A century ago the village of Benmiller was a vigorous pioneer settlement and its daily life centered around woolen, saw and grist mills. Today, the millstream still runs, but the two 1878 mills now play a far different role. A great deal of love and careful planning have converted them into one of the most comfortable country inns without sacrificing their innate charm and dignity. The Inn is an ideal setting for an Ontario weekend getaway, a romantic retreat or just a restful few days away from the city. It is secluded and peaceful, yet provides every modern convenience. Recreational opportunities range from the simple pleasures of a stroll through unspoiled countryside to fishing in the autumn or cross-country skiing in the winter. Less vigorous activities might include relaxing with drinks in the Lounge or simply curling up beside the fireplace. The Inn is just minutes from Lake Huron, golf courses, horseback riding, live theater, wake boarding, paddle boarding, fly fishing and more.

We joined another couple celebrating their anniversary -- stayed in the River Mill rooms overlooking the river. Rooms were clean and very specious. The staff are appropriately careful with cleaning and each day left clean linens and towels in plastic wrap outside our door so not interaction with housekeeping which was reassuring. Staff at check in very friendly + helpful + meals were also very good, especially lunch + dinner on the patio.
A nice "old inn" experience overall.

We previously enjoyed staying at the Benmiller Inn near Goderich in 2002 and 2008 and visited in late July 2021 for the third and last time. The inn’s interesting history over 40 years and beautifully kept gardens continued to draw our interest. The dining room and patio food was very good and the wait staff was friendly but inadequate in numbers. A friend visited before us and advised us to cancel due to housekeeping concerns. Instead my husband asked Reception for a preferred room. Room 65 in Gledhill House was spacious with a good bathroom and a balcony the width of the room. Unfortunately the room had not been vacuumed and no housekeeping staff was available. On my request Reception provided a broom and dustpan which I used to sweep up dust, hair, grit and some insects. The AC aside from the fan did not work. Hopefully First Canadian Management will greatly improve the housekeeping, AC repairs and overall building maintenance to live up to Benmiller’s previous reputation. Until then we will not return or recommend this heritage inn to friends.

From the time of booking to checking out, staff were incredibly friendly. Buildings have character & and history, and walking between them isn't an issue. Our upper room was warm, cozy. Balcony that overlooked river. We had a living room and seperate bedroom, big bathroom with a dry sauna. A small kitchenett with mini fridge, keurig, coffee mugs and glass cups. We liked that they were real drinking cups/mugs not disposable. The bed was big, and the mattress dipped a bit in the middle but was comfortable and great . Breakfast was very good, fresh & tasty. The pool/hot tub was in the Mill building, and fyi there are stairs that go down to them. The Spa is in the same building and book a massage by Chrissy, amazing! It has a calmness and peaceful feel to it, not the hussle and bustle of the city, life. We read reviews and saw words like outdated, needs upgrading, etc. Are there areas that could get some tlc? Yes, but does it take away from the history or charm? No. We would return.

My husband and I booked the Romantic Retreat package and added in some spa appointments. The Inn is very historic, quaint yet elegant.
They pay attention to every little detail. The room we had (in the River Room building where the indoor pool is) was very well appointed, spacious and provided a gorgeous winter view of the Maitland River. The bathroom with vanity was separate from the rest of the room and then there was a second sink/vanity in the room. We did not use the jacuzzi tub in our room because we were in the pool building and used it along with the hot tub (which is in a very cool retrofit silo).
As mentioned we had some spa appointments (the March special). The attendant in the spa was exactly what one would expect and she provided a very relaxing body wrap and facial. The spa rooms are well laid out with access to sitting areas and showers (depending on your service). There is calming music playing throughout the spa.

We then got to visit the dining room twice: once for our 3-course dinner which we were able to choose off the menu ourselves. Both my husband and I had something different and were both amazed at the skill of the chef, the portion size and presentation. Our waitress was very friendly and made perfect drink/wine recommendations to go with our meal. In the morning we ordered our breakfast of choice, again from the full menu...nothing was off limits! It was truly amazing, met all of our expectations, was a Romantic Getaway and we can't wait to go back!!

We stayed two nights in the scenic, historic Inn. We were very disappointed in a number of ways. First of all, it is dated and very tired looking; in need of new carpeting throughout (musty smell), paint and most important, new mattresses. We had two poor sleeps due to a mattress that sank in the middle and was lumpy. The hallway smelled musty, like a closed up cottage and was so hot. The carpet in our room was soiled and worn. The jacuzzi tub in our room did not work and was stained and chipped. There was no mounted magnifier mirror which is not a luxury but critical for those with reduced vision.
While the wait staff in the restaurant was friendly, the food was mediocre at best. The caesar salad was so simple, we had to search for bacon, parmesan and the croutons I'm sure were out of a box. The meals were mediocre in the quality of the ingredients. Breakfast offered only carb and protein heavy food...no yogurt or granola. The fresh fruit is tiny is quantity and the scone is refrigerator cold.
We asked to sit out on the patio on a beautiful, sunny September morning only to be told that the server was alone and did not have time to wipe down the furniture. We and others waited for an unacceptable time to be seated. Quite un professional.
The grounds, while beautiful, were unkempt as well, Garden beds were full of weeds.
We only hope this beautiful venue will be upgraded and restored in the near future.

