We decided to go to Patmos for almost 2 weeks and after browsing the internet, reading reviews and comparing price quotes, we choose Hotel Australis and booked a 2 bed apartment. We flew in to Kos and took the ferry from there which takes you to Patmos in about 2,5 hours.

The location of the hotel did not look to great to me at first glance, but in the end turned out very convenient; just far enough from the more noisy center, but restaurants and beaches in walking distance. Close to the hotel there is a little supermarket and fruit shop.

When you enter the hotel premises you notice the beautiful garden and flowers everywhere; the result of 25 years of passion and care from Mr Focas.
Our apartment had 2 bedrooms with A/C, living room, kitchen and a nice balcony; enough space. Good WIFI (no extra fee) available.

Breakfast was included and served on a shady terrace. Toasted bread, coffee, orange juice, jam, cake & cookies, boiled egg, tomato and cheese and sometimes ham. Even we stayed for almost 2 weeks, the breakfast didn't bore us and was more than enough.

The owners are very friendly without being pushy, we felt at ease and relaxed.
I didn't find it noisy and never heard anything from the other rooms.

In walking distance you have a couple of beaches;
- Scala beach near the harbor where you have some cafe's and terraces on the beach. We went here the first day to have a drink on the beach while the kids were swimming. This beach can become crowded when the huge cruise boats arrive and dropping the tourists of for a 3 hour visit to Patmos. But after 7pm everyone is gone and the cafe on the beach is a nice place to chill on warm evenings.
- Meloi beach is about 15 mins walk away and is a quiet sandy beach with 2 very very nice restaurants. One at the beachfront and one at the camping site behind the beach.
Actually the restaurant on the Camping is of absolute great value and fab quality (and huge portions). We could eat here for about 25-30 euros for 4 incl wine.
- Aspri beach is just before Meloi and is smaller and quieter. A beautiful restaurant where you can feed the fish from your table, but only open after 6pm.
Around the corner of the hotel you will find Merika beach, but the waves a bit to rough to swim. Good place to enjoy the sunset.

We decided to rent a car and got a very good price from car rental Alexandros (turn right at the harbor and walk for 5 mins, it is after the Marina cafe).
Having the car, we discovered some more fantastic beaches: Livadi Geranou with again a nice tavern and Psilli Ammos, a beautiful remote beach with fine sand and nice big waves. At the beach, a small taverna that serve simple but good food. You will have to walk for 30 mins to to get to this beach, but it is worth while.

We tried quite a few restaurants during our stay and below a few favorites.
- Camping site in Meloi, they grill on coal, cheap and very good quality food
- The restaurant that has some tables on the beach (walk from hotel to the harbor and it is the first restaurant that has some tables on the beach and a terrace at the first floor). More finer cuisine, but still very affordable, loved their spinach patties.
Note that the restaurant at the ground floor is a different one.
- Petra Beach - only one restaurant which is full every time I went there. fresh quality, great rabbit in tomato sauce. They also have smaller snacks like toasties and many sweets.
- Livadi Geranou - Great fresh grilled fish and not expensive
- Vagia Cafe is great for sweets, cake and omelets

We had a great time in Patmos and we had a great stay in Hotel Australis.
When coming to Patmos, I will be staying there again.

Hope you find some useful info in my review.

Stayed a week and had a lovely time. I can warmly recommend a room on the first floor - cool and clean :-)
Our host treated us as kings, he helped wherever he could - e.g picked us up from the beach!!

Hotel Australis is just perfect for me. It's central to everything, includes a decent if perhaps even better than decent breakfast, super clean, and is professionally run by people who care. Their care goes beyond just the room but your experience in Patmos. I noticed my fellow guests included many who just come back year after year, request the same room and camp out at Australis for a month. And my room at 35 Euros for a single just cannot be beat. Just another great experience to add to my many great experiences as I travel through Greece.

We stayed at the Australis Hotel for 2 nights/3 days as we were taking the overnight ferry to Athens on the last day. Upon arrival Peter, the owner, picked us up from the dock, as we arrived via ferry from Samos and he returned us to the dock at trips end.
We had asked for a room with a nice view and we were extremely happy with room #12. It was a triple, which gave us more room for suitcases but the best part was an extra large sized balcony covered with bougainvillea flowers and fantastic view! This is a beautiful property that is well maintained, clean, comfortable and friendly. There is also a shared large balcony and a large covered outdoor breakfast area.
Peter arranged for a moped bike rental and we spent our days site seeing on the island. The Patmos Sacred Music Festival was wonderful and we enjoyed Hora, Cave of the Apocalypse, Monastery of St John and the many wonderful beaches.
The Australis Hotel and Apartments is beautiful, relaxing and quite possibly one of the best values on Patmos!

We were the first visitors this year. In late March. Extremely good taken care of. As we always have been. This simple but very nice hotel is the place to stay in Skala. Fokas' Garden surronds you when eating breakfast. And the first flowers were there to see. Don't miss them if you are going to Patmos. It is ten years since the last time we set our feet at the island. A beautiful nostalgia trip.

