Very old pub with interesting history. Breakfast and dinner rooms very tastefully decorated
Our room no 1 was adequate size for a pub/hotel with quality towels and toilet rolls !
Breakfast and excellent cooked to order hot and tasty alongside toast and fruit if required
Decided on the strength of good breakfast to have an evening meal and our only regret was not having a the cheesecake dessert because of a plateful of soup and a large dinner
Special thanks to Martin and Karen
But to all The team at The crown hotel well done . We enjoyed our visit
The tables in the garden were socially distanced and the menus single use. From the extensive list of starters we ordered garlic bread, bang bang chicken, prawn cocktail, devilled mushrooms and white bait. They were all served with a green side salad and were very good
Again the mains menu was extensive, from which we chose lasagne, roast beef, roast lamb, and steak and ale pie, each of which was served with beautifully cooked fresh vegetables and was very good. The roasts were huge and served with Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes. The children’s burger was a limp disappointment; maybe we should have ordered an adult one!
Washed down by pints of bitter shandy and many different children’s drinks this was a very satisfying Sunday lunch for about £100; very good value.
We were too full, late and tired to go for the dessert menu which looked very tempting; maybe next time?
We in a family room with two double beds and a single. There are four steps up to the bathroom but no handrail. For safety’s sake I think a handrail is needed.
Breakfast on the first couple of days was very good. Hot food, properly cooked and the waitress who was an older lady was very welcoming, attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Don’t know if the chef was the same or not but the lady was not there and there were two very young girls waiting on us. They were more interested in chatting to each other out in the kitchen than checking if we had what we wanted or clearing the tables.
They were sullen, forgetful and our breakfast came out with cold mushrooms. A man at another table said his beans were cold. Our waitress could not remember what we’d asked for and my partner was given tomato that he’d didn’t want. We had to keep asking for coffee. At one point the waitress threw away the coffee on the hot plate and we had to wait while another one filtered through. Neither of them looked around to clear tables or to check if anyone needed anything. On Wed my partners egg was not properly cooked so today we asked them to make sure it was cooked and not raw. It came out totally over cooked, like rubber! It felt like the chef was taking the P!
Dinner was ok but the portions were so large the chips and salad were falling off the plates. It was a bit off putting and we saw so much waste. We started ordering just starters because the mains were just too much.
Some locals using the bar were very foul mouthed and loud, and on occasions there were families eating in the bar. This is unacceptable.
A lot of the staff are very young. Untrained and unmanaged. Lacking customer service skills. It’s a shame because the older staff members work so hard. The youngsters let them down. We checked out a day early because we couldn’t face another bad night sleep or a badly cooked breakfast. This morning I just had toast and cereal because I couldn’t face it.
If I’ve had any issues they have sorted them, if I needed food saving because of finishing late they have saved some for me and even let me stay in the same room every week because that was where I was comfortable.
The breakfast crew are amazing, they are willing to accommodate any taste be it veggie or someone who really really likes ketchup. Karen makes breakfast a lovely part of the day considering I’m not a morning person, it’s like having your mum looking after you.
Again thank you for looking after me so well and if I need to come back I know where I’m staying.
Our room in the main building was small but remember this property is nearly 600 years old. The bathroom was big enough. Everything was clean with nice quality bedding and a comfy firm bed.
This property is incredibly old and full of character. If you want Marriott or Holiday Inn, go there instead. This is good old-fashioned service with a smile and in a lovely setting. Highly recommended.
This old village Inn exceeded expectations. Friendly staff at the bar were welcoming and showed me to a classically furnished ensuite room overlooking the quiet beer garden. Bar was busy and friendly and pub grub good value. This room was great value and included one of the best full English breakfast served by again warm and friendly staff. The village is beautiful and in lovely setting. I came on a business trip but this place would make an idesl short break.
"Parking outside hotel was safe food was excellent but there is a fish and chip shop directly opposite"Read full review
