This hotel is located about 30 minutes along the coast from Taranto. The hotel is right across the road from the beach, a section of which is reserved for private use by the Gabbiano guests. This beach has beds and umbrellas which can be hired for about €3.
The hotel decor is very modern and stylish, with lots of marble everywhere.
Among the facilities available are a lovely restaurant, swimming pools, a
covered car park and a children's club. Both the bedroom and bathroom were very spacious and they were all equipped with the usual modern conveniences. The service is excellent and all the receptionists speak very good English. The hotel is located in a lovely quiet area with local bars and cafes all within a short walking distance. It offers fantastic value at just €70 a room.

Yes, the season was over so the town and indeed the coast were like a ghost area! I liked the hotel as soon as I arrived and was impressed with the entrance, garage parking, lovely pool and a bright and clean reception area.

First impressions are important in life in business or in pleasure. Here I had one of the warmest receptions I have had and all thanks to the smiling, delightful Maria Elena. What a wonderful lady….she is a true asset to the hotel. Her colleague was aslo charming and friendly.

My room was as expected…no great shakes but clean and with a decent bathroom. There is a new wing where I believe the rooms are nicer and more modern.
Sleep was a mixed affair as fellow guests dragged their luggage and themselves on stilettoes along the tiled corridor at 07.00 in the morning. This is not the hotels fault but then tiles on a bedroom corridor are not a good idea!

WiFi? Mmmmm! It’s a problem! It is so slow as to be pretty useless.

Breakfast is taken downstairs in the breakfast dining room. There are in fact three dining rooms! I like my breakfast very much and is in fact my main meal for the day.
Breakfast at the Gabbiano is very poor and basic with a simple buffet of the usual (3) cereals, some yoghurt, whole fruits (3), small croissants and sliced bread. No fruit salad, no good bread, no pasteries, no cakes, no proper croissants, etc, etc.

There is a lovely adult pool with plenty of good loungers and a kids pool besides. A feature for this hotel is the really pretty beach right opposite with a direct walkway from the hotel. In summer the hotel lays out chairs and parasols for their guests. Nice touch!

No problem for dining with a couple of great restaurants nearby.

Yes. Recommended even allowing for the issues such as the poor breakfast and no WIFI.

I would for sure return.

I recently stayed at this hotel with a bus tour. We visited different places and used it as our base. The breakfast buffet was delicious and generous. The only thing that surprised me all the time is the fact that the coffee in Italy is generally so good but at breakfast they give you a machine that makes horrible coffee??? I don't understand. At night we also had buffet style dinners with a wonderful variety of choices, different every day. The staff working there was very friendly and helpful and multilingual. The rooms were simple but OK. There seem to be a lot of stray dogs in the area and they kept on barking ALL night. It was hard to sleep. The sandy beach is right across the street and also reachable through a tunnel. On weekends it gets busy.

Absolutely overrated and not worth the price. Spending more than 3000 euro for such hotel is really disappointing. Paying about the same amount of money, we've been to other hotel which was way better and efficient compared to this . Here are just some of the examples of their services and structure flaws.

The play area for small children was really poor, consists of a few plastic slides, see saw, etc. Definitely doesn't meet the standard of a 4 stars family hotel. The animation team was friendly and engaging. The staff did the best they could with limited play area and structure.

To use the beach towels they required 100 euros deposit which is absurd. I understand the need of deposit perhaps 30 euro but not 100 euro on credit card and to received it back after 7 days. Plus a charge 3 euro for every change of towel. This is an unacceptable service by a 4 stars hotel.
Swimming cap is required to use the swimming pool and it wasn't mentioned during the booking. Thus we had to purchased it from the hotel, if they would have mentioned it earlier we would have brought ours and avoid buying the poor quality swimming caps they're selling.

Food was just ok not consistent in quality, some days the food was delicious other days too salty or bland plus they tend to recycled the leftover food.

It's stated alcoholic and non alcoholic aperitives are included everyday from 1900 to 1930 however on a Friday they offered only non alcoholic beverages and alcoholic beverages were on payment as they claimed it's a Aperol night and they're offering spritz with a discounted price.

Overall, there was a lack of communication. For example when we first arrived at the hotel and asked the lady at the parking entrance if we could leave our luggages as we're still early for check in. We were told there isn't any space and we should leave our luggages in the car which was not the case. At the reception , we were told we may leave our luggages without any issue as they have a spacious room downstairs.

This will definitely be our first and last experience with this hotel. We truly thank most of the staff as they did their best and was helpful especially the animation team and the barista Angelo, even with very limited resources.

Positives:
Staff very kind and helpfully; great pool and tennis court; private beach; convenient parking area; room size; nice and well mantained garden areas;
Negatives:
Rooms smell of mould; there must be a huge septic tank and everywhere, especially in the morning there is a very unpleasant smell; bathrooms require update; very limited selection of tv channels with very poor images; no flat screen; plastic chairs in the bar area outdoor are not up to a so called 4 stars;
Ok but to improve:
Quality of food; selection of savory in the breakfast buffet.