I have just stayed at the Australis for the fourth time, rather fewer than some of my fellow guests who were there for the sixteenth time! That anyone would want to return to the same hotel sixteen years in a row says a lot about the quality of service and comfort. In fact what is there not to like about it? The rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable and most have a balcony with fine views of the harbour and the Monastery of St John. The breakfast buffet, new since my last visit, is excellent. As it is situated about a little less than 1km from the centre of Skala, it is quiet but close enough to the centre of the town to make the restaurants and shops easily accessible. And to top it all it is set in the most beautiful, colourful garden. But what makes a stay at the Australis so memorable is the warm and friendly service offered by the family that owns it. Nothing is too much trouble. Peter Michelis who has taken over the running of the hotel from his father, Fokas, could not have been kinder. And his staff were equally friendly and efficient.
I wholeheartedly recommend the Hotel Australis. I am already planning my next trip.

I have stayed at the Australis Hotel four times since 2011 and am about to return. That says it all, I think. It is a lovely hotel on the most beautiful island in the world. Fokas Michelis built the hotel and maintains all the gorgeous landscaping. (Some of the earlier reviews are confused: Fokas is his first name and Michelis is his last name.) He and his wife Kristina are such wonderful people! They lived in Australia for a while, hence the hotel name. I love visiting their special spot; they make you feel like part of the family. Fokas has done so much to make my trips memorable, from taking me to St. John's monastery for an evening service to giving me a personal tour of the island. And we always have such interesting conversations! He has told me so much about the Greek Orthodox religion and the island. Recently, his son, Peter, and his lovely wife Tonia have taken over running the hotel and they are continuing in the warm family tradition. If you want to chat, they are very friendly, if you prefer privacy, they honor that. Everything is well-maintained, clean, and pretty. Nadia from Rumania helps with breakfast that is served on a charming patio. She does an amazing job cleaning and making sure the guests are well taken care of. (Be sure to visit the shop she and Manos have in town; it’s called “Manos” and is behind the Pantellis Café.) Thespina, Fokas’s daughter, also helps out – she owns the Villa Knosos next door, which is also a really great hotel. And cousin Argiroula (hard for Americans to pronounce!) also is really sweet and helpful. It’s definitely a warm Greek Family operation and they all make the stay really great. The Australis is about four blocks from the center of town in a quiet neighborhood and some rooms have beautiful views of the port and sea. There also are four apartments with kitchenettes for families or longer stays. Patmos feels like a Greek village on the sea - it has far fewer tourists than many other islands so you really feel like you are in Greece, not some tourist trap. Everywhere you go are beautiful sights. One of my favorite things to do is to take a taxi up the steep hill to the Monastery, wander around the village, Hora, have lunch at Jimmy’s café that has a totally gorgeous patio with a view of Patmos and the sea, and then walk the two miles down the very rocky path back to Scala. I really love spending time there and I highly recommend the Australis Hotel.

I visited Patmos last September 2011 and stayed at the Australis hotel for a few days. The island is one of the most beautiful in Greece with many hidden gems. When I rent a room, I'm normally not fussy. But this time I was put in somewhat a room which was big but very stuffy. Don't take the room near the kitchen is what I'm saying. I had a nice stay, the hotel is nice and rooms are clean. The Focas family is great. I had the pleasure to have long conversations with Mixalis Focas ( the father) as a good Greek father is was telling me what kind of Greek wife I should get. He has very good points. What a gentleman and someone who know the value of relationships. This is my most memorable experience at the Australis. If it wasn't for that, I would rate it as average and I would've preferred a room closer to the port for the extra life. The Australis is situated in a quiet street near the main port road. If you want quiet it's good and you can walk to the main plaka in Skala...it takes about 10 min. Have a look at what you can do here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkmmb3Rq81c

Sometimes when you write a review you try to be as much specific as you can for others to understand your experience and help them draw a picture in their mind. Australis Hotel does not only deserves every other good review written here and are extremely accurate, but moreover this hotel can be a good example on how to treat and guest people in a family hotel. We traveled to Patmos island for the first time , curious even for us Greeks for what we will find, since every Greek Island is different . Everything kept up with our expectations. Australis Hotel is for sure the best base to start your journey in the famous history of the Island and enjoy the great beaches as well. Pantelis ,the owner of the hotel will take care of everything for you . Just ask him. The hotel offers a generous breakfast until late in the morning, daily change of towels, spacious renovated rooms comfortable beds and cozy linens ,free -good speed -Wifi and a magnificent garden . Its location is ideal since it is close to the harbor and on the way to the beaches of the island. Even though , Patmos is small, it has a mysterious way that attracts people on long term vacations and most of them keep coming back year to year. This small gem hotel seems to be a reason and it can provide you with quality vacations feeling close to home .Since we returned we are thinking on when to go back to Patmos and our new friend Pantelis ,so simple.
