Found the Shakespeare Tavern almost by accident while walking around Auckland. Road construction had the place almost hidden. Good thing we did. Turned out to be a great stop for lunch and a few pints after negotiating the city. Service from the bar tender (mid-afternoon wasn't real busy) was super. He answered questions on menu items and the in-house brews,...

It's in a beautiful old building conveniently located in downtown. I'd stay there again, but maybe in a different room. We stayed in room 8, which is on the top floor, three floors above the street. Note there is no lift. The bed was comfortable enough. One of our three windows opened onto a catwalk of the fire escape. The...

I stayed here with my friend for a concert. It's got wonderful location just up a hill from Queen St. It has a great view and a cute botiquey vibe. There is a massive portrait of William Shakespeare which is beautiful. Stained glass windows, the brewery is right behind the bar (i reccommend the pilsner). Only downside is no parking...

The place is just above a pub (no noise in the third floor though) and is centrally located. It is easy to reach from the airport by the sky bus. Our short interaction with the staff (also the bar staff) was nice and efficient. The room (a triple) was good, shower had good hot water pressure and bed was comfortable....

Either I wasn't in the mood or the mussels were not that flash, definitely not bad, just a bit tough. The service was actually good. I may return, but will try something else other than the mussels. The Hopt soda was good but not cheap

The location is excellent for anyone coming on or off a cruise boat in Auckland. The hotel has great character and history and the owner is on premise and very helpful. The beers that are brewed there are excellent and I especially enjoyed the Pilsner. From a value standpoint, this hotel is the BEST VALUE in downtown Auckland. If you...

Booked in for two nights stay. Was given key to very small room on 4th floor with no lift. Paint was peeling off ceiling in bathroom, 6 months at least of dust on light bulbs, terrible smell in room, bed side tables varnish cracked and stained. Didn't stay at all and booked into other accommodation, at similar price. Manager was...

We had arrived and n Auckland at lunchtime on a flight from Singapore so we had been fed at different times with different food - breakfast at 4am NZ time - and so we were not only disorientated but also uncertain as to what we really wanted. We were recommended to visit the Shakespear Tavern and what a good idea...

We just went for a bite to eat on a particularly busy night in the city. The staff were so friendly and helpful and made us feel so welcome. The food was quickly served and hot and tasty. I had pizza, pepperoni had a nice heat to it. My friend had nachos and the serving was huge

This place is m local. Close to work and home. The service from these guys for a pub is supremely friendly and I love every visit. From the Friday nights where my work crew starts out their evening of drinks to seriously good pub food when you realise you should probably eat something. Could not rate this wee pub highly...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
