The Royalton Riviera Cancun garners mixed reactions, with the fitness center, pools, and entertainment often receiving compliments, yet some guests find the lively atmosphere and constant music too overwhelming. While the beachfront locale is appreciated for its scenic views, opinions on cleanliness and room conditions vary, with numerous travelers noting the need for improved housekeeping and room modernization. The service quality also ranges from excellent to disappointing, leading to varied perceptions of value for the luxury price point.

The resort is beautiful, clean and views are amazing! The food was so good. We loved the steakhouse and hibachi, but if you want to do the hibachi you need to make a reservation, so go there at 2:30 with drink in hand because the line forms fast! If you go to any of the restaurants you will want to stop and put your name on waiting list and then go to room to shower and get ready for dinner. Because wait for some can be long. The buffet is amazing, they have so much to pick from, you will never leave hungry! The staff is so helpful and go out of their way to help you in anything you may need! One of The best was our waiter at the Royalton pool named Gustavo Casrera, spelling of his last name may not be spelled right, but the resort should have him be in charge of training the waiters because he was amazing! We had two others that didn’t come around very often and when we ordered it took them forever to bring drinks and sometimes they never came back. Gustavo was great and if you go to the pool look for him for the best service!! We also booked a tour with the zip lining, snorkeling and 4 wheelers with Nexus tours which is right there at the hotel.

We stayed at this property last week, traveling with a 12 month old & an almost 5 year old. We got the 1bdrm luxury suite with swim out, which we highly recommend. This allowed us to enjoy our time together while the baby napped & truly relax. Our room was 6118, which was fantastic as it got loads of sun. Also we were near the Diamond pool & were served drinks to our swim up which was the best! It was by far the best room we have ever had, very spacious with areas for everyone to sleep privately!

The concierge service is nice, although they generally only organize dinner reservations and celebrations. Our concierge was lovely (Gustavo), but they don’t do as much as other properties we have been to in the past. The Paradissus Punta Cana was far better in this category as they set up/reserved your beach/pool areas, and prepared special surprises for the kids every day!

The property is beautiful, well manicured + well laid out. Big but not too big. The downfall is the beach. I would not return here for this reason. The seaweed, rockiness was not enjoyable. We made a few sand castles but never got to enjoy swimming in the Ocean. If you’re a beach person, this is not the resort for you. The kids pool area is fantastic, entertained the kids for hours!

The food was mediocre. The only restaurant that was fabulous was the steakhouse (get the salmon!). The buffet was better than the other restaurants, sadly. The biggest issue was getting the kids fed. We would make reso’s at 6pm (opening), rarely get an appetizer before 7pm, mains around 7:45pm. Not workable with infants. We complained every time, got loads of apologies but the same thing happened every night. Room service was absolutely awful for dinner options, so feeding your infant beforehand wasn’t possible. One night I was frustrated I went to the buffet at 6pm, loaded up my babys snack tray on his stroller this way he was taken care of. He lived on croissants, cucumbers and cheese because the kids food was awful. There wasn’t a single berry all week, just melons & papaya & bananas. For lunch the Nibbles had good enchiladas & chicken strips which saved the week, but heavy on gluten/dairy! The only healthy option was the salad bar at the buffet.

I had a massage at the Spa, deep tissue with Abdiel. It was spectacular! Book him! Incredible experience.
The hydrotherapy wasn’t anything fantastic, but massage was well worth it!

The service from the staff was great, very friendly & accommodating.

Overall a nice resort but wouldn’t return due to the beach mainly.

