Received an e-mail on October 03, 2017 from Red Indian Lodge, they closed their doors with the end of the 2017 season. This was a very nice, friendly lodge with great folks. Guides and staff were awesome. My wife and I caught many fish and always had a great time. They will be missed.

Just came back from a great adventure up to Lake of the Woods, Ontario for a reunion fishing trip with family and friends. We had originally planned to stay at another lodge (White Birch), but they had to cancel and close. We arrived via Winnipeg International airport from the west coast of the USA (3.5 hour drive).

The good (which was 90%)
We were so happy that Red Indian could accommodate our group with short notice. Thank you Thank you Red Indian! Booking was so easy and they are so nice.

The grounds are immaculate and beautiful. I think its one of the few places on the lake (or at least in Sioux Narrows) with sandy beaches. They have paddle boats, basic kayaks and a small marina where our guides picked up/dropped off (not sure the rules for use).

The cabins were very well kept and very clean. It was so nice to be in such a rustic location with daily maid service. They made the beds (which were comfortable to me), changed the bedding and towels and cleaned up our stuff very thoughtfully. Well worth the price. The beds are a mix of twins and one or two doubles. The cabins are various configurations and all seem to have lake view. Two cabins are directly on the lake and have nice decks that can accommodate about 6-8 people for evening cocktails or just admiring the view.

The fishing was great for my first time (my partners said it's been better), but I think that's left to conditions and tackle choice. One of our members (a 7 year old boy) caught a 49" Muskie (Muskellunge), which is a rare catch. They call it the 1 in 10,000 cast catch. The guides were really good. We had Dan (who loves to fish with you) and Clark (who also loves to fish and is a filet machine). We also had our favorite guide along for the ride coordinating.

Other: They have a mini-golf (home-made) and a lot of fun for the kids and nice shoreline for playing in the water, enjoying a nice stroll or casting for Walleye, Small-mouth bass, etc.

The not so good (10%)
The meal plan (don't do unless you don't care or have low standards for food. There are much better options even if you have to go to Big John's bar (food and view and people good/fun) every night for dinner. If you have more time, head up to Kenora (23 miles north) where there's a better selection for food. There's a place called "Lake of the Woods Brewing Company" that gets good reviews.

Ok, with all the good, there's one thing I need to mention. The food was sub-par with some shinny moments. I've attached a photo of the leather, they call roast-beef. We had 11 people who mostly ordered this one night and only one person finished. The wheat toast in the morning was over toasted and more like croutons. Again, ignore this if your not there at all for the food. It was completely ok to survive and focus on the fishing and other fun. One more strike was the cocktails. Don't do it. You're there for fishing, you should probably BYOB (Bring your own booze) and enjoy at your cabin. Beer and wine are the safe bets at the lodge.

It wasn't all bad. The breakfast is ok and I really liked the french toast. The scrambled eggs were nicely folded, but browned. The "Ham" in the morning was Spam™ or something like it (I love Spam™ :) I had a healthy tuna and cottage cheese salad that was delicious and I don't normally eat cottage cheese.

In summary, this was a great location for getting away, catching fish, meeting some nice people from the Northern US and relaxing. I'd recommend if you're planning a rustic trip to The Lake of the Woods.

Note: Wifi (only) Internet access reliably from the office, not the lodge (spotty), not the cabins (none).

I reviewed the Red Indian Lodge a few years ago but wanted to update as they are under new Management. As mentioned before the staff at Red Indian Lodge are the best and bring true meaning to the word hospitality. They go over and beyond to make sure your stay is relaxing and nice. The new Management is bringing improvements and updates to the lodge, some of which are being seen immediately, others are in the near future. The food is quite good and if you go away hungry it is your own fault. The fishing is excellent. The local guides are very knowledgeable and a blast to be around. The cabins are very clean and nice inside. If you are looking for a place to get away from it all and enjoy some good fishing, I highly recommend this location. My wife and I will be returning.

My family and I came to Red Indian Lodge to say farewell to family leaving until next summer! First off there was 4 options on the menu which was a great disappointment but we each managed to pick something to order. The waitress took our drink/ food order she was very quite and unprofessional, she did not offer ketchup for fries or lemon for fish and came back after we were done eating to see how everything was, in which we explained it was not good, all she said was oh, no apology just walked away. We received our dinner plates and each and every one of us was disappointed, raw steak/ over cooked Brussel sprouts. The only thing good on the plate was a baked potato! When we were paying our bill we explained that we had horrible food and horrible service, both waitresses stood there and stared at us!! Never going back!

I spent a wonderful time fishing and relaxing with three friends. We stayed five days and four nights. Our cabin was very clean and had great view of the lake ( right on the water # 16). It was well furnished two bathrooms. The maid clean ed and made beds daily. We did the American Plan got a huge breakfast and dinner (all you could eat) with different choices daily. We had two fish boats and two guides Chris and Clark brothers. We caught daily limits of walleye crappie and pike. We also caught many small mouth bass and perch. Our guides cooked up a wonderful shore lunch each day. Walleye right out of the lake hash browns beans cream corn cookies for dessert. We released hundreds of fish we couldn't keep because of the limited. We all took limits home of walleye crappie plus pike . Caught a 37 inch pike I released. I can't wait to get back next year. I would highly recommend this lodge. I would highly recommend Chris or Clark as guides. Best Wishes, JON

I really enjoyed my 2 trips to Red Indian Lodge. We had excellent service both times. The resort is on beautiful acres near Sioux Narrows. For a fishing trip, we were surprising close to a "town" which is nice if you need additional supplies or want to hit a pub after a day of fishing. The swimming beach is really nice and sandy. Our first trip we used one of the guides and they really put us on the fish! I tried to keep track of how many I caught in 1 day and I stopped counting at 50! Unreal!! I would recommend visiting Red Indian Lodge if you are looking for a fun Canadian fishing trip.

Disclaimer, my last trip was July 2010 (the dates I could select only went back 1 year).

The Managers and staff are the true definition of excellent customer service as they make the time spent at Red Indian Logde wonderful. This is not a corporate owned facility which makes it very nice. The cabins are quite clean and the available facilities very nice. The food is basic but very good although the menu is limited. The local guides are quite knowledgeable about Lake of the Woods and the fishing is great. If you are looking for a quiet and beautiful setting with nice folks around, this is the spot.

Back in the 80's. Herbert Hoffman owned this resort and it was voted the # 1 resort in Canada. Going up there, you'd understand why. It was well maintained, top of the notch "everything" from guides to food in the dining area to fishing boats and on and on. I miss the lodge. It says now that it's "Permanantly Closed". Breaks my heart to read that. It does. Herbert and his family were one of a kind. Again, it was voted # 1 in Canada more than one year in a row. Clean well kept jewel if you will...
Make you R.I.P. Herb and Mary Ann.
