I had a great stay at southern comfort. It is a beautiful old house with all original features, the highest ceilings! I had a double room no ensuite but with all of the 3 private rooms the bathroom is just outside your door so doesn't matter at all. I would encourage anyone to stay here compared to any soulless hotel/motel...

My friends and I enjoyed staying here. The hosts were very helpful and kind. The kitchen is amazing- huge and has lots of nice crockery etc to use. Lovely outdoor area to eat or read. Great location- easy walk to iSite and the town. The room was very clean and comfortable. Bathrooms in the hallway were also available to use...

Stayed for 2 nights on my way from Queenstown to Stewart island. Highly recommend! Lovely cosy little backpackers which attracts nice backpackers. Dorm rooms are very clean and quiet. Really nice homely facilities. Thanks Will and Sanda for the great stay.

We stayed twice at this homely Backpackers Hostel sited in a large Victorian style house in a quiet peaceful location on a side street. It is not as central as some other places but still within easy walking distance of restaurants, bars and shops. Well run, clean and with good wifi it is a good place to stop off en...

Beautiful big old house. Nice garden. Loved the ensuite bathroom in the women's dorm. Loved the breakfast bar in the kitchen. The host was great and was proud of his his house. Walking distance to McDonald's. A tv room would be my only suggestion.

I stayed here the night before and after hiking the Rakiura Track on Stewart Island. I was in a 5 bed dorm with 4 other girls. The room and house were clean and well maintained. The bed was comfy and the kitchen had everything I needed (however supplies in general were a little sparse ie. cups and bowls). The second...

Repeat visitor, and the place is still nice, but there seemed to be something missing this time. Willy does a nice job to keep the place in good shape, but it's starting to look it's age. Pros: good kitchen, nice outside area, comfy living room. Low: twice there was major thick smoke in the kitchen (from cooking) and no alarm...

This place hits all the key points for a hostel. Plenty of space in the dorm room, with outlets for everyone and nice light through the big window. There are bunks, but these are wooden, not the shaky steel type. The kitchen is very clean and well supplied, with an adjoining dining and lounge area. The lounge area has very...

This was a very charming hostel conveniently located a couple blocks from the iSite. Easy walking distance to grocery stores, restaurants, and the park. The dorm rooms were spacious and there was a comfortable sitting room with music and a big dining table. There was plenty of room in the kitchen, and everything was clean and tidy. The owner was...

“The manager initially put me into a dorm with 2 swiss men who had been tramping for 6 weeks. I don't think either had washed their feet in the whole of that time.! Seriously bad reeking smells. Fungal infections that would sicken a dung beetle that had just feasted on politician droppings. Of his own accord, the manager offered me a different room, after taking me to the smelly one, and then realising just how bad it was. This was before I had a chance to ask for a chenge. In otherwords, very helpfull accomodating staff. I am sure he would have made a change on request, just to see a customer right.”
