Interacting with the elephants was an incredible experience. We got to feed them sugar cane and they seemed so happy and kept begging for more. Bathing DeeDee the elephant was so fun and she really seemed to be enjoying herself. Our guide (Alex, I think) was very friendly and answered all of our questions about the elephants. I was a...

I stayed in one of the nature bungalows for 3 nights in December 2016. Arranging transportation through messages with Alexa was easy and the driver showed up promptly as scheduled. Upon arriving, I was greeted with a coconut and a smile. Excellent hospitality throughout the three days; the girls helped book any excursion or ride I needed and the food...

We stayed at the retreat for 2 nights and had the most amazing time - bamboo rafting down the river, early morning elephant walks in the jungle, bathing the elephants and disconnecting from busy Thailand. *** No, they are not mistreated. Elephants seem to be having fun and are cared for. It seemed like they were in their natural habitat...

While I love these women and that the proceeds help prevent human trafficking, its important to managing expectations. No, this is not an elephant sanctuary. Chai lai was created to give local at-risk women job skills in hospitality so they don’t fall into the sex trade. When the owners of Chai Lai realized they were next door to an elephant...

This was the 2nd stop in our two week holiday to Thailand and I was so excited about it, happy to say it totally surpassed my expectations and I fell in love with it. We had a river view room with a/c which I can highly recommend, we met someone who had an elephant view room and they said it...

Although I believe the owner's heart is in the right place, the reality is not what you see on their website. The elephants are shackled to the ground most of the day, often perched on a steep hill with nowhere to go. I was especially disturbed by one young elephant who was obviously in psychological distress as he continually rocked...

After first visiting the Chai Lai Orchid (CLO) in early 2013, I returned to live in Chiang Mai just over 2 years ago. During that time I have visited the Chai Lai Orchid many times, occasionally staying overnight and frequently eating in their riverside cafe, which serves a wide range of delicious Thai and western dishes. I have got to...

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights back in December. Before writing this I read some of the bad reviews and can tell you that the people writing those are whiny cry babies. This seriously the best place I have ever been. Yes, the rooms are basic, but you are staying in the middle of the jungle! If...

I search long and hard before choosing this place for my family of 4 for a 3 night stay. Perfect amount of time to relax and take a couple of tours. The day we arrived we just relaxed in the beautiful setting and settled into our room. It was the family room with air con, but we never even turned...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Chai Lai Orchid is a nature retreat nestled beside the river and surrounded by lush tropical forest. The eco lodge is a social business working to empower Karen and Kayan women. Here you can spend your days swimming with elephants in the river, lounging hammocks, and trekking to visit near by waterfalls and hill tribe villages. The Chai Lai Orchid is currently working to rescue elephants from their daily chair tours and long hours. We offer our guests the opportunity to bathe, bareback ride and play with the elephants and proceeds go towards our cause.
