...Don't bother with the all inclusive meal plan, like at Matachica, it is not worth the extra cost as it does not include drinks. My only negative comment is that for us Europeans, the filter coffee was undrinkable and they charge (even on the meal plan) for other coffees, USD5 for an expresso is really not acceptable...

The tour to Caracol was the best "uncle" Rudy took great care of us, was very informative, our picnic lunch even came with a table cloth... We named him "uncle" because he watched over us to make sure we were safe at all times... Big shoutouts to Freddy, Nigel, and Shawn who made our stay extra special... We felt at ease, and at home, here, and they're the reason why... From being greeted at check-in by Kobi and given a tour of the grounds with a complimentary cocktail was just the start... All the staff; grounds men, Gardner, tour guides, room service, and of course the servers (Freddy is a cool guy) we're exceptional and friendly... Coffee in your room every morning while listening to the falls was a lovely way to awake each day... The resort dog, Coco, accompanied us on the nature trail hike saving us from a hidden snake!... From Izzy picking us up at the airport as well as being our tour guide through Xunantunich Mayan ruins he was knowledgeable and answered all our questions... Freddy always welcoming us in for breakfast, lunch and dinner... Azeul made the best drinks for my wife and I and Shawn always helped us choose our dinner, my wife always ask the waiter their favorites... ...The beautiful mountains and waterfalls were only matched in amazingness by the staff. Each staff member at Gaia was kind and went above and beyond for our stay to be great... Freddy particularly deserves lauding, and by the end, he felt like a friend, so much so that we looked for him to make sure we could share anecdotes from our day with him!... After you navigate the very 'bumpy' and uneven road surfaces to get to Gaia you are welcomed with smiles, eucalyptus scented cold wash cloths and a beverage (with or without alcohol)... There was not one bad meal or drink that we tried, and we were there for 5 days/4nights...eating only 2 meals off the premises... Freddy, Lucy, Azel, Sean, Kobe, Coco and all the other staff will make you feel right at home...

...The hotel arranged for a private transfer to pick us up in Dangriga after our sailing trip, and our drive to the lodge flew by as the driver was giving us amazing insight into the surrounding area. The staff at Gaia are top notch... The staff will make you feel welcome and accommodated at every step, truly some of the best customer service we have received in our travels... It is a bit of a hike (up/down hill) but anytime we didn’t feel like making the journey on foot there was no problem getting someone to drive us up to the villa... The views from the restaurant are breathtaking, but we also had some of our meals brought to our villa and to the waterfall beach area (that all guests can go to) 5 stars for food and beverage easily... We wanted to take it easy so we didn’t book any of the tours, but we did get couples massages, a tour of the garden on the property where they grow a lot of the ingredients for the food, and took the bikes to a nearby waterfall... Shout out to Shawn and Freddy especially, but all around an amazing staff and a fantastic overall experience...

We were picked up at the airport, and driven around to all the amazing excursions by Greg... We got to spend every day with Greg and we were so grateful to have him as our guide while at Gaia... When we first got to Gaia, 2 smiling faces greeted us with drinks, Lucy and Freddy... They are a delight to talk to and their meticulous service make you feel so well taken care for... ...The waterfall hike is wonderful, and the falls are easily accessible by trail and by tram. The resort dog, Coco, is friendly, playful and will take you on either local hike!... While we did not get to go on the main cultural outing, Nigel, Colby, Izzy and Greg were helpful in arranging an alternative tour accompanied by some chocolate making!... The service was fantastic — Lucy in particular was wonderful... We LOVED it and would highly recommend to any travelers for a few days (3 nights felt right) who are down for a little adventure and very relaxed feel (no TVs in rooms, very laid back staff)...

Having stayed for many nights, we have enjoyed the reaction every one has when they first step on the mahogany patio behind the reception and see the view: Wow!... The site is very well maintained, with dozens of bougainvilleas, hibiscuses, various species of palm trees, all perches for the beautiful birds... Our hut was spacious, simple and functional...

