The late afternoon/evening desk staff struggled to explain things to me in English, thankfully I speak enough French to get by on a trip to France. The morning staff at check out were much better

I can't recommend enough that you download the RATP app to your smartphone (if you have one), to navigate Paris public transport efficiently and effectively. It works in real time and will save you a fortune in taxi fares. Paris isn't actually that big and the public transport infrastructure is safe and effective. If you book an uber you might be looking at €40 from the Bougival Holiday Inn, depending on traffic and time of day. Local Yvelines-based taxi companies are much more expensive; twice the price at least and not worth it in the slightest.
As for public transport then: there's a bus stop on the same side of the road outside the hotel, just past the line of car parking spaces that run parallel with the main road. The bus stop's official name is Chausee Musee Tougaliev, or something like that. Take bus 259 (eastbound i.e. dont cross the road to the bus stop opposite) to Nanterre. Buses are every 15 mins or so, and the journey time is 30. mins depending on traffic. At Nanterre Prefecture you'll link up there with RER train Line A and then it's just a short hop to la Defense or Charles de Gaulle Etoile etc. From there, use your RATP app to figure out which is the fastest of the multiple Metro routes that will get you to the Eiffel Tower (it's usually Line 1 direction Chateau de Vincennes, changing at Charles de Gaulle Etoile to Line 6, direction Nation, getting off at Bir Hakkeim and then walking the last few minutes to the Tour Eiffel).
From the hotel, if you cross the main road and take the bus westwards it's about 9 stops in the other direction to St Germain en Laye, a nice place to visit with a castle, theatre and lovely cafes.
As for mainline trains,. 2.5 km from the hotel there's also the SNCF railway station that takes you on Transilien Line L to Gare St Lazare. Depending on where you're heading in Paris, the SNCF mainline is unlikely to be your fastest option.
In conclusion, if you're in Paris for a short period and money is no object, download uber and pay for taxis. But if you're being sensible and want to get a feel for the city, download the RATP app and travel by public transport. Hope that helps.

Dear Geoff L,

For the subway station you have to take a public bus or a taxi. The nearest station will be "Rueil" (better access by taxi).
If you're going to Paris it's better to take the bus 258 up to "La Defense" (25 min). If you need more information feel free to contact us.
