Positives:
Mayanabo continues to make improvements. When I think back to our first visit in 1995 to now, it is leaps and bounds better.
The staff are friendly as always, they do a great job. From the front desk to housekeeping, dining room, bar, coffee bar, beach restaurant and bar, beach staff and of course animation. The gardens are well tended and the grounds spic and span. Hats off to the ground keeping crew. If there is an issue with your room, maintenance will gladly try to help. Let's not forget Angela the masseuse, many of our friends can't wait to book a relaxing massage with her.
The beach is still a beautiful place where you can walk from resort to resort and further. Sometimes the tractor hasn't been out to clean up the washed up seaweed but it gets done.
The coffee bar is a favourite place of many to relax or have a light lunch or snack. They work hard too and always a smile. The cappuccinos are good. You can have a liqueur in it and they also arrive with cinnamon or chocolate to sprinkle on top. The churro bar is close by as well.
Our room was comfy and clean and the AC worked good.
Management is great.

Negative:
We were aware when we booked about the long trip from Holguin to Playa Santa Lucia. The flights were not going into Camaguey which is about a 90 min drive by bus. From Holguin it is approx 3.5 hours with a stop in Las Tunas for a potty break and you can buy a drink there. The road is paved for part of it but there is a also a rather long stretch that is dirt and full of huge potholes. Either way you do get there and we were aware. Hopefully the flights to Camaguey will resume at some point. By the way we flew out of Toronto.

We look forward to going back, Mayanabo is our cottage, a place of relaxation and friends where you don't have to do anything or you can keep busy with all the things available to you. We have introduced many people to Mayanabo over the years and they too are regulars now !!! We will keep bringing people to Mayanabo.

See you again soon Hopefully :)

We just got back on Sat.pm from Club Mayanabo after a weeks stay, and we would both agree that this resort is great value for your dollar. The resort is older though, and could use some work done to it, but you'll never find a cleaner resort.
We stayed in building one, and the rooms were smaller than usual. This didn't cause any problems because you're only in it to change clothes and sleep. I like tv when I'm going to sleep, and there were a few channels to pick from. The problem was you could hardly see because the picture is so snowy. Very minor though. The room was immaculate, and served it's purpose. The maids are very thorough.
The pool is quite large. Great for water volleyball, and lots of room still for anyone not playing. The bartenders at the pool bar were very nice, and I didn't notice any problems getting waited on as some stated in previous reviews. Some times we just don't recognize that the problem may not be with others, but ourselves and our attitudes. We did tip, but that didn't give us any more preferential treatment than those who did not. The tiles are EXTREMELY slippery around the pool though. Very dangerous. There were always lots of loungers, and tables, around the pool. No shade though, and as this was Apr22-29, it was very, very hot. On the beach there was always a cooling breeze, but not at the pool. The mosquito's also kept us from being outside at night any longer than we had to be. They sprayed, sometimes twice daily, but it didn't seem to make any difference once the sun started to go down. There were no pool or beach activities(games, dancing, etc..), perhaps because they were closing down on the 29th or not. The music around the pool was nice.
There is about a 3 minute walk from the rooms to the beach. There were always lots of palapas available. There were about 2-300 people there, so it was not crowded. Someone had brought a guitar, and almost everyday there was a caleigh on the beach or the beach bar. Almost a good thing, because for the first time since we've been travelling, there was no music on the beach!! Too quiet!!! The beach bar is at the end of a long pier(as seen in pictures), but it is pretty iffy at best. It needs alot of work done to it. The bartenders at the beach bar were very nice as well, and musical. The older gentleman sang all the time, and Mario played guitar, and a couple of other things as well. Sometimes he would join the musicians at the table, and play along.
The beach is nice. Sandy. The shoreline is rocky, and the the ocean is very grassy. You have to wear water shoes. During low tide you can walk quite a distance into the ocean. You can snorkel there, but the better viewings are down at the Gran Club Sta. Lucia. Again, perhaps because this was the last week, there were no activities at the beach. If all you wanted to do was sit around and drink, this was definately the spot for you.
There is an internet room. There were 2 computers, not 1, but the problem with them is they were only in spanish and hard to figure out. By the time you got online, you had already used up several minutes. But it was only 6 pesos for an hour online.
There is a shop by the towel room. It had a lot of nice things. Local pottery, art, carvings, jewellry, etc.. There was also a shop downstairs by the medical room. It was ok. I don't think they were keeping things stocked very well because it was the last week. The first 2 days, they only carried mineral water. Then they got in just water. The water bottles could be refilled at different areas around the resort, but it was iffy at best. One refill may be fine, the next the water would taste swampy. There is a shop at the Carocal resort, and then there are shops at the GCSL. There were a lot of nice things there. Between the GCSL and the Carocal resort, there is kind of a mini strip mall type thing. But they were musty, not very original products, and always closed for lunch. Alcohol was as cheap or cheaper at the airport. The only thing was you may not find what you wanted.. There is shopping at the airport as well, souvenir wise.
The food was not bad. Again, it was the last week, so they may not have been getting in supplies. How else to explain carrots, beans, sweet potatoes, hot dogs, fries for breakfast? The omlettes were good, the poor woman had to use a spatula with no handle on it at times. There was no bacon. The potatoe dishes were excellant, they had beef a couple of times that was very good, but they had more liver, heart, goat than we would have liked. They had something that looked like chicken, but when you ate it, it tasted like ham. Most meals were fine through the week, but a couple of days, they were just edible. The bread was good, desserts were usual for Cuba, no ice cream the last 2 days. The only time you were offered drinks seemed to be at the end of your meal or if you were seated in Daniels area. You had to get your own drinks/coffees. The waiters were quick to take your plates when you were done eating though.
The staff at Club Maya are very good. They take a lot of pride in what they do, they're always very nice, and try to be as helpful as they can.