...Unbelievable location, fantastic food, great staff!!! The location is breathtaking, make sure you make full use of the river pool... The tour to Caracol was the best "uncle" Rudy took great care of us, was very informative, our picnic lunch even came with a table cloth... We suggest sun downers on the sofas, going to big rock (a 20 minutes hike + stairs) and spending the day exploring all the pools... The resort dog even accompanied us and came for a swim... Also stargazing from the fire pit area... I suggest they include coffees and soft drinks in the package...

...It has a beautiful central space with a bar, couches, and restaurant. It all overlooks the river and cliffs and is stunning... The waterfall is about a 5 minute hike down from the main area down the hill... The hike is totally doable but a lot of steps, so they have a tram in case you need help or want a break... The waterfall area has beach chairs, hammocks, and a sandy swimming area at the base of the falls... Totally safe and placid swimming... Rooms: the rooms were lovely and simple... They have a comfortable large bed with mosquito netting and a couch and arm chair... The bathrooms are beautiful tiled and have wonderful smelling shampoo... They are not air conditioned but it gets pretty cool at night and you won't need it...

...Gaia Riverlodge is one of a kind. The food is wonderful and the main house with restaurant and check in desk is a perfect place to come and relax as well... He took good care of us in the cave... We went canoeing with a local, walked through a market, went to the ruins and had lunch in one of the towns local restaurants... Make sure to buy some of Greg's coffee from his family's farm if you have a chance... Also, I wish they had more places to dry my swim suits and clothing to dry...

...Gaia Riverlodge will take your breath away as soon as you walk on the property. The setting is stunning, and everything is designed with such thought and care—from the landscaping to the dining room to the individual huts... You'll dine above the treetops and hear a waterfall during every meal... And that on-property waterfall is truly something wonderful!... The lodge has built a little island at the base of it with comfy lounge chairs, hammocks, and shade options... They will even equip you with a handheld radio so you can order food and drinks to your chair... And they set it all up with linens and real silverware... Truly idyllic, and some of our favorite time was spent enjoying this amenity... Plus, there's another beautiful waterfall a quick bike ride away from the property... That 2-hour drive is a bit rough only because it's not on a real road, but little stopovers during the drive, and a thoughtful picnic lunch, make it a great day... They made our trip special, and we learned so much... Big shoutouts to Freddy, Nigel, and Shawn who made our stay extra special... We felt at ease, and at home, here, and they're the reason why... From the moment we were picked up at the airport to the time they dropped us off to go stay at their sister resort, Matachica, we were beyond thrilled... Highly, highly recommend staying at Gaia!...

...From the moment we arrived, it was a first class experience, from check in, to our beautiful river view room (River). The restaurant / bar was top notch !... The special lobster / steak Valentines Dinner, accompanied by a live violinist was one of my best experiences worldwide !... ...After you navigate the very 'bumpy' and uneven road surfaces to get to Gaia you are welcomed with smiles, eucalyptus scented cold wash cloths and a beverage (with or without alcohol). From there every moment at Gaia will be relaxing with every need taken care of and the most beautiful view on the mainland that we experienced!... And with close proximity to ATM, Xunantunich, Barton Creek, San Ignacio, and Guatemala you can experience whatever excursion may suit you... There was not one bad meal or drink that we tried, and we were there for 5 days/4nights...eating only 2 meals off the premises... Freddy, Lucy, Azel, Sean, Kobe, Coco and all the other staff will make you feel right at home...

...The hotel arranged for a private transfer to pick us up in Dangriga after our sailing trip, and our drive to the lodge flew by as the driver was giving us amazing insight into the surrounding area... We stayed in the Riverside Villa and it was *insane*... Hammocks, a huuuge deck, hot tub, kitchen, and best of all our own private waterfall that was perfect for swimming... The villa itself was gorgeous, we felt like we were in our own little world... We would wake up and read by the waterfall, and at night have a hot tub under the stars... I couldn’t find a lot of pictures online other than what the lodge provided, so I wasn’t even really sure what to expect, but again we were blown away when we arrived... Shout out to Shawn and Freddy especially, but all around an amazing staff and a fantastic overall experience...

