The owners love their home, clearly and passionately. There will always be much work that remains on grounds this vast. The immensity and challenges for 2 people running/owning it is awesome. The original architecture is indeed stunning and easily appreciated, as is the location of the property. The views over the river and the grounds are lovely and peaceful. Some rooms are better designed and furnished than others, so choosing (to one's tastes) makes a difference. Regarding required hotel details, such as room/bathroom cleaning, of the 3 nights we stayed, no one cleaned or made up our room the first night, with no explanation (or apologies). We assumed this was standard (although after 69 years a distinct "first") and we should make our own beds and clean the bathroom. As we had run out of toilet paper, we had to ask for more. Even upon asking for an embarrassing basic, there were no explanations, rather a slightly defensive and unfriendly response. The second day the room was hastily made up while all personal items in the bathroom had been stored away (this simply is not done in the hotel business...leave guests personal articles alone unless directed). Were we intruders in a private home that could only be maintained by renting to guests? At best we felt uncomfortable if not a bit concerned by these odd behaviors. It is difficult to praise the owners as welcoming (as so many other tripadvisor posts have remarked). The breakfast is, as most tripadvisor posts say, above average. Unusually generous by french standards, offering superb meats and cheese along with usual baguette and croissants, presented in the graceful breakfast room fronted by windows overlooking grounds and river. But here too were some variations, with an entire baguette laid at each table one day (with no cutting board or knife to attack it) while the next day, none. Yes a small detail, but noticeable after the room cleaning hiccups. One has to ignore door handles that fall off, dusty corners and a french laissez faire (if not simply strange) approach to service. Would we stay here again or recommend to others? Maybe. Probably because we have stayed at a number of privately owned French chateaux, most of them works in progress, with tinges of past glories peeking out of corners. This chateau is stunning at it's core, so as it peeks through the vision and dreams of it's owners, one does see how remarkable it was.…