Poor service, no communication. Cannot book the spa and inn together. Happened to us twice we booked the inn then had to cancel due to issues with the spa. The first was a miscommunication (?) that there was alot of availability over the weekend we wanted; however when I heard from the spa I was informed they'd been "booked for weeks".

The second time we tried to book well in advance, provided the spa with two potential weekends and four dates. We booked and confirmed, then booked the inn. Shortly after we were contacted by the spa (via email, no calls were made) that they could NOT actually see us that weekend. We requested a call (none was received); the response to our follow up email was one line "Unfortunately there is not".

For a business (businesses) in a small area that rely on reputation and quality of service, this is clearly lacking. We were booking four services with the spa, two nights at the inn, and two dinner reservations. The level of service we received (or rather, did not receive) does not align with this level of expense.

If I'm handing someone ~ $1000 for a weekend I expect a phone call at the very least if a reservation error is made. Not to say sorry or massage my ego but so we can actually book the services we want.

The spa did not even attempt to offer other weekends, which is extremely frustrating because there is no online booking system. Without them telling me when they are available I have no idea what their availability is like. So to receive a one liner that nothing is available, is pretty apalling and completely useless and unhelpful.

A phone call and suggesting alternate times is a pretty low bar and a very basic "necessity" in personal service businesses.

The Woollen Mill building nestles in a picturesque wooded valley beside Sharpe's Creek. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and welcoming. My room was comfortable with a modern bathroom and flat screen TV and coffee maker. The dining room overlooks Sharpe's Creek. The weekday breakfasts are generous with a fresh scone and fruit salad to start and for example an omelette and fries and toast and coffee. The buffet brunch on Sunday is wonderful with a wide range of hot and cold dishes and juice and coffee.
The River Mill building, a short walk away next to the Maitland River, has an indoor heated pool and hot tub and sauna. Nearby trails provide for scenic walks through the woods. A wonderful place to visit and relax!

Very disapointed in our meal. We decided to just have appetizers for a meal. It started with the waitress bringing us bread, which consisted of one dinner roll cut in four? We then had ordered the calamari which was mostly the whole squid battered, two of those and about 4 small rings for $16. Next we had the caesar salad for $16 dollars and the romaine was rusty and the dressing from a bottle, Tiny pieces of bacon a few croutons and I finally found some cheese at the bottom.
Then we had the scallops which came on a long plate with some greens strewn on it and 4 small scallops for $19. They were each about 1 inch wide by 1/2 inch thick.
At that point we gave up and paid our bill and decided not to continue with trying to actually get some food.
Not as it was in past years very disappointing and we won't be back .

Having heard about Benmiller for many years, I was excited about going there for a girls' getaway. Benmiller is in a lovely location and I'm sure it really was lovely at some point but those days are long gone.

At check in I tried to confirm our dinner plans. Despite the email confirmation we had, there was no reservation. The not very friendly lady at the desk said "oh, they probably forgot to write it down". We managed to make a later reservation that night. As far as the restaurant goes, we waited a full hour from time of ordering to receiving our food, without so much as an apology. 3 of 4 of us ordered fish and chips...place fish in batter, put in fryer, add fries and put on plate, it certainly doesn't take an hour!! Other than the ton of large crystal salt visible on top of the fish, it was good. Very generous portions.

Our rooms were adequate but small, old lumpy beds, paper thin old sheets, nice towels, decent bathroom, old foam pillows.

We enjoyed our time at the pool and sitting outside watching the river. Too bad we actually looked back at the building. The windows above us were so incredibly filthy we actually took pictures because no one would have believed our description if we told them.

Overall, I think this might once have been a desirable place to visit but right now it needs a huge facelift. In the meantime, it is criminal to charge the prices they are, we all need a refund!! This is a 2 star at best.

We just got back from an awsome weekend at Benmiller with my daughter and grandchildren. Both rooms were very nice and clean. The food at the restaurant was fantastic and reasonably priced. The Sunday brunch was amazing with a big variety of great food. They even have a machine that squeezes fresh oranges for your orange juice. All the staff was so nice and really made us all feel lick home Well done Benmiller. We will definitely be back