Our first time at the Royalton and as a family of 5 we enjoyed our stay. Pools, restaurants, bars and facilities in general are very nice. But if you have more than 4, be sure to draw straws to find out who will get the pull out couch for sleeping. We were surprised that even though all 5 of us paid the same price, that only 4 would be given the luxury of an actual bed. All the rooms are either 2 queens or 1 king, plus a "sofa bed" - which is a 3 inch folding mattress that you want to be sure no adult has to sleep on. Also note that their "Junior Luxury Suite" is a very small room facing the back of the resort, a "mangrove" view they call it, but in building 8 where we started out, we were looking at another building and listening to construction at the next resort. Not what you see in any of the pictures! The photos of the rooms are taken with a camera lense that makes it look quite deep, when in fact there is just enough space for the beds and couch.

I had asked for our room to be changed and they did offer an upgrade to a Junior Luxury Suite Ocean View (essentially these are the pool view rooms). Their reception staff seem to have trouble communicating clearly as I had a conversation with 3 different people about the upgrade, and paid the extra charges yet when it came time to move, even though they had reprogrammed our keys, when we arrived at the new room with suitcases at 7:30 pm, we opened the door to find it had not been cleaned from the previous people. We were told to go for dinner and that by 9:30 it would be ready. We went back at 10:15, and the room had not been touched! We ended up going back to our original room for that night despite having paid to upgrade. Very frustrating to say the least.

In the end, they took responsibility for the confusion and offered us a full ocean view room for the cost of the original upgrade. We ended up moving the next day and enjoying 5 nights there.

All in all, our experience was quite good, the food is excellent, most of the staff very accommodating, and the grounds are well maintained.

We would go back but would consider 2 bookings, one for a room for 2 and another adjacent room for the 3. Looking at options for this added about $500 for the week.

The room service was really bad, long delays, cold food on arrival, and staff seemed apathetic.

We were a part of the wedding party, and the resort did not honor the rates for an additional room, despite there being vacancy.

Long delays for water and coffee in restaurants.

Unclean beach.

Corridors of the hotel are dim and glum.

The wrist bands come off easily and the resort demands charges to fix them, when the bands themselves aren’t good enough.

Bands don’t always open the rooms. Elderly guests had to walk all the way to the lobby numerous times. Atrocious to not have a portable activation machine.

Please also ensure that you use fewer plastic bottles. It is crazy the amount of trash you generate. You could easily provide filters or have taps for guests to refill drinking water.

This is hands down the nicest resort I’ve ever been to. I’ve travelled to all the major destinations, including the royalton in Varadero, and this place takes the cake. Travelled with a large group for a wedding late Jan - feb for a week. I have zero complaints. The staff is amazing, friendly, helpful and they always give great service with a smile. Such a nice atmosphere.
Accommodations are top notch, rooms are beautiful and clean and the entire grounds themselves are well kept and beautiful. We even had to change our room because we needed two queens instead of a king (mix up because of a change in our reservation, not hotels fault) and it was no problem at all, we even ended up with a tub on the balcony! Good hair dryer in the room too, only thing is there is no feather pillows (might sound trivial, but if you need a feather to sleep, i’d bring one) otherwise the bed is super comfy. There’s a big tub and a huge walk-in shower with two rain shower heads!
The resort layout is easy to figure out, it’s a big resort but it doesn’t feel that big. Our room was at the very end of the resort in building 9, it was very quiet but a bit of a walk to the main areas. If you want something more central I’d suggest building 6 or 7.
The beach is great, not much sea weed at all while I was there, ocean was very nice for swimming. The pools and swim up bars are awesome too and there’s always a spot available in sun or shade at any time of the day at any of the pools or the beach. No need to worry about getting up at 6am to get a good spot lol I could wander anywhere at any time and find a spot no problem.
Drinks are soooo good, no cheap booze and they can mix up basically anything you want perfectly. The martini bar was usually the meeting spot and had excellent cocktails. The food is also excellent, I had the best steak I think I’ve ever eaten at the steak house. The buffet itself is even well above average. There is a food truck set up in the afternoon by the main pool that is delicious. The a la carte restaurants don’t need a reservation, which is a plus and some are also open for lunch! We waited no longer then 20 mins for a table, which is nothing, just grab a drink and relax and before you know it it’s time to eat!
The shows at night were better then other places I’ve been and there’s a band that plays classic rock (!) every night afterwards who were awesome! On sun there was a different band who were just plain awesome as well.
The day trip we had on a catamaran to isla morales was so much fun and very reasonably priced. We booked through sunwing. If you are travelling with a large group I highly recommend booking one. And the Super Bowl party just topped it all off! So much fun, and the traditional “tailgate” buffet outside was great. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this place...if your even thinking about staying here DO IT! I’ll be back...