I just returned from Manayabo a couple of days ago. The trip was just great! The hotel was relaxing and modest. The facilities were clean and safe. I traveled as part of a group of 10 and we were all in our mid 20's to mid 30's. We fit in perfectly! The resort itself is quiet and relaxing, yet a few minute walk down the road there is lots of dancing and party fun to be found. The service on the resort was great. All of the workers were very helpful, fun, and friendly. They are like a family and ensure that everyone is having fun. The tours offered were of good value. The food was good, and as far as Cuba is concerned, I hear it was great! I would go back for sure and recommend this resort to anyone. The only thing to watch out for is the pool deck is very slippery when wet.

We just returned from one week at the Club Amigo Mayanabo and overall had a very positive experience. Considering the money you pay to go to this place it's fantastic. Even though there were some things I could see annoying certain people, I personally loved it.
BEACH-
Look like a postal card, white sand, palm trees and the best spot for Santa Lucia where the most of the beach you have there, you have to walk 300m to get water to your legs... At this club, you have water to your shoulder at the Pier (Beach Bar on water).
Activities center on beach are open every day and free for kayak, windsurfing, pedal-boat, sail boat, snorkeling equipment and catamaran. You can rent a sea-doo for 1$ per minute, a real joke for a lot of fun!!! Or ask the guy from the activities center to bring you at the Coral reef barreer (one of the bigger in the world) for a incredible snorkeling trip. The Coral Reef are at 2km from the beach. The Bar tender Mario at the beach bar are a singer and also a musician, somethime, after the working day, his friends reach him at the Pier beach bar and they play unplugged latino music, a real pleasure for your ears!!!!

RESTAURANT-
A good buffet resto are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner time, wine and beer free. Ask to be serv by Orlando, a very pleasant and funny guy. The food are OK, considering their poor resource. Nobody starved and there was always a good selection of vegetables, meat, fish and rice. A snack bar are open at 11h00am for the day, to eat something else, hamburger, pizza ... A Italian resto are open for dinner only but it's not included and expensive for nothing. If you are fastidious, find a resort with more Restaurant "à la carte".

ROOM-
Very clean with a amazing roomaids service, every day we have a surprise with the towels, create swans, hearts and different stuff with always fresh flowers.

ACTIVITES-
A lot of activities are plan every day on the pool area, and very nice show every night, the animation staff are very friendly. Many excursions are available, snorkeling trip, flamingo tour, Iguana Island, Camaguey tour, we enjoy some of them but never see flamingo...
You can have a carriage ride in the small village, 5$ pesos per person. Interesting activities where we bring clothes, chocolates and toys for the poor childrens in the street, my kids have enjoy a lot doing this sharing with Cuban childs. Eduardo, the carriage rider invit us to his home in Coco Beach to eat langust. For only 10$ per person, we have the ride in carriage, the afternoon on the beautiful beach of Coco beach, and a huge langust for dinner in the Eduardo house, what a trill !!!! At Coco Beach you can have horseback riding for very cheap, and the snorkeling are awesome!!! If you want to do the Iguana Island tour, bring bugs repealant spray.

POOL-
Nice and very clean, not too crowdy. The best place to meet other peoples. The pool bar are a busy one, Mike Cruise (Tom Cruise/ Cocktail) give a show with every single drink!

