We as the present owners, along with our guests, enjoy a right of way to the lake's shore down a short lane in front of the house. Small boats and canoes can be launched from here in the summer. The house has been carefully restored in keeping with its Victorian heritage and has four rooms available, named after the children of the Hillhouse family: Margaret's Suite, Beatrice's Room, Donna's Room and Percival's Room. Enjoy your stay in our comfortable home and have the option of eating a hearty breakfast in our dining room or on the covered veranda overlooking the gardens. Whether it will be a romantic weekend away or a relaxing interlude, your hosts Louise and Gilles welcome you to this beautiful area. Learn about the local history, take part in the annual art and wine tours or hike in the hills. There is something for everybody to enjoy. Please email or telephone us for details.

Detailed Reviews

My friend and I travelled to Lac Brome last week to do a THREE PINES tour based on the novels by Louise Penny. We were so fortunate to have chosen Hillhouse B & B for our 2 night stay in Lac Brome and Knowlton areas.
Our hosts, Louise and Gilles, along with their newly adopted senior dog, Callie, were so welcoming and so friendly. The breakfasts were out of this world and Louise & Gilles were so accommodating regarding our breakfast item selections.
Without hesitation, we would highly recommend staying at this beautifully maintained B & B whenever you are in the area.

As other reviews have mentioned, the hospitality of the hosts Louise and Gilles are without equal and their lovingly preserved home is gorgeous and inviting. We rented a cozy room with private bathroom. The room was equipped with an abundance of useful right down to including wine glasses and bottle opener. Air conditioning unit was included to the room. Bedding was fresh and very comfortable and we definitely felt pampered. We were there 3 days and were served 3 different scrumptious breakfasts each day. The hosts were generous with their time and Louise was always happy to offer advice on the local points of interest and best places to eat. We are already planning a next visit in the Fall and look forward to spending more time at this wonderful home.

From start to finish, our time spent at B&B Hillhouse was lovely! Set in picturesque Knowlton, this immaculate and well-appointed home met all of our needs and then some! Louise and Gilles are the consummate hosts and happen to be very talented in the kitchen as well! The daily breakfasts were delicious and they even seamlessly addressed my gluten intolerance. We participated in the Three Pines Tour (with three other guests) that began and ended at Hillhouse. After spending nine engaging, fun hours on the tour, we ended up talking to our new friends in the front living room of the B&B for four more hours! Our hosts made us feel right at home and we were most appreciative. We’re already planning our next visit!

As someone who booked a stay here, I feel compelled to share my experience to help future potential patrons make informed decisions about staying.
Upon arrival, my party and I were immediately met with verbally abusive behaviour from the owner. Despite our arrival time being pre-approved by his partner, he came out screaming and began berating us before we even reached the front door. His unwarranted confrontation left us shocked, extremely uncomfortable and also feeling unsafe.
What’s particularly troubling is that we had written evidence from the owner’s partner outlining the self-check-in procedure and confirmation of our arrival time. Despite immediately providing this information, he continued to verbally abuse us. We offered multiple opportunities for him to discontinue his aggressive behavior, but he persisted. One of his responses was to claim that he was a five-star establishment which only added to our disbelief. Anyone who treats their guests with such disregard and disrespect should not hold a five-star rating.
We did not stay due to the verbal attack and our sense of insecurity. The owner assured us that he had not charged our Visa; however, upon leaving, we later received notification from the booking agency that he entered us as a “no show.” Doing so results in him receiving full payment. Now, we must also deal with the booking agency.
As patrons, especially those who booked based on star rating and through a third-party agency, we expected a certain level of professionalism, courtesy, and honesty. Verbal abuse is never acceptable, regardless of any situation, let alone one that was not even remotely warranted.
I hope that sharing this review will serve as a heads-up for potential patrons about what they may encounter and for those who wish to not support the kind of person who engages in such disturbing behaviour. Perhaps this will also encourage the owner to reflect on his behaviour and consider treating people with basic common courtesy and respect.

Thank you Louise and Gilles for accommodating us! Your kindness and stories made the stay a pleasant one. A 10-minute drive from the town of Knowlton, the BnB is easily accessed as it is located directly on a main artery. While we normally prefer a private bath, the bath outside our room, down the hall, actually worked well because of COVID... we didn't have to share! Hurrah! Louise kindly made reservations for us and helped with directions. Gilles prepared our breakfast... Entrees during our 3 days included poached eggs in a vol-au-vent, fried eggs and duck sausage, and French toast and bacon, and were preceded by either fruit, a pastry or avocado/ cottage cheese. Our room was comfortable and included all necessary amenities. A guest fridge was located in the hallway, with optional coffee service for $2. Payment can be by credit card, with an optional Tip to the owners, if you wish. We enjoyed our stay with you! Lac Brome is definitely worth a visit!!

My sister and I stayed here for 3 nights in the room at the very top of the house. It has 2 queen beds and a claw foot tub. I wasn't sure about that - since we are "shower" people, but it turned out to be the best thing ever. A hot bath after a chilly day sightseeing in this beautiful area of the world was the perfect conclusion. And the perfect start to every day was the breakfast prepared by Louise and Gilles! A pain au chocolate, blueberry oatmeal, fruit topped french toast, and local sparkling cider were just some of the breakfast highlights. We also really loved hanging out with Kalie, the best pup ever. We highly recommend this place as your home base when visiting the eastern townships. We'd come back tomorrow!

I picked this solely based upon the reviews, and it turned out to great place to stay. Only through the booking did we come to learn about the Author Louis Penny, her books, and Three Pines. The accommodations and food were excellent. Louise and Gilles were wonderful; we enjoyed talking with them and getting to know them during our stay. They gave us great suggestions about Louse Penny landmarks and great recommendations for restaurants. We actually met Louise during our visit. We would definitely come back.

We were verbally attacked for a late arrival. Advanced notice was given 4 days prior. Upon proof of their written acknowledgment, the proprietor maintained his aggressive mannerism. Being in a vulnerable situation, we did not feel safe maintaining our reservation.

I had the most wonderful time staying at the Hillhouse B&B.
The breakfast alone was enough to make me ready to plan my second trip. I traveled through Quebec for a week and a half and to be honest, some of my favorite breakfast’s were at Louise and Gilles table.
The room I stayed in was so cute and comfortable and the house is gorgeous. I was a solo traveler and it was a perfect getaway in the countryside. Louise and Gilles are pro hosts and I already cannot wait to return, hopefully for a fall foliage getaway next time. Though summer is absolutely stunning in this area!
