Detailed Reviews
We arrived late without a reservation, and they were friendly and accommodating. The place is every bit as charming as the pictures. The full-sized Bed in cottage 2 was fine not extremely comfortable, but completely fine. The cottage had a full-sized fridge and was set up really easily, the trails around the place were great. The views were sweet. There were cobwebs in the ceiling and mosquitos about, but this doesn’t bother us. The Place was clean, the dishes were useful. I don’t know how they make a living giving so much for so little. The WIFI worked well not in the cabin but near the check in/ happy hour picnic table, there were bikes. People clearly come and stay for a whole week. We loved it. I am not sure we would want to stay in Bruce mines for a week, we were just passing through. This place made passing through a sweet adventure. Its not like staying in a lighthouse on the north shore with fancy sheets and luxury views. But it was better in a way, less hip and more connected to its history and felt homey in a way that only a family run resort can feel. I wish there were more such places left. Would like to go back. No mildew or mold, bugs at night was just a part of staying in a cabin near water. But the screens kept most of them out. The history in the guest book was so interesting and the lake gorgeous and right out the door! A great deck for morning YOGA. Go you won’t regret it.

A quiet island cottage with driving access. It is remote while being within walking distance (20 minutes) of the town amenities. Grocery store, coffee shop, bank, gas station (with a quiet restaurant) LCBO are all in this quaint town. Some wifi access points if you really need it although if your goal is enjoying nature and a quiet treed setting this it the ultimate. Kayaking around the island is peaceful and relaxing. Borrow the kayaks or canoe and off you go. There is a couple of swimming area. s on the island or a short 18 minute drive to the beach at Thessalon

Stopped for one night on a transit trip and wish we could have stayed longer. Friendly greeting, personalized tour and quiet stay. Fed up with the high priced motels in big cities that really give you nothing. This was a treat. Will go back when we go back to that a area. Quick dinner at Copper Bean also helps make it 5 star.

Well…these are very rustic cottages.
The cottage was on the water…fire-pit outside.
There was wood..and we had a nice fire at sundown.
Took us a while to get it going…folks in next cabin used gasoline and more gasoline!
Couldn’t see the lighthouse as it was rented.
Instead..yuk oven..hadn’t been cleaned in at least a year.
Flyswater provided..lots of flies..cobwebs in rafters.
No heat…had to use wood stove…and oven for heat. Shower..ugh.
Not cheap accommodation…one of those things we laughed about after.

This place is amazing. We had the best time. The cottages are classics. The beds are comfy. The cottages totally old school and clean as a whistle. We took out the kayaks, walked in the water and thought about someday swimming out to the diving platform. But not in early June. If you are passing this way … make a reservation and kick back.
You will not be disappointed!

We stumbled upon this rustic group of cottages with beach and fire pits in front of each cottage. Trails to beaches on other side of the island where you can watch the sunset. Just beautiful. Full kitchen. Briquette bbq. Wood supplied for a fire. You can rent by the week or by the day.

Mt 2 sons, son-in-law and I rented Cottage 8 for a fishing weekend. These cottages are amazing. the perfect getaway for a nice relaxing weekend. The cottage was very clean and has everything you will need. Being 4 males we were sure to forget to pack something, which we did, which they had. I can assure you if you want piece and quiet, wonderful scenery, and a special place to relax this is it. The owners are wonderful to deal with and are sure to make your stay just what you want. I look forward to renting again to take my wife for our aniversary. In case your wondering we got 7 pike, 1 walleye, and 3 perch. :)

... Bruce Bay Cottages is really the place to go. A friend and I stayed there for three nights late last fall, near the end of their season so it was even more quiet since most of the other guests seemed to be hunters or travelers passing through who all arrived late, left early, and were never seen except in the shadows around their fire pits at night. The cottages are rustic, yet clean and comfortable and well-supplied but, as the owner warned when I made the reservation, "you are roughing it." Ours had one large kitchen/dining/sitting room with two sleeping cubicles separated from the "great room" area with curtains. There's no insulation in the cottage, but there's a wood stove that really gets it toasty warm. Everything is very basic-- no tv, no phone, no air condition, no whirlpool tub, but -- yes -- there is indoor plumbing and electricity. (If you're looking for more than that, why would you go to a remote island in the North Woods in the first place?) The cottages sit right on the lake shore and you have your own private fire pit in the front yard -- with plenty of free cut wood nearby (bring matches). It was sensational to build a roaring fire at night to cook out and/or just watch the amazing sky full of stars. Several short hiking trails on the island take you to secluded picnic spots, other tiny beaches, or rocky mounds that are a great place for watching the sunset. There's a former boathouse that now functions as a "lounge" with an ample supply of board games, books, life jackets for the free kayaks, some toys for kids, comfy chairs, and extra kitchen supplies It's a good rainy day hideout if you get cabin fever in your own little cottage. A brisk walk to the next island, takes you to the lighthouse that is also a part of the rental complex. Ask the owners before you venture onto the lighthouse property. But if it isn't rented or the renters haven't arrived yet, the owners seem quite willing to let you look around the grounds. The town closest to the island is Bruce Mines. It's just a village, but full service -- gas, groceries, liquor store, restaurants, post office, telephones, etc., and a few attractions of its own. The stay at Bruce Bay Cottages was a restful, restoring, commune-with-nature experience for us -- two 70+ American women. We would gladly return. We might even be convinced to share this secret treasure with our grandkids. Or we might just guard the secret jealously for our own get-away.

The cottages and lighthouse are in a beautiful location and have quaint charm and everything you need to have a fun outdoors vacation. Hosts Pat and Larry have worked hard to get the buildings, grounds, and trails into shape for guests. Value for the money is excellent, and I would recommend this experience on Lake Superior to those looking for a real lakeside vacation.

We rent the McKay Island Lighthouse every year in late October, and love it. It's quiet, although the lake can get noisy if it's stormy. In addition to exploring the French and McKay Islands, we travel in the area to Sault Ste. Marie, Thessalon, and even farther. It's a vacation spot that one never forgets.