TIPPING-
Tip as you feel you should. We always tipped according to service received. It's an all-inclusive but for the price of a few dollars, now and then, you may receive service better than expected. And the staff have very small incomes. Bring clothes, books, toys, shoes, it's well appreciate in the village with their poor situation. The dental pasta, soap, shampoo are very expensive for them to purchase, so we leave everythings after the week to the gardener, who never get tips.

I'll certainly be back there soon!!! 40% of the tourist have been there before and they back again, now I now why!!! My favorite place ever = Santa Lucia !!!!

We went there 2 couples aged 30-32 and had no expectancies at all for the price we paid with GoTravelDirect... This way we were certain not to be disappointed...But to our surprise, it was more than acceptable, in fact it was just perfect for us!!! You just never go there expecting a 5 star resort, but if hot sunny days, beach and fun people are all you ask for, then it is the right place for you...
First, we flew with Zoom Airlines (right on time, good service, hot meal, free wine) and Gotraveldirect offered great service at our arrival on the island. We checked in on our way to the hotel in the bus, so we did not need to wait forever at the front desk.
The rooms were small but really clean. We had 2 twin beds that we pushed together to make it a king...(the lady was kind enough to put us a king kit of sheets). Hot water was never a problem, neither was the water pressure. Air conditioning worked well too.
The site was not too big (225 rooms in 3 2-stories high buildings) and had lovely flowers a bit everywhere and really close to the beach (100 feet). Internet service (1hour for 6 CUC to be used anytime during your week), bank (offering better rate than the airport), little store (chips, cookies cigars(the alcool and cigars are cheaper at the airport in Camaguey when you return)
The pool is clean (couldn't be better)but the surroundings are REALLY SLIPPERY so watch out!!!
Beach is a lovely turquoise with white sand (not floury though, and with a bit of seagrass)
Staff (Osiris and Alexis) the bartenders are nice guys and do a great job (tip them at the beginning of your week and you'll have great service...The G.O. keep you busy for a great part of the day if you want, but if you prefer to rest, they won't bother you too much. They're really friendly and kind.
Activities: the bikes of the hotel are in great condition (old, but ok), are just perfect to go for a ride in the small village of Santa Lucia (where you can hand out dolls or small trucks, coloring pencils or gums and chocolates to the kids (they'll love it). horse ride 5CUC for 1 hour on the beach with the guide. (really fun, but wear jeans and good shoes...)Snorkelling in front of the Caracol (free) was simply beautiful. Catamaran(free)(go with Joel, he is realy interesting and a real pro. He might take you on the other side of the coral reef if you bring him hamburgers and gin from the hotel...)Windsuring (free)(as there is great wind...), horse and carriage to the Playa Coco (25 CUC for 4 people for the entire afternoon). Playa coco is nice but watch for broken glass in the sand... Volleyball, aquagym, stretching, dancing, waterpolo... all great activities to keep you busy...
Discothèques: The Jungle (great music 5CUC open bar, at Gran Club Santa Lucia (G.Os go there).
Food: good for Cuba. great variety with a cook preparing pastas and omelettes and meat in front of you. We even had huge all-you-can eat scampies one night at the buffet. A la carte restaurant was so-so. Not worth it... The snack bar is a good alternative during the day (good to prepare hamburgers for the people that work for the watersports on the beach!!!)
Weather: if you get like us, well you'll think it is perfect.
Shopping: go around in the other 3 hotels, you can find nice stuff, but there's not much... a bit disappointing...
TIPS:
bring a thermos cup (keeps your pina colada fresh longer)
watch ou when you walk around the pool (slippery)
We surely recommend it to anyone, as we would go back anytime!!! Thanks to all the staff...

We just returned from Santa Lucia yesterday and wanted to submit a review right away. Club Amigo Mayanabo (also known as Club Maya) is a little gem of a resort. It is clean, the food is decent, the staff is eager to please, and the setting is lovely... what more do you need?

Rooms- not elegant but clean and comfortable. Try to stay in "building 1". It has been updated

Beach -Beautiful, located on world's second largest coral reef. Bring swim shoes because it is a little rocky getting in the water.

Food- remarkably good with a wide variety and fresh.

Activities- Santa Lucia is NOT a bustling tourist centre. There are sufficient activities to keep you busy. Water sports, horseback riding, excursions etc.

Staff- Hardworking and helpful.

This a great place to go and relax. That's what we were looking for and we found it at Club Maya.

