It was a little tricky to get to at first as not many locals had heard of it and when you are carrying your rucksack on your back in the blistering heat, the steep climb does not do you any favours! However, we were not disappointed when we arrived. We had the very first room at the front on the left which has a little porch and hammock and the room was very quirky with a double bed fitted high up and stairs leading up to it. It's not to everyones taste and I did fear that I would literally fall out of bed but it was fine. Even though it was a 5 min walk away from the main area (up hill!!! even the staff said it kills them and they do it everyday!), it was perfect for us as our last hostel was very loud and noisey so it was nice to get away from it.
Round the back there is a fabulous garden that has a stream and mini waterfalls running through it, although beware- I am prone to getting bitten by mosquitos and this is one of those places! It is also home to about 8-10 cats which casually lie basking in the sun and greet you at breakfast- so if you do not like cats or suffer from allergies I would not recommend this place. One cat even slept outside our pousada every night and meowed to come in, probably didn't help that I kept going out to stroke it because I love cats.
The wifi isn't great and even when I used their computers the internet went down several times so I would recommend going to an internet cafe if you urgently need it. The breakfast is fantastic, couldn't fault it! It is set up in the garden so it really is a lovely place to eat and start the day. There was also lots to choose from (I am gluten intolerant) so there was always fresh fruit available aswell as cereal, freshly bakes cakes, cold meats, bread etc.
The biggest down side to this place was that I got my clothes stolen from here. After 16 months of travelling, I had been fortunate enough not to have lost anything or had anything stolen...until now. We had recently been to America and I bought a couple of tops and decided to get them washed as I had been wearing them that week. We requested a laundry service and the next day our clothes were laid neatly on our beds, freshly washed and ironed. Brilliant! However, it was only when I was putting them away that I noticed 3 tops were missing and surprise surprise, it was the new ones.
After asking the main lady (sorry forgot her name) about this, she said she would ask staff and they all denied it. I showed them recent photos and they all began to shout loudly at eachother in their language and in broken english explained to us that they had never seen them before and perhaps I had "imagined" putting them in the wash.
As I had been really enjoying myself here I was really upset because the staff all seemed very friendly and approachable up until then. After that, one staff member who did not speak english would give me very cold looks every time I saw her and that made me very suspicious. The manager was no use saying that he trusts his staff and will not search their rooms and that I was making a big fuss over nothing and at least I hadn't lost a life. Still, when you are travelling your rucksack has all your worldly possessions, otherwise you wouldn't be carrying it!
So unfortunately, we left there really disappointed and angry. Aside from that I would have left a glowing review as I really enjoyed my stay but it spoiled our time there. Ilhe Grande is beautiful and we didn't want to leave....such a shame really. I would say, if you do stay here, lock everything away and don't leave anything on show in your room because at the end of the day the staff stole from me and made me feel very uncomfortable afterwards. I would suggest to the management to put lockers in rooms or something because for me that is a big issue.
Pros: clean, perfect paradise getwaway for couples, great breakfast
Cons: theiving staff, not to well lit at night when walking up the hill, no lockers
The rooms were quite basic but I just loved the tropical garden around the pousada, waking up in the morning and opening the windows to all that greenery and birds singing was lovely!
Breakfast was good (with eggs!) and Klaus, the owner, is a nice and helpful guy.
Do try to get a room in the garden area. If I go back to Ilha Grande I'm definitely going back to this little piece of heaven.
HOWEVER, do not go if you are allergic to cats, there are a few of them in the pousada.
We made reservation via telephone which was confirmed by the person we spoke to - who would charge the first night on the credit card number that we gave him.
Although we had a reservation confirmed with credit card, our reservation was cancelled last minute, leaving us without hotel for the next day.
That was really annoying and is not really professional. If there is any doubt regarding a room being available, it could at least be mentioned.
When we got there, we tried to negociate (to pay only one night) but the manager wasn't there. The employee didn't know about our situation and told us he was going to call the manager. Literally two minutes after this, he came saying that the manager told him we had to let them know 48h before our arrival (And how could we?!).
We understand that we should have arrived on the day we reserved but our bus to Angra was late, so we couldn't take the boat. In addition to that, the pousada was empty so they could have made a gesture.
The worse thing is that we had to pay for the first night, but since there was nobody else at the Pousada they didn't prepare breakfast! So we payed for a room in wich we did'nt even sleep and didn't have anything to eat.
We sent the manager an email a week ago, but we still don't have an answer.
Our stay was no bad, but since we had to pay 320 reais for only one night we keep a bad image of it.
The day we left we wanted to ask them if they had a shower or bathroom that we could use. It was 4h30pm but no one was at the reception. We called and ranged the bell for half an hour but nobody came. As a result we had to leave back to Angra (1h45 boat) and Rio (3h00 bus) dirty and full of sand.
This place has a nice tropical feel and surrounded by nature, you can hear what sounds like a waterfall and there is lots of greenery around. My room had a large rock forming part of the wall which looked great. The room did smell a bit damp, probably from having a natural rock as the wall but that didnt matter too much. The room also had a lovely stained glass front door, and the sun would light it up of a morning creating a lovely view.
Breakfast was good and is worth paying for each morning and is served outside in a pictureque setting. There are a lot of cats around the Cachoeira, they will come and sit on the balcony / patio area of the rooms and are very friendly.
I was disappointed at first that we were not staying by the sea / beach in Ilha Grande but I really liked this place due to the tropical / natural setting which was very peaceful and picturesque.
Pousada da Cachoeira is a wonderful hostel, located around ten minutes from the main harbour. It was tough finding it and walking there with our backpacks, but we were thrilled with the split level 3-bedroom (mini-house almost) we were given. We felt like we were at a lodge in the wilderness with the amount of greenery around!
Breakfast was wonderful and our German host was very friendly and helpful.
The only minus here is the internet... it is very slow unless you use it at the crack of dawn or late at night when the speed is a tad faster than snail-pace!!
