Hotel Calgary is a family-run business with a strong connection to Canada (the parents both lived in Calgary, Alberta, their first two of three children were born there and all speak English). The family is ever-present on the premises ensuring that everything runs smoothly and customer requests are dealt with; they have their own table in the dining hall and eat there all their lunches and dinners, sometimes just them sometimes with visiting friends.
The room we had was fair size with all modern amenities; it was clean and comfortable.
The meals are a real treat at Hotel Calgary. Every morning breakfast buffet (fruit, pastries, yogurts, cereals, coffee, etc.) is served on the front outdoor patio. Lunch and supper choices are selected by the guest the previous day and include a primo (appetizer), a secondo (main dish) and a side dish. At the end of each meal, you have a choice of fruit or granita (lemon sorbet).
On Thursday evening there was a special dinner ("Abruzzese evening") where a lot of local specialties were served to the guests on the outdoor patio with music and later dancing.
The cuisine at Hotel Calgary is creative and uses fresh local ingredients. The menu is varied, portions are just right, and it's simple but very delicious.
The beach is right across the little road. It is clean, quiet and enjoyable.
There is a bar-café on the premises where you can have, coffee, drinks or cocktails prior to meals and after meals.
The service throughout is just impeccable and the price for the stay is most reasonable.
Hotel Calgary is worth a return visit hands down.
We have since recommended Hotel Calgary to our friends and family.
The room we were shown to firstly, other than really not having enough room for us comfortably, had a major problem and we were asked to wait for the tradesman to come and fix it, within the next 3 days (!?). We immediately requested another room.
The second room was "made ready for us" at the side of the hotel, no view, stuffy but slightly larger. The cleaners were in the next-door room when we arrived. As the room looked rather dirty, we presumed they hadn't done it yet, so we asked them to do it next, before we unpacked. They looked at us blankly and informed us that they had just finished cleaning it! I made them re-do it anyway, which didn't go down too well with them and didn't make a huge difference anyway.
The access to our room was via a lift, then stairs, then over an internal balcony area laden with pidgeon poo. Difficult to access with heavy luggage and also disgusting.
In the room itself, the separating door was a broken concertina, there was a problem with the toilet cistern that flooded the floor and the unfortunate flusher with spraying water, but the straw that broke the camel's back was when the door to the bathroom actually broke off its top hinges and fell on my back as I was bending over my child in the bathtub. No, I'm not joking. My husband had to lift the door off me.
We checked out asap, much to the consternation of the management who refused to acknowledge any problem.
The only less-than-awful points were the good location and the OK food., even though the dining room is quite depressing and, considering the state of hygeine in the rest of the hotel, I don't even want to think about the probable lack of hygeine in the kitchen.
There are much better options in the area, so go to one of them.
Everything is homemade and fresh...Accolades owners Josefina, her husband and her son the chef. You will not find a better place to stay in the area!!!!
What about the kindness and helpfulness of the owners, exquisite people and ready to meet every need revealed.
The location of the hotel is priceless.
We will definitely return next year and I would highly recommend it to everyone, you will not regret it.
The establishment is very very nice, nice as well as the beach with umbrellas.
The aperitif was fully satisfactory but above all we were pleasantly impressed by the large amount of choice of quality Gin for cocktails and more.
The hotel, recently renovated in furnishings is beautiful and bright.
Excellent dinner based on fish.
What about, absolutely recommended for a
period of relaxation.
We will return in August doing half board