This resort is beautiful. We were in building 7 with a terrace jaccuzi. We really liked this resort but there were a few things we had issues with:
Rooms were clean but a few things needed to be replaced: mirror had black stains, hair dryer didn’t work, main phone NEVER worked (not just our room, but our friends too). We asked for slippers and robes, but never received them.

On check in, there’s a row of employees who wait to sweet talk you into signing up to their presentation on a time share type of arrangement which they claim isn’t. They wouldn’t leave us alone even though my 10 month old was crying. They called us 3 times the next morning from 8 am to 9 am to get us to come to the presentation. I was really annoyed by that as my kids were very tired from traveling the day before.

The pools are great! Really nice and I great service. The birds were very annoying near the kids pool. They have an outdoor buffet and the birds just love it. It doesn’t help that people feed them too.

The restaurants are good, but the “no reservation” became an issue as most nights there would be an hour wait for a table. Not all restaurants are open every night. We were told there would be an hour wait at Agrave and when I pushed a little, they sat us within 25 min and we were shocked to see that the restaurant was half empty! Taj is very overrated- the apps were over fried and extremely oily.
The staff overall are very friendly. Roger was amazing! He made my husbands birthday celebrations unforgettable!

The beach was the worst part about this resort. Seaweed everywhere! The water had hard shells that would hit you and it actually hurt. If you were going to Cancun for the beach, I wouldn’t recommend this location.

24 hour Room service was great! Food was really food and fresh, minus the hummus... that was really gross

The resort credits are a complete waste! The extra services are so jacked up in price! Massages were so expensive! I was hoping to get my husband and I a massage on the beach but it would have cost me over $300! We just threw out the credits..

Some of our friends wanted to go to coco bongo in Cancun but the sunwing/nexus team kept trying to get them to go to the playa del Carmen location even though it was further. We found out later they offer a package to coco bongo Cancun on Wednesday nights only. You can still go on other nights but have to arrange for transportation.

Everything else about this resort was good; close to the airport, clean, service was mostly good, pools were amazing, entertainment was good, close to Cancun, coffee shop was amazing and, the white party on Friday night was so much fun. I would still rate this hotel 4 stars compared to other resorts I’ve stayed at.

Spent 5 days at the resort with extended family and we all had a very nice time. We had the diamond service and that was definitely helpful and nice to have a personal butler to contact for reservations, resort questions, etc. We were a little disappointed in that the three rooms for our family were supposed to be near each other, but were actually spread out in different resort sections and floors. We didn't have a problem finding places to sit and relax by the pool, but it was more difficult on the beach. The beach area was lovely and no problems with excess seaweed when we were there. Had an issue with a lot of mosquitos for our last night there which was more humid, but no problems the other days and evenings. The food was very good overall and water was purified, so no worries drinking water or eating fresh fruit and vegetables in the restaurants, bars, etc. Great selection of food for all ages and tastes in the main buffet restaurant. We dined at four of the other restaurants as well which were all very nice. We were especially happy with the steakhouse for service and food quality but other places were good too. Hotel appeared clean and staff was very, very nice. One of the rooms for our group did have a musty/rotten egg something smell at times but it was not overwhelming. Resort had a good amount of space and things to do overall for people of all ages. We did have an enjoyable visit and came back home relaxed and refreshed.

