We stayed one night with our baby boy and had a great experience. The house is beautiful with a lovely garden. Our room was clean and homely with a lovely crib set up for the baby. Rachel was fantastic. She gave us lots of information on the area and the history of the house. She took time to show us around and explain everything. The breakfast she made was delicious, especially the hot cakes! I would highly recommend staying here as it’s also a great location for reaching lots of the lovely sights and activities in the area.
My wife and I wanted a place to stay which wasn't too close to the common tourist attractions. This was a perfect choice. Our host regaled us with the history of this converted home and did everything she could to ensure our stay was perfect. The room was warm and comforting, and the water in the shower was hot, which isn't always the case in Europe. Breakfast was wonderful, including a regional speciality. We are considering coming back for a longer visit to the area just based on the kindness of our stay here; of course we would stay here for any future visit.
You cannot look at the craftsmanship and landscaping of this surprisingly terrific B&B without feeling joy. Let alone Teresa Durao's infectious smile and warmth, and not be super happy. First of all I questioned why would someone build such a business in such a place? It is in a somewhat remote small farming village without much of any tourist attractions and/or commercial activity. But many smart travelers are looking just for that kind of experience away from the push and hassle of the big city tourist grinds. Well this is it!! Fabulous architecture using huge stones and finely crafted wood doors and windows add to great decorations. Teresa provided a taste of her husbands locally produced, wine, some home cooked bread and cheese just to start check-in. Breakfast with local products, Teresa's ham& eggs, her pastries wonderful. Lots of hot water for shower, strong free WiFi and onsite secure parking make this remote gem a total winner.…
Tasteful decorated, provide common areas very well equipped. Breakfast is sublime. Very good for a relaxing escape. People are very nice. We had the opportunity to participate in a game card championship - Sueca - occoring in the village. 5 stars :-)
We stayed just one night in Retiro da Avó Lídia, but it was more than enough to recognize the qualities that make this such a highly rated gem. Located in a valley in between the mountains, this cozy 4 bedroom house, tastefully restored with clear reverence for its past, traditions and ancestry is not by any means large or ostentatious, but equiped with both the conforts of the modern age as well as time-honored cuisine, with locally sourced ingredients including jams, teas and in our opinion, the star of the show, the Açorda de Peixe, served inside hollowed bread. All in all, very tempting place to return to and one we'd absolutely encourage other couples and even large groups (there's the possiblity of renting the entire house for a time) to visit.