Hotel's Favourite
First of all, I loved, Loved, LOVED everything about Gaia, the staff, the grounds, the views EVERYTHING!! When I began booking the trip it was meant to be a solo trip but my aunt decided to join me. We were both looking for a place to disconnect, get away from it all, and that is exactly what Gaia delivered.

Driving to Gaia I was questioning my decision because you turn off a main road for a dirt road with nothing in sight, then appears a perfectly manicured lawn and my breathing returned to normal, Lol… I choose right!! Beautiful were our first thoughts and it just kept getting better!!!
From the moment we arrived we were greeted with cool beverages and towels with eucalyptus - so needed after our journey to get there, lol (that’s a story in and of itself ). Check in was easy and our room was gorgeous, tucked away with views of the forest and beautiful variety of birdsong which I love :))

The food was amazing from breakfast to dinner, everything is made and sourced locally. Just being able to sit in such beauty while dining is a treat by itself, the views!

However, with all the wonderfulness in the aforementioned is nothing in comparison to the absolutely incredible staff they have!! I learned so much about their culture, the very diverse culture of the Belizean people. I loved the conversations I had no matter how brief or long, everyone from our tour guides, servers, bartender, housekeeping, groundskeepers, front desk and management staff - all stellar!

Thank you to our servers Daren, Freddy, Lucy, Shawn and to Azel mixing it up at the bar!!

Major, major thank you to Nigel (GM) and Loreni for ensuring that we made it to Guatemala safely, my aunt and I had no plan as for transfer from Belize into Guatemala, Lol. We thought we’d wing it, OMG, thank the heavens Nigel followed up on that as we we’re checking out, he assured us he find us transport and he did, called our Gaia driver while en-route with confirmed transfer :)) thank you sooo much, I will be back and I highly recommend Gaia next time you need a get away!!

Our family stayed at Gaia over the Christmas holiday and couldn't have had a better experience. The word exceptional doesn't do justice to describe the staff here. From a warm welcome on a cool and rainy day (Hi Nigel) to the thoughtful cleaning staff who left amazing towel art in our rooms (Hi Clara) to amazing guides for complimentary and paid tours (Hi Rudy, Isael, Sam, and Calbert) to the waitstaff who anticipated what you wanted to drink (Hi Freddy and Lucy) - and not the mention the staff who arrived extra early one morning to help us safely drive our car past the treacherous turn in the wet red clay after days of rain so we could make our tour to the ATM Cave.

This is the place to stay if you want to get away from it all and be near (ish) to sights most tourists don't see. The road/drive into Gaia is enough to keep some away, but those who brave it reap the rewards. This place has its own private waterfall (and 'beach'), is closer than most places to the hidden gem of Caracol (where we saw a jaguar on the road on the way there) and the Rio Frio Cave and Big Rock - another great waterfall. Let Gaia be the place where you get away from it all and get back to nature in luxury.

If you enjoy ‘climbing’ over rocks to reach one waterfall after another - this is the place to stay. I wish we would have had one more warm, sunny day so we could have just kept going up and up and up from one fall to the next (just be careful as they are slippery). Take advantage of all the things they offer as each one is worth it.

Thank you Team Gaia for all you did to make a stay with you amazing and memorable!