Our first ever visit to Mexico and we didn’t want to come home. The hotel whilst large has space for everyone. We arrived, checked in and were escorted to our room in the Diamond Club by our butler Mario, room was perfect with large upper terrace with hot tub, very spacious room with a lovely comfortable bed and fully stocked mini bar.

We ate at all the restaurants, with reservations secured by Cesar and Roberto, thank you both for your assistance during our stay, we are sorry we did not see you on our last day to properly say goodbye. Reading other reviews it seems that it is worth paying extra for the Diamond Club to ensure you eat at the time you want via the butler reservations.

Diamond Club pool perfect, and special thanks to two people in particular, Carlos and Julio. Carlos made sure we had towels and sun beds every day (muchas gracias amigo por tu atencion) and Julio with the best drinks pool service (dos gin tonics y un aperol spritz por favor), this was when he hadn’t already refreshed our glasses.

Beach was very clean with little seaweed, and the beach bar food was excellent, complemented by the grill to go and poolside food truck.

Breakfast had an excellent choice every morning, plenty of options for hot and cold with attentive waiters.

Entertainment in the evening was fine with some good bands and the White party was excellent. Maybe more space required in the Martini Mix bar when popular entertainment is on, would be my only observation.

Food in all the restaurants was perfect, with our favourites being the Caribbean Grill and Hunter Steakhouse, although Agave came very close for our daughter.

Overall a perfect holiday in a great location with excellent staff, we are already looking forward to visiting again next year, one of the best all inclusive locations we have holidayed at.

We were there for a week in February 2020. Two adults and two 6 year olds. We all had a fantastic time. The room was clean and we had a great ocean view after having requested it via the online booking tool. We had reservations in restaurants for a few of the evenings and at in the buffet restaurant on the others. All were fantastic.

I must give a shout out to Jesus Esteban and his partner Rider Dominguez and Olblain (not sure of spelling) for the impeccable service and friendliness in the buffet restaurant. Jesus remembered us from a couple years ago and each time we came into the buffet restaurant, he knew immediately what we and our kids wanted to drink and he would take care of it straight away. The service they provided was top notch and we would look for Jesus each time we went to the buffet.

The kids pool area was great as last time and our kids absolutely loved the Kids Club. Knowing the kids were in good hands in the Kids Club and that they were having a great time was peace of mind for us.

The beach was great. Yes, there was seaweed on the beach, but it in no way impacted the use of the beach. The resort did try to manage it by cleaning it a couple teams each morning but it just keeps coming back - no big deal. With all there is to do and access at this resort, seaweed on the beach is not a big deal.

We booked a day trip to Xcaret through the on site trip booking office. It was worthwhile doing through them as it turned out to be a bit cheaper than had we tried to organize our own transportation and pay entry fees at the park on arrival.

The cafe and ice cream bar was a hit with all of us.

Overall, it as a great a fantastic trip.

I have to concede that the resort is all things it should be, it’s clean, has many facilities and is a nice place to be. My disappointment is in that despite contacting the hotel prior to my arrival and having a long discussion at check in they seem to have ignored me in regards to room allocation. I am a disabled person, not wheelchair bound, but does have walking difficulties. I asked time and time again for a room that was close to the amenities of the hotel, restaurants, entertainment etc. The room allocated to me is in the Hideaway part of the hotel which is handy for the Hideaway pool and beach but NOT for the many restaurants, the buffet dining room and much of the entertainment. It’s out on a limb at the extremity of the complex and involves a huge amount of walking which I was desperate to avoid. Their solution was to charge me an extra $900 to upgrade to Diamond Class very nice but it doesn’t solve the location problem.

To sum up I have to say that this is a top class resort but not really disabled friendly. There are huge amounts of walking required to access the many Wonderful facilities in the resort and they are woefully short on handrails to assist on the many steps and stairs, to use the ramps just involves more walking, just stick a few handrails in to make life easier and safer.
If you are physically fit and healthy this is the perfect resort. We just chose the wrong place.
