Nestled among the rugged cliffs and dense tropical vegetation of Oaxaca’s Pacific coast is La Boquilla, a protected cove of white sand and still turquoise water. Virtually untouched by development, this pristine and secluded location – where osprey circle lazily over a silent beach – is the perfect setting for vacationers seeking a truly unique retreat experience.Protected by small islets and tall headlands the crescent beach provides a perfect setting for those vacationers seeking a truly unique retreat, for those who would rather hear the whisper of a gentle fan than the whirr of the air conditioner; for those who prefer snorkel and a sea kayak to the roar of a jet ski; for those who wish to practise yoga and sunrise meditation in an eco-sensitive environment and yet appreciate the best of fresh, natural, local foods & international wines in an exquisite water side setting, this may be the place you have always sought...

An absolutely amazing stay at Bahia de la Luna. The location could not be more beautiful. Think forrest meets beach. Love the understated rustic feel. Staff was so friendly and helpful. Shout out to the wonderful wait staff: Mario, Carlos, Elliot, Luis. Ada and Layla were so helpful. And the dinner Chef Jorge! Magnificent. The food was so good. Some reviews said they wanted more selection, but I am gluten free and don't eat red meat and I never had a problem. Offering less means the ingredients are fresh.

We stayed in the Gemini bungalow which was a 2 bedroom up at the very top. Amazing view. We chose it for the privacy, but it really was a hike to get up there. So, good exercise, but if you are not in good shape I would choose something lower. Its so many steps that when you go down for breakfast...you stay down until sunset.

Make sure and get a massage from Connie. Absolutely amazing. She will heal you!

The beach is just perfect for relaxing all day or they have kayaks, stand up paddle and snorkeling gear. They also organized a boat trip and we saw Whales, turtles, flying manta rays and we swam with wild dolphins. A turtle even came up right on the beach during dinner to lay eggs.

My only feedback would be to work on a few minor things in the sustainability department. It really is high time to get rid of plastic straws and toiletries in tiny plastic bottles and soap wrapped in plastic. These small, but important changes can help to keep this beautiful place beautiful.

Cannot recommend it enough.

Spent 8 days at Bahia over the holidays. It is located on a calm little bay, wonderful for swimming and snorkeling (beautiful tropical fish!), not great for beach walks (too small).
Lots of palapas to get out of the sun and catch up on good books as you watch the sea birds and blue water. Everyone on this site raves about the food and it's all true- we are used to a very high standard of restaurant and Jorge manages to create incredibly delicious dinners every night. The seafood is not only prepared exquisitely, but it is super fresh, off the morning boats.

We stayed in 2 different cabanas during our stay. The first 3 days we were right on the beach in Neptuno. We loved it. The last 5 days we were up the hill in Aries. It is 9 flights up a rather rustic hillside stairway. This was a bit of a minus, but also because of the distance from the water, this cabana was much hotter at night, even in late December. Also while both beds were extra firm, the one in Aires was rock hard. They need to put some toppers on those mattresses! Also small details like only one bedside light and no soap dish in the bathroom were slightly irksome.

All that said, Bahia is a really beautiful and tranquil spot, much in the spirit of pre-Tulum/Cancun Mexican beach resorts.

My wife and I were looking for a quiet and secluded beach to have some alone time. The beach at Bahia De La Luna was the perfect spot. Although we were not completely alone, it sure felt like it at times. The hotel is very small so during the week, when other hotel guests would take tours to other beaches, we were all alone on the beach. The chef and his team made sure our meals were always delicious and the staff is friendly and always has a smile. We'll definitely return!

Incredibly unwelcoming rude manager/receptionist who really ruined our stay.
Upon arrival we were barely greeted, we were not told about any breakfast, we weren't told anything about the hotel, it was as if she was surprised we were even there. We walked up to our hilltop room which was a LONG way up some steep steps. Our room was very very hot, and there was a mini fridge but they hadn't even thought to put any water in there knowing its a tough walk up in that heat.
We are used to staying in pretty basic places and we aren't fussy people, but this hotel is high end prices for Mexico, so you'd expect more than the service we got at this hotel. We barely slept on our first night because the room was so uncomfortably hot. We considered checking out early the following morning but decided instead to ask for an extra fan for the room. We asked the manager for a fan and she told us that there would be one in our room after dinner. We walked a LONG way up the steps after dinner, incredibly hot, and there was no extra fan there as promised. We couldn't believe it after we were promised it would be there and it was too long to walk all the way down and up again. We wouldn't have stayed the second night if this would have been the case, and we spent a second sleepless night after the manger let us down.
We checked out the next morning, and the manager said someone would come up to our hilltop room to bring our suitcase down as there were so many steep steps. We waited for over half an hour and no one came, in the end we just had to do it ourselves. She again purposely promised something that didn't happen. It was like the manager was actually trying to ruin our stay, as if she held something against us. I have never in my life had such awful service, you could pay a quarter of the price and stay somewhere better in Mexico. We paid $30 a night elsewhere and had incredible service and thoughtful extras like bottled water in the room.
The manager lets this hotel down. It really ruined our stay and I regret that we wasted 2 precious nights of our time in Mexico

We really enjoyed our stay at Bahia de la Luna. Came with my partner, we never felt uncomfortable. Our cottage was clean and the bed was perfect. We stayed in Casa Ivan which was off by itself and oceanfront, very relaxing and quiet. The included breakfast was nice as well as items for purchase from the menu and the lunch menu was good we enjoyed everything we tried but the real treat here are the dinners served by candle light at tables set around the beach, the chef comes around during the day about 4:00 pm to give you the choices for the day. The beach is amazing and the water is nice and warm, we didn't leave for the four days we were there also there is plenty of shade to hang out in. We used the kayaks and just enjoyed swimming and relaxing at this wonderful gem. The staff are very nice and welcoming and really make this place special. If you want a unique, unpretentious and amazing experience then come here. remember to follow the instructions they give you after booking and book transport through them for easy arrival. We stayed in Huatulco for a couple of days before so we could arrive during the day.