Thank you very much for your review, and our collective apologies for the not so perfect weather. All of us are happy, though, that you enjoyed your stay nevertheless, and maybe we can convince you to come back once more for all this rock climbing in bright sunshine... Seeing that jaguar must have been an awesome experience. I personally have not been able to go above ocelot yet, and I am envious. Your message has been shared at our staff meeting and everybody is sending lots of smiles back. We hope that remembering your adventures at Gaia and the peace and quiet here will help you to get through some of the more challenging days. Burga Pattinson for the Gaia Family

This is one of the most unique sites anywhere. Getting there is tough, but once there it's Utopia. Staff is amazing, always referring to you by name. Site is spectacular with the 5 sisters waterfall, beautiful views. Attention to detail by the staff without being pretentious is truly appreciated. Great restaurant, inspired by their amazing organic garden. Rooms are appointed beautifully, very comfortable, and the design elements throughout the property are authentic and from artists from the area.
A must visit, and should be on everyone's bucket list. A beautiful and unique experience.

This place is stunningly beautiful! Love the easy access to the waterfall and love the attention to detail by the staff. I’ve travelled to many places and loved them but the Gaia staff truly gives you the care and attention.

When we first arrived to Belize airport, we were met by Darrel and he is so knowledgeable in all things Belize, Gaia, and the culture. While the drive to Gaia was a little long, we stopped at a local convenience store where he introduced to us, plantain chips with ketchup. That was an interesting combo but surprisingly good.

To mention the roads to Gaia, all were paved except for maybe the last 10 minutes. During COVID, I believe the roads were paved and so there are no pot holes and crazy gravel other than the last few minutes of the drive.

Once we arrived to Gaia, we were met by Kobi and we complimentary fruit juice mixed with rum (super yummy!). Normally, when met by staff at other hotels, you’re rushed to check in and get to your room. At Gaia, we were given time to eat lunch and see the overlook of the Five Sisters waterfall before checking in. Once we were checked in, we were led to our rooms and the landscape is well kept and gorgeous. Luckily where we stayed, wifi reached our room. Originally, I did not think we had wifi in our rooms but maybe they all reach the rooms now.

Lunch and dinner is delicious but a little pricey so be prepared for the cost. I would say all the food is freshly made and fruits and veggies are from their garden which is organically grown. We met their gardener, Sam, and wow did he blow my mind with all the gardening tricks and new plants I can grow. I would definitely recommend trying at least one cocktails at Gaia as they are uniquely made for Gaia so you most likely won’t find it anywhere else.

The rooms were packed with towels for shower, towels for the waterfall, extra soft blankets, big spray, umbrella, and of course, all the bathroom necessities. I believe all the soap, shampoo, and conditioner were locally made and smell like menthol so if you don’t like that smell, bring your own!

Overall, our experience at Gaia was great, we definitely felt safe and comfortable with such friendly staff. Oh as for excursions, we did the Mayan cultural tour and ATM cave, which I recommend the latter. If you want a jungle feel, Gaia is your place but be aware of the $ cost to meals and yours since there’s no other restaurant in the area, unless you have a car.

Shout out to Loreni, Nigel, Calvert, Lucy, Darrel, Azel, Chris (great magician), and the rest of the staff for taking care of us.

We had an AMAZING two night stay at Gaia. Definitely a much appreciated change of pace from the crowds and beach scene. The location, breathtaking views of waterfalls/ mountains, and staff make Gaia an unforgettable stay. The food was the best food we ate while in Belize (shoutout to Chef Troy). Almost all the food comes from their onsite organic garden, which Carlos was nice enough to give us a tour of (he even packed us two full bags of produce when we left!). Make sure you take bikes to Big Rock Falls which is about a mile away from Gaia. We were the only ones there! We did the Caracol tour with Isael, which was incredible. There were only 15 people total in the park. The handpacked lunch was also delicious. (We had originally intended to do Tikal but couldn’t bc of the pandemic, but are so glad we ended up at Caracol, a much closer drive and truly breathtaking. Also probably less visited bc you have to take a 4WD vehicle through the jungle.) Perhaps one of the biggest highlights was Freddy, who took care of us during every meal. Such a nice guy who really added to our overall experience. Lucy the bartender also made us some amazing drinks and told us about a unique Albariño wine made by a Belizean in California which we tried and loved. The only possible criticism you could say about this place is there is no AC in the rooms, but you are mostly out of the rooms during the day and it really cools down at night. They also provide strong fans. A must go!