Club Mayanabo is Amazing!! I fell in love all over again with my girlfriend on this trip. We met a really fun couple that made our trip so much more fun and exciting. So exciting we have been hanging out with them in Canada ever since. The staff was great, the people were friendly, rooms a litle small but clean and really how much time do you want to spend in the room. I have to say this resort is great for couples and for singles to go and have a great time. The bars close early but there's a club called the jungle which serves until 2am. The resort was beautiful and the pool was amazing. Who ever rated this place a 3 star had no clue. The food was good, the only thing you may have a problem with is the mystery chicken and beef selecion. Stick to the pasta and breakfast meals and youll be fine. Trust me if you get a chance go to Coco beach! It is about a 20 minute carrage ride and it will be the most beautiful site you ever seen. We stopped at the mans who gave us the buggy ride's house and his family prepared the best lobster meal you will ever find. I will never eat lobster again unless Im in Cuba!! If anyone has any questions email me at ........................... yaba97@hotmail.com

I stayed at the Club Amigo Mayanabo from March 12-19, 2006. The resort itself was beautiful. The rooms are smaller than usual but who's really there for the accomodations?!? There was not ALOT to do, but enough to keep you busy, unless you're a Coppertone baby like me, then all you need is the sun (which you will get a lot of). Many tours were available, ranging in price from 25 CUC (convertible pesos) to 54 CUC. To give you a better idea of price, $100 CDN gave me 76 CUC. The hotel (and most shops) accept VISA but at a penalty of 11.24% tax. Money can be exchanged at the hotel (the hotel offers a better rate than the airport). A train came by the hotel twice a day and for only 2 CUC would take you on a half hour tour around Santa Lucia. It stops a few times for the local kids, so bring gum, candy, toy cars, etc. Be prepared though, there are lots of kids the train doesn't stop for so, even though it's heartbreaking, the only way to get goodies to those kids is to throw it at them. Maybe little goodie bags? Another great idea is to prepare goodie bags for the sweet ladies that keep your room clean. Candies, gum, razors, eye makeup, tampons and hair accessories are all great options for these ladies. Perhaps even the magazines you purchased on the way to Cuba? There are dancers at Club Amigo Mayanabo from Sunday to Thursday. Other nights the guests at the resorts become the stars of the show! There wasn't much shopping to be done. A few little shops at the hotel. If you have the wristband to Club Amigo you are welcomed at the other hotels along the road so you could pop in there and do some shopping, it all appeared to be more of the same. The beach was a disappointment. The sand is cluttered with fallen leaves of palm trees which become dry and rough, so the white sands were covered with not so nice leaves. However, the pool at Club Amigo Mayanabo made up for it! I'd give this resort a 4 1/2 out of 5. The only reason for the loss of the 1/2 was the food. Although I know it's not a real vacation without bad buffet, because there was no food warming all the food in the buffet was cold quickly. However, there is a grill at every meal offering a variety of things from pasta to fish, etc.

P.S. You need 25 CUC to leave Cuba! Very important! You have to pay it at the airport or else you can't go home!

Let me begins by saying OLA!! to RoDD and Raylene, Pearl and Gary, Andrea and Tony, Michel and Rudy, a few of the people that I met in Cuba. This was my first trip to Cuba and I was a little nervous going as I thought that safety may be an issue. Well let me be the first to tell you that safety is not an issue at this resort. The locals are wonderful and more than accommadating. The hotel is an old one, but spotlessly clean. I was however disappointed with the food and the mixes in the drinks, but that was not enough to ruin my time. The atmosphere was quiet, people with small children and an older crowd are the majority of the clients here. So if you're looking for more night life you may want to try the Grand Santa Lucas.
Our group consisted of 7 women from Cape Breton and I believe that anyone who was there the week we were, can tell you who we were. LOL we had a blast. we laughed the whole week and I have some pictures to prove it. I would recommend this resort highly and I can't wait to go back to Cuba next year.

My wife and I had a lovely time in this resort and we do not have anything negative to say considering the price we pay (please peoples, you did not pay for a 4 1/2 stars hotel, so do bring your expectations down) Food was not bad and you will always find something you like. Rooms were very clean every day. Staff were very nice.
We enjoyed the piano bar (open 11:00 to 12:45) with mrs Yarima (piano) and mrs Ayren (flute). Those 2 girls created a nice and relax ambience and you can leave tips by leaving some money on the piano (it is just a few dollars from you but a lot for them)

We will go back to this resort (good value for the money)

There’s no pool bar; it’s true. I strongly recommend this place, though! The quietness I found here is perfect to stay away form the real world for a while!
