The Great Southern Hotel Melbourne garners praise for its prime location and the generally comfortable and cozy atmosphere it provides. Travelers are often satisfied with the room cleanliness and the friendly staff, but the hotel's value for money receives mixed reviews, with some guests finding the experience not up to par with the cost. While the amenities are acknowledged for their cleanliness and accessibility, criticism arises over air-conditioning issues, noise levels, and breakfast offerings. Room complaints also center on noise and temperature control, despite some being spacious and well-equipped.

The staff we very friendly and informative. They explained all the information I needed to know in a concise and clear manner.

I booked a stranded queen room and was upgraded to a king size upon arrival. The room was spacious, very clean and comfortable.

The hotel is located on Spencer Street Melbourne across the road from Southern Cross Railway Station. It is a stones throw from the Casino and a short walk to the centre of Melbourne.

I had a pleasant experience and I would recommend this hotel to others based on price, cleanliness, location and how I was dealt with by the staff. They were very professional.

It’s hard to know how to rate this hotel. The location is brilliant and the room I had was clean, quite modern, bed was comfortable and quiet (I did request that). The hotel itself is dated generally and has a tired feel. Staff were helpful enough but it’s not a well oiled machine - often had to wait for eggs at breakfast and the voucher system is a bit of a pain. The bathroom light/fan come on at the same time and the fan was very noisy! As was the heater/air conditioner. I think when you look at the price it’s very good considering its location but it’s probably a 2 star hotel at best anywhere else. The paperwork they make you sign when you check in is scary - all about aggressive behavior, disposal of sharps, thriving your stuff outbid the room if you stay past check out at 10 am without paying… hope that helps you all with a decision :)

This is the 2nd time we’ve stayed here. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance to Southern Cross station, supermarket, Southbank & Crown complex. The room was not flash but it was adequate for our needs. It was clean, the bed was comfortable, there were tea/coffee facilities, small fridge and wardrobe. It was quite a warm evening so we used the air conditioning throughout the night. The A/C is an old unit and was located above the door which was tricky to reach given there was no remote; it did the job though. The communal areas of the hotel probably require attention as they were not very clean and the internal balustrading resembles a prison. The staff were polite & professional and there is onsite parking available for an additional charge. The restaurant next door was very good value and made lovely parmigiana. Overall we were satisfied with our stay and the cheap price we paid for the room $100.

On our 3 month trip through New Zealand and Australia we finally arrived at our final destination in Melbourne, Australia. We booked an excellent family room for 2 adults and 2 children in the 4 star “The Southern Great Hotel”. The large room was excellent with very comfortable king beds. But the breakfast was a absolute disaster. We booked 3 nights for 4 persons at the hotel. We did however not notice that the confirmation only confirmed breakfast for one person (our mistake) which is a very sneaky way to sell breakfast. Little did it matter as the breakfast was a huge disappointment. As a guest one receives a breakfast voucher at the reception. The breakfast is enjoyed in a separate poor furnitured room. As a family we are traveling a lot why we stay in many hotels and if you book a stay for 4 persons with breakfast then you also expect to receive breakfast for 4 persons and not 1 person. Being a 4 star hotel we also expect a certain standard for the breakfast, which was not met and an absolute disaster. We recommend to avoid the poor and expensive breakfast at the hotel and enjoy a better and cheaper breakfast in the cafes or at the markets.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your recent stay with us. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your family room and found the king beds comfortable. However, we sincerely apologize for the confusion regarding the breakfast arrangement and for not meeting your expectations. We understand how important it is for families to enjoy breakfast together, and we regret the misunderstanding about the breakfast voucher. It seems you may have booked a family room that included only one breakfast. We appreciate your feedback and hope to have the opportunity to better serve you in the future. Thank you once again for your insights, and we look forward to hosting you again soon! Kind regards, Mike The Great Southern Hotel Management

We had planned this father son trip for 8 months to attend the Australian GPF1 .for my birthday.
We booked into the hotel as it was a great location close to the track and all amenities.
On arrival after leaving qld at 630am to fly to Brisbane then on to Melbourne.
Arrived at the motel to a room that had a dirty bathroom with long hair all over the bathroom floor and a broken handle on the bathroom door dirty benches.
I filled in a maintenance form spoke to reception and they sent up maintenance and cleaning. I headed out to meet my son and have a beer.
When we returned to the room the bathroom wasn't cleaned and the air-conditioning was leaking all over the bed and floor.
We were offered a new room garinteed that it was clean and fresh.
Well that was not right
the room stank off wet dog as the air-conditioning was leaking worse than the first room.
So we were upgraded to a family room.
Well the shower was all blocked up and the shower screen was broken.
Totally disappointed as to the lack of maintenance to all 3 rooms.
Not happy.