Absolutely fantastic!!!!!
Unbelievable location, fantastic food, great staff!!!
The location is breathtaking, make sure you make full use of the river pool.
Everything we ate (and drank) was delicious, the freshness of the products was evident (straight from the garden). The food takes a while to arrive but that is because it is cooked to order and from scratch.
The tour to Caracol was the best "uncle" Rudy took great care of us, was very informative, our picnic lunch even came with a table cloth. We named him "uncle" because he watched over us to make sure we were safe at all times.
Freddy at the restaurant was more like our Mum, always there to serve us our favourites and take care of our every need.
We suggest sun downers on the sofas, going to big rock (a 20 minutes hike + stairs) and spending the day exploring all the pools. The resort dog even accompanied us and came for a swim. Also stargazing from the fire pit area.
Don't bother with the all inclusive meal plan, like at Matachica, it is not worth the extra cost as it does not include drinks. My only negative comment is that for us Europeans, the filter coffee was undrinkable and they charge (even on the meal plan) for other coffees, USD5 for an expresso is really not acceptable. I suggest they include coffees and soft drinks in the package.
We really miss Gaia and hope to be back some day.

We visited Gaia for 5 nights in November. Their remote location is one of the things that makes Gaia so special. We rented a car to have the freedom to explore the area, and although the drive in to Gaia is fairly tame, the surrounding roads to Caracol, 1000ft Falls, Barton Creek Caves are anything but! We are an adventurous couple in our 50's and have taken some decently challenging off grid adventure trips, but driving in the western mountains of Belize was gripping. Coming back to the lux lodging at Gaia was safe haven. Our waterfall suite was gorgeous. The housekeeping team went above & beyond on my birthday - and they even cleaned clay out of my shoes daily without me ever asking. Freddy, Lucely, Rudy and were excellent servers and Carlos, a new bartender that my enjoyed, were all great over our stay. Special mention goes out to Christopher who is the night watchman but also a fantastic magician! If he offers a show while you are there, definitely check it out! Gaia's menu is a bit limited but everything on it is superb. Between the two of us there for 5 nights, we literally tried everything... and they will bring a picnic lunch down to the falls for you. My only regret is that I didn't spend more time relaxing at their amazing falls location, instead of spending the majority of our time exploring all the other waterfalls & ruins in the area!

Husband and I stayed in late April for four days at the Riverside Villa below the falls. It was very quiet and private, comfortable bed and atmosphere. Plenty of birding opportunities and complimentary birding is available on site. The Villa is beautifully crafted and open. Full size kitchen and plenty of bathrooms. Easily sleeps 5 people between the main house and the separate sleeping area.

Toucans, warblers, vireos, Golden Headed Tanagers, Red-legged Honeycreepers….

Breakfast comes with the rate, all meals were very good and one has the option to have it delivered to the villa.

The only downsides we experienced were no WiFi at the Villa (that may be in the works), and the tremendous hike up and down many steps to get back to the lodge for meals or to check on emails/house sitters. Helpful hint: walking up the driveway is easier than all the steps.

The lodge is very happy to transport you up and down the hillside in a vehicle if your prefer whenever you desire.

Super accommodating staff, they really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. We really enjoyed our stay!

From the moment we arrived at Gaia we were treated with wonderful service and great care. Immediately upon check in, a welcome drink was offered to us and we were shown to a relaxing deck to enjoy a glorious view of the mountainside & waterfalls. Vacation Mode On.