We stayed in Gabbiano from June 12th till June 22nd 2011.
The welcome in the hotel was very good. We were shown to our rooms, which were a bit dissapointing to us. Especially the bathroom could be improved. The shower is seperated with a showercurtain, which I've nerver seen in a hotel before. It looks a bit dark too. The walls are very thin, very annoying when you have the only fighting couple of the hotel in the room next to you. If the guests from the room next to you are watching tv, you can hear everyting. Breakfast(which was to poor for us: no fresh fruit, no bread, only toast, probably typical Italian) was served in a dark, not inviting cellar. And some people of the animationteam should understand that no is no.
On the upside, the staff, and really everyone of them ,is unbelievable friendly. From the receptionists the waiters, animation team, allways a kind word and good service. I can`t understand the French review that says otherwise. Trying to speak an Italian word of two opens doors in Italy. The swimmingpool and garden look very nice and the private beach is very beautifull. The food in the restaurant was very good(with much variety), and the winelist with only Puglian wines made it complete. The room was cleaned spotlessly everyday.
Too bad the highseason seems to start on June 20th, which means that we never had breakfast or dinner outside. Which we like when we go on holiday to the south.
In the area are a few bars and restaurants, most of them started to open the weekend before we left. Too bad.
All together, I would describe Gabbiano as a 3+ star hotel, the rooms take it down for me. The food and the staff deserve their 4 stars though.

We stayed here to explore Puglia & had a great time . There was a la carte meals served on some nights & buffet meals on others but the service & food were good . After the meal there was entertainment in the form of a quiz / karaoke etc all in Italian but we joined in each night & loved it . The staff & Italian guests really appreciated us making an effort & we made some friends . The swimming pool was a fabulous place to relax before dinner after a day out exploring . Loads of fab places to see eg Alberobello & the trulli , Matera , Taranto etc

Collazione - breakfast was served in the cave.. can you imagine such a nice infrastructure they have ??? also the food for breakfast was not fresh and did not give you any appetise.
The dinner (cena) served at the table had not taste - at the GALA DINNER we received the local plate of ricotta served with a spoon drashed on our dishes... all the other plates also tastless and not dressed as it should be - this is not a 4 (****) stars hotel ! I had even an indigest - the muscles they served had a muffy scent! Also at the bar you could not get any properly served dish.. (only cheese and bacon and bacon with cheese).
We had to go out for breakfast and dinner - luckily that we found another place (also with 4 stars) but with the level as it should be .. (Hotel Il Grillo) - so we had to pay for this extra (so on top of what we had paid beforehand when booking this hotel)
The so-called confortable rooms for which we additionnaly paid did not have more space than the normal rooms (no bath..) We felt being left alone as it was the end of the season. No space available anymore from the hotel at the beach..
One positive point was that people were friendly and polite.
Sorry but this hotel does not deserve 4 stars.
No recommendation at all.

Response from MichelangeloGabbiano, Proprietario at Nicolaus Prime Il Gabbiano Hotel
Responded Oct 1, 2012
Dear Mr Riet I'm really sorry to read this criticism only after your check out. We always accept all the criticism because they allow us to constantly improve, fortunately these are a small minority. In particular I want to contradict you about our breakfast room (a “cave” for you). I have no idea why you call it in this way even it is used by thousands of people every year and no one has ever had your same impression. In addition, the food served for breakfast, lunch or dinner is prepared every day, expressly with the freshest local products. If you need different things or in case of something is missing or if you have a special request, we provide immediately to prepare as soon as we are asked. The Gabbiano Hotel is mainly valued for the quality and variety of our cuisine as you can easily check the other reviews and the continuing certificates of recognition. The Comfort rooms are more spacious, more comfortable with balcony and walk-in closet and all rooms are equipped with shower. The decor of our hotel follows a simple Mediterranean style because we stay in front of the sea. If it doesn’t meet your taste I'm sorry, but meets the taste of thousands of other customers every year. Certainly you chose to make the holiday at the end of the season and in this period could happen that some services are not running but everything is fully described in the brochure and on the website. Our private beach was open and running until Sunday, September 23, day after the beach was always guaranteed but without services, such as logic dictates at this time. It was enough to ask the availability of 1 umbrella and 2 sunbeds and we proceeded to place them elsewhere in the beach, as we did with other guests in the hotel that we have asked. I'm sure if we had the chance to see you again as our guests we would be able to change your mind and demonstrate the validity of our offer. Friendliness

I spent a few days in Pulsano for vacations but I had the urgency to attend an important meetings for 45 minutes.
I called them the day before and agreed on using their meeting room the day after.
Unfortunately when I got there, they rejected me and treat me as I was crazy, saying I never called them.
Also, the area doesn’t offer any stable wifi, I begged them and offered them money but they were rude to me and bring me to the exist. I understand their internal policy but I do not accept this treatment. Horrible experience!
