visited there ! A must go place for anyone interested in history around the "growing up" of Southern Africa and the Boer War.

With lots to do in this historic town you definitely won't be sitting in your room the whole day! With an excellent pool and well equipped bar it is everything you could wish for. The only downside is that they don't have WiFi available :(

Dear Andre, Thank you very much for your review and always great to hear such positive feedback from guests. We do have Wi-Fi available in the hotel area of the main building and on the "stoep". Best is to ask at reception, as they do provide guests with a log-in code. We look forward seeing you again. Kind regards, Werner...

An ideal wedding spot! The town is catered around a specific theme/era and the grounds and staff play to it beautifully. The grounds are incredible, amazing pool area, museums and the general location is something out of a movie. Our room was unfortunately very small and the bedding itchy, the only downside for us. Otherwise a great buffet breakfast, the...

My wife and I passed through from Prince Albert and decided to stop and have a look. The best stop I made on the trip to Cape Town. the photos only give the front of the hotel but the gardens at the back and the swimming pool area are really something, more lawns here than in the whole of Prince...

We were in Matjiesfontein for a 50th birthday party weekend and I can't think of a nicer venue to have a group of people celebrating a wedding or a landmark anniversary. The hotel is a step back in time and the staff are all superb. We arrived friday late afternoon and after some cold local beers in The Laird's Arms,...

We spent the weekend at The Lord Milner Hotel with friends and felt like we'd been transported to a different era! Just off the N1, it is very conveniently located and easily accessible. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lord Milner is a lovely Victorian Hotel, full of history and atmosphere, begging to be explored. Matjiesfontein, the town itself has wonderful gardens to leisurely lose yourself in, interesting museums abundant with all sorts, as well as the typical general store/gift shop, a small chapel, a coffee house full of homemade goodies, an old courthouse, a recently renovated church and The Laird’s Arms Bar. Most evenings, one can enjoy a ride on the old London bus and tour the grounds with our entertainer Johnny. Then experience sundowners in the Laird's Arms. Dinner is served from 7-9pm in our beautiful candlelit dining room. We’ve hosted some beautiful weddings and outrageous birthday parties in our transport museum or the old Courthouse. We are only 3 hours from Cape Town by road or take the train.. "The Train to Matjiesfontein". ... more   less