Clean room, convenient and safe. Friendly staff, helpful. The laundry and dryer you could use at all hours and you didn't have to pay too much. Close to Southern Cross Station so easy to access when traveling in and out of Melbourne. Also very accessible due to the trams which are free in the city.

I have stayed at quite a few mid and budget hotels in Melbourne and am always quite forgiving when reviewing, understanding what you pay for and what you expect.

I think the main reason I was so let down by this was because I’ve stayed in the Travelodge, Atlantis and Rydges for the same price and their quality on offer was much higher.

The location is good, but the rooms are so dated, the noise was unbearable, and I had no window for the room. I would say a private room in a hostel might rate a bit higher. I rarely say I wouldn’t stay again but this just wasn’t a great experience.

The staff were lovely and no issues there.

The noise came from other rooms above and beside with creaking of floors and hearing stairs constantly. The hot water in the bathroom would take up to 5-10 min to heat up. The rooms were clean, so it’s not a place that’s inhabitable, nor would I say avoid it. But if others surrounding are same price, I suggest to book those.

My stay at this "hotel" on the 21st of March felt more like a stint in a prison cell. The receptionist seemed utterly disinterested in her job, setting the tone for the dismal experience ahead. Upon entering the room on some level 4 unsafe looking hallway where I had to take steps and carry my heavy luggage (junkies smoking drugs outside the doors), I was overwhelmed by the potent odor of bleach and mold, with ripped carpets and blood stains marring the walls. The TV hung precariously, and the shower struggled to maintain hot water for more than a few minutes. The absence of windows made it feel like a suffocating box. To top it off, the heating/air conditioning system was malfunctioning, leaving the room bitterly cold despite the layers of dust and stains on the vents.Considering the exorbitant price tag of nearly a grand for a two-night stay, this dismal excuse for accommodation falls drastically short of even a $50 valuation. Had I known the reality of this "prison-type" establishment, I would have swiftly looked elsewhere. I strongly advise against wasting your hard-earned money at this establishment. Curiously, I later discovered the same room type listed for less than $150 a night, raising suspicions of some dubious pricing scheme at play. Avoid at all costs.

While the Great Southern Hotel Melbourne has its positives, such as a convenient location, fast check-in, and courteous housekeeping staff, my overall experience was disappointing and unsettling.

The biggest issue was the lack of soundproofing in the rooms. Noise from the hallway and other rooms was constant throughout the night—everything from air conditioning units and cupboard doors slamming to pedestrian traffic outside my room could be heard clearly. On top of that, a lot of street noise filtered in, including what sounded like crackers or even gunshots, making it hard to relax.

To make matters worse, my in-room phone rang three times during the night. When I finally answered on the third call, there was someone on the other end who didn’t respond, which felt very creepy. Adding to the discomfort, the room allowed a lot of light in even with the shades down, further disrupting my sleep.

After dealing with the repeated phone calls, constant noise, and intrusive light, I felt very uneasy and just wanted to leave, but it was the middle of the night. If sleep, quiet, and peace of mind are important to you, I would not recommend this accommodation provider.

Rooms are advertised as air-conditioned, while this is *technically* true, you have no control over it other than turning it on or off. Hotel management decide whether it is set to heat or cool, you cannot change it. We had a room with 3 single beds with guys sleeping in them. Because it was a cool week, management set aircon to heat. Our room was already 26 degrees with no way to cool it. Windows are sealed shut. No way to get fresh air other than to leave the hotel room door open. It just got hotter and hotter and more and more humid. No exhaust fan on the shower either so whenever we showered it instantly made everything 10 times worse.
After lodging a complaint, they gave us a small evap cooler to use to try and cool the room down but it just turned the room into a swamp.

Absolutely horrible nights sleep sweating on top of the bed with no covers. Just insane considering on the other side of the window glass it was a gloriously cool 10 degrees.
I have rarely felt the need to write a review before but if there is one thing that will turn me off returning to a hotel it's a bad nights sleep. It can easily ruin a holiday.

If you're a hot sleeper and the weathers cool, find somewhere else to stay, cause they'll have the heater on.