The remote lodge has a wonderful getaway from it all and just enjoy nature vibe. Our cabana was a mountain view room called Ridge and felt very private & secluded while still being one of the closest rooms to main bar & restaurant. The Mosquito Net over the bed was very romantic & practical and the bed & linens felt luxurious & comfy. The panorama windows in the room offered incredible views of the forest. I was a little worried about there not being any air-conditioning in the room but the overhead fan as well as the oscillating floor fan provided in the room kept the temperature moderately cool most of the time. It was quite hot & humid outside while we were there but there is no better excuse to jump in the waterfall than that. The hotel was also very thoughtful to provide the room with a complimentary can of deep woods bug spray which we were happy to use. Don't think there won't be bugs in the forest because there will be but it's an adventure. We saw the biggest grasshoppers we've ever seen while at the lodge like WOW they were big.

I can't say enough good things about the waitstaff or the food either. Big shoutout to Freddie who took care to make sure we had everything thing we needed while dining at Gaia. He even remembered our preferred teas and brought them to us each morning at the start of breakfast. Thanks for the above and beyond attention to detail. The food was really yummy and we liked all the dishes we tried. Definitely save room for the brownie dessert made with locally sourced mayan dark chocolate. It is rich and delectable. I also highly recommend the fresh homemade bread they bake each day. The wheat toast at breakfast was heavenly and so were the multigrain rolls at dinnertime.

Be sure to take advantage of the onsite hiking trails for paths with local vegetation, bird & butterfly sightings. We could have easily stayed here more days to explore more of the area. We chose to go on the Macal River & Xunantunich Tour. It was hard to decide which tour to do because they had so many attractive options but we had fun and Calbert our local guide was very knowledgeable and fun to be around. He told us about the area on our trip into San Ignacio, showed us around the local farmer's market, & guided us through the archeological site of Xunantunich. We stopped for lunch at Benny's kitchen & he had a great recommendation for the local dish of Pibil.

Gaia River Lodge was overall an Incredible Experience! I'm so glad we decided to add this on to our "beach trip" because it really made our vacation so much extra special! Thanks for the Magical Memories Gaia!

The design of Gaia Riverlodge and how it compliments so perfectly the stunning natural beauty of its location is what makes it stand out. My sister and I stayed in a waterfall view cabana that felt like a custom luxurious tree house. Nothing but miles of green trees and the spectacular 5 sister waterfall view and hum of water for 4 glorious nights. I could easily come with my favorites books and music and chill here for as long as I can- I felt completely safe and at home nestled among the trees and birds and beautiful people of this magical country. The staff and all of the tour guides that they associate with was the other exceptional aspect of this unique and life affirming property. I would like to mention the GM Nigel for being the steady and gracious captain of this incredibly well run resort as well as: front desk folks Chris and Kobe, server and bartender Freddy (don't miss the Balaam Mojito!), spa masseuse and facialist Lilly (uses all natural products including a fresh papaya/brown sugar scrub that's amazing). Tour guides Isa (don't miss nocturnal walk through forest and bird watching with Calpert), driver Gregory who started the great vibes when he picked us up at the airport. It is absolutely worth spending the $150 to have Gaia pick you up in their cool Land Cruisers or Vans. There is a typo in the current description of the site I found Gaia on as it doesn't take 3 hours from the airport to get to Gaia- thanks to a new road it's about 2 hours (only 10 minutes or so on unpaved dirt road). I think the hotel is doing everything they possibly can do to make each guest's stay be noteworthy. An example- I left my Air Pods in the room and they were able to seamlessly get them to me at my next stop in Belize (Ambergris Caye) within 48 hours!

I don't know the answers to most of your questions, but I can tell you that I think all of the cabanas are adequately spaced away from the restaurant and away from one another. Further, at least when we were there, the restaurant was never crowded and was always quiet in keeping with the overall tranquil vibes of the whole property. We were in a basic cabana type called Mangrove, and it was one of the farthest from the restaurant. Hope this helps!

If you are doing a full dinner meal with drinks, I would plan to spend a minimum of $150 for a couple. Breakfast could be anywhere from $25 to $50 per couple depending on how big a breakfast you like. Same for lunches. Cocktails ran about $11 - $15 each. We had package so meals were included but we had to pay for drinks. I think you can get a meal package at check in.