If you are looking for a 5 star beach resort with all the trimmings, this is not for you. This is more of a rustic, romantic place to just chill among nature and enjoy the beach, ocean, other travellers and relax. We stayed in the Pluton cabana which was literally right on the beach. No stairs or steps. The room was comfortable and we really did not spend much time in the room besides to sleep. Loved the sound of the ocean and the breeze while you slept.
The meals were delicious, especially the evening dinner on the beach. My wife and I loved the different meals prepared by the Chef George or Horge.
The road was initially a bit of a challenge but after you get used to it, it wasn't that much of a deal. We had rented a car so we did go and explore 3 days of the 7 we were there. Actually it most probably keeps the beach a bit of the beaten path and adds to the charm, otherwise you may get too many visitors!!
The owners George & Lauda were very welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed their company and hospitality. This is a bit of paradise in this part of Mexico and would definitely consider returning and recommending it to others.

Our staff tries to provide the experience you described, a balance of attention and restraint, and yes, the road goes serve as a “ filter” to keep the beach as uncrowned as you found it. Thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Our expectations low, we came to Bahia de La Luna on a group trip our friends planned, only to be enamored by friendly, attentive service, fantastic food (important since the beach is remote) and charming comfortable accommodations. Palm roofing doesn’t always denote this level of service with fresh sheets every day on the bed and a clean room. Food pumping out of the kitchen is top notch fare. Wonderful drinks delivered to your chair. Stay a week or more. You won’t forget it.

if you are looking for a relaxing vacation in paradise, you cannot do better. simple but comfortable accommodations right on the most beautiful beach you are likely to have ever seen. it is very private due to the challenging approach road. small tourist boats stop by throughout the day bringing swimmers and others wanting to enjoy a lunch at the restaurant, but they never made it feel like a crowd. the staff is incredible; attentive and friendly, they all work very hard to make your visit as perfect as it can be. the food is excellent. no need to leave the beach to eat. talk about fresh fish...i had the best sashimi i have ever eaten, as well as fresh oysters that i watched a diver gather from the bay. turtles use the beach for nesting, and we had several nights of helping newly hatched babies get into the sea, as well as watching mama lumber up the beach to lay her eggs just a few dozen meters from our dinner table! we also saw whales on several different occasions. paddle boards and kayaks are available for exploring. the owner of the hotel is a mezcal afficiando, and they offer a wide variety of this local spirit, as well as other deliciously crafted cocktails. my favorite is the gordini! jorge campos can often be found holding court on the beach around sunset, (along with his beautiful wife lauda) and it makes for a lovely evening of fun and lively conversation. yoga in the morning, massage in the afternoon, siestas, swims, nearly perfect weather year round...i cannot say enough. just go, and maybe we'll see you there!

We stayed in this property for only a couple of days but we definitely will come back. It makes you feel you are actually in Mexico, feels traditional. Staff welcomes you always with a smile and are extremely helpful and the owner makes you feel like home. Excellent food, romantic dinners, and views to the Pacific to die for. It is located by one of the few beaches in the area that are fully swimmable. Choose this spot for a few days away from everything, just to relax by the beach. Choose one of the cabinas on the mountain if you wish to enjoy beautiful view. The cocktails could be better but this only a very minor setback in a special place

The fact that you have found bahia de la luna and are checking these reviews already puts you among the lucky ones. This gem is tucked away down a steep, rutted road, providing an essentially private perfect crescent beach. The accommodations are simple, but clean and well maintained, and almost all have amazing views. There is no a/c or hot water, but nice ocean breezes, and the water is not so cold as to be unpleasant. For a single couple or small family, casa Ivan, right on the beach, is probably the best choice. Our favorite is saturno, which has two separate, large bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom, and a beautiful shared deck and kitchenette. You can count on seeing see turtles nesting on the beach almost every night, and will likely see some babies hatching too. The bay is wonderful for swimming, and also has decent snorkeling. We have seen whales passing by both times we’ve visited. The hotel has snorkeling gear, as well as kayaks and stand up paddle boards you can use anytime. THE FOOD!!! The food is so fresh and delicious. You will not tire of the menu. The chef is top notch and offers nightly specials depending on what was picked up from the market that day. The masseuse is very talented and intuitive to where you need worked on. Do not miss her wonderful caring touch! We were fortunate enough to have a yoga and breath work session offered during our stay that was a wonderful healing experience. There is a nice yoga pavilion and mats available for when classes are held. The mezcal! The selection of mezcal here is impressive. We were treated to a very educational mezcal tasting experience that helped us to enjoy the delicious cocktails offered even more. THE STAFF!!! The staff is so friendly, attentive and helpful, that you will feel you’ve made new friends by the time you leave. In case you can’t tell, this place is about as close as you can come to a perfect relaxing beach getaway. If you need a tv and a/c, it’s not for you, but if you want to unplug and be pampered in an absolutely gorgeous setting, it cannot be beat. We stayed for a full week both times we visited, and that was the perfect amount of time. You are lucky to have found this place on the internet, so close the deal and get down there!
