Detailed Reviews
My wife and I stayed here for 5 days during our honeymoon. We loved it! The view from our room was like a screen saver, just incredible. Honestly one of the best most relaxing places we stayed in in our 3 months in South America. BUT. Not for everyone. It is not in the main tourist area, that's what we liked about it. You will need to take a boat from the ferry wharf around the island about 20 minutes. Quite fun and scenic. It will cost you around 75 Brazil Reals. The location is super secluded, humming birds and butterflys everywhere, so quiet and romantic. Once checked in you'll be located in between the main tourist town and the famous Lopez Mendez Beach. about an hour and a half walk to town. Great fun, through the jungle, but do it before dark, or make sure you bring a flash light. at night time there is no human noises at all and only the moon to light the beach. So here is the part that will either make you love it or hate it. There is no electricity. That's right. This made it great for us as we truely felt like we were at the end of the world a million miles away from everyone. But if you are the sort of person who can not be away from you're laptop, then maybe this place is not for you. The generator only comes on for a couple of hours in the morning and the evening for cooking. The food by the way is fantastic. We really loved this place but also know that we wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Decide if you really want tranquil seclusion or tourist buzz.
Other important tips. Bring money! there are NO ATMs on the island. Anywhere. make sure you know the ferry timetable there is only a few departures each day. and most importantly, don't be impatient, it's Brazil and everybody takes there time with everything, just relax and enjoy.

We stayed here for three nights in April 2010 and had a great stay. It was really nice to stay somewhere 'off the beaten track' and away from the tourist area. You can wonder to the local beach, swim or kayak off their jetty or wander to the famous Lopez Mendes beach, which is 45 minutes away on a clear Rainforest track. On the way to Lopez Mendes, about 20 mins from the pousada, is another beautiful beach with a fantastic floating restuarant - try the freshly squeezly passionfruit juice!
The pousada is very relaxing and it is so nice being able to enjoy the peace and quiet. It was fanastic having breakfast and all our meals overlooking the bay. The hosts are a fantastic couple, with Andrea being a splendid cook and Jean-Louis making the best caipirinha's!

I booked here with my wife (in our late 20's) based on the reviews on tripadvisor. It turned out to be the worst place we stayed at in Brazil and we really can't understand the good reviews it has received after staying there.
We are not fussy travellers, but the 2 things we expect from all hotels/ b&bs is cleanliness and helpful owners. This place did not have either. The room is very small, the sheets on the bed were almost worn through and smelt like sweat, and the old foam mattress had a huge hole in it which meant that only one of us could sleep each night. The corridor outside the room also smelt very dodgy and the patio area seemed dirty. There is no hot water in the shower, so you can't have a nice shower to make yourself feel cleaner.
On the positive side the location is excellent and you couldn't ask for a better view out of the window. The breakfasts are also decent.
It is nice for people who want to be outside of the main town, but this does also restrict you a lot in how much you can do. For example, there are no boats afer dark and you can't walk anywhere because it is pitch black so you have to eat at the pousada, and food is limited. There are no other friendly pousadas along the beach that you can visit after dark.
We would really recommed booking somewhere else, staying at Tapera das Palmas basically ruined our experience of Ilha Grande. The jungle, beaches and walks around the pousada are great, but every afternoon we dreaded going back to our dirty room.

We are not picky travellers but this place really scraped the bottom. In our reservation it said "partly sea view" - we had no sea view, however that was the least of our problems. The room was extremely tiny and we could hardly find a spot for our luggage. The bed was horrible. On the one side it felt like it was broken. The mattress was thin and the shape of the bed made both of us fall into the middle of the bed. Not a pleasant way to spend the night.
The room was extremely hot so we had to open the windows, which meant that lots of mosquitos came in... How hard can it be to put up a mosquito net?!?
The location is quite beautiful but at the same time very difficult. You are basically stuck in Palmas after 5pm and there are not many food options. We didn't eat dinner at our pousada, since they didn't offer any food on the days we were there, but we had the breakfast. Again - not very impressive.
The weirdest part was the techno party. On a Monday! Horrible Music, if you could even call it music. We never understood why...

The pousada offers beautiful views of the ocean and beach. Rooms were clean and very quiet. Meals were very good, with lots of fresh fruit for breakfast. The hosts were very helpful in arranging transportation for us to and from the pousada. Great snorkling off the dock in front of the pousada. The spectacular Lopez Mendez beach is about an hour walk. Highly recommended for outdoorsy people seeking a quiet retreat in a beautiful location.

Tapera das Palmas was exactly the right choice for us. We were looking for a relaxing place and found it there. Friendly staff, an almost family-like atmosphere, a perfect location between Abrao and Lopes Mendes beach, and probably the best Caipirinha we had during our trip to Brasil.

The reviews on tripadvisor encouraged us to book here, but I really wouldn't reccomend it.
the owners are friendly but the location is very average (tucked away in a bay) and the room are very dirty and run down with threadbare sheets. We even had cockraches crawl out from under them!
That is not to say it is all bad, the food was good and the view beautiful, but there are better places to stay on Ihla Grande.
oh, make sure you walk to Lopez Beach, it is seriously the most beautiful in Brazil!

We arrived unexpectedly to Tapera das Palmas and were receieved very warmly by the gorgeous couple Jean-Louis and Andrea. The views, the seclusion, the spacious deck, the great food and most of all the wonderful company of the owners made for an unforgettable stay. We only wish we could have stayed longer...
The closeness to both the jungle, the white sand beach and the turqoiuse waters makes this the closest thing to heaven I have ever been.
Ask Jean-Louis and Andrea about their extremely interesting histories....they will have you captivated all night with their stories! (provided in french, spanish, german or portuguese).
We plan to go back and marry in the tiny church on the beach and celebrate with Jean-Louis and Andrea!!
We recommend this to ANYBODY!

A small and lovely Pousada close to the jungle and just on the beach. Perfect swimming location with clear blue water in a quite bay. A huge veranda with a great view over the bay invites to chill in the hammocks. A place to relax and do nothing but hiking an read. The restaurant offers fantastic food which needs a while but if you have something in that place, than its time. The owners speak english, portuguese, frensch and german.
Attention with the money! Just Cash is accepted and the next ATM is a two hour walk and 1 a one hour boat trip away. Bring enough cause you dont want to leave that place!
