For a budget hotel in a great central location, the hotel worked out just fine. The room was basic and clean, and included a min-fridge. However, the decor in the hallways (black with neon green doors) looked a bit like a failed DIY project, and the creaking hallways and thin doors meant that you could hear every time someone went...

The location of this hotel is the only really great thing about it. Everything else is average at best. The room itself was pretty dingy - grubby walls and windows (one of the slats was made of plastic and the window in the bathroom didn't close properly. I wouldn't want to stay here in the middle of July!). The bed...

Stayed here for 3 nights over Easter. We knew we were on a budget but also that we didnt want to spend time in a luxurious hotel as. Wanted to see the Melbourne sights. Kingsgate was a great place to get our value for money as well as a clean and well presented hotel. We asked the manager Rob to...

The hotel was to our expectation for economy accommodation on the Grand Prix weekend. The room was clean, the old air conditioner kept us cool and dry. The water was hot and the linen was fresh and clean. I particularly liked the cafe/bar/lounge on level 1. The meals were good value and the staff were friendly.

We knew that we were booking a budget hotel but this was the worst budget hotel we have visited. The room had frosted glass (one cracked) which when open looked out onto a particularly grotty dirty internal courtyard and fire escape. The room was adequate and clean although I could only just squeeze between the bedside and wall and so...

We travelled up as a couple, and were expecting something with a little bit more quality for the price we paid. The walls were very thin and it felt like we had no privacy, not to mention the noise from the air conditioning at night. The bathroom also was quite ordinary. Basiicaly it felt like a backpackers hostel. the positive...

Dear traveller, Thank you for your feedback and I’m sorry that your stay at the ibis Styles Kingsgate didn’t meet your expectations. I sincerely apologise for the noise from the hotel that you experienced in your room during your stay. Unfortunately with the building being constructed in 1926 means we still have some piping and exhaust fan noise issues. We...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
